I was pleasantly surprised to see the Acadia at the beginning of the video. Two of my uncles worked aboard her while it was used to collect charting data in the 50's and 60's. Great video!

There are some great scenes of Dories and their schooner motherships, sailing and fishing of the Grand Banks in the 1937 film 'Captains Courageous' staring Spencer Tracy.

I love your boat and your clear explanations of how you built her. I have a Shetland Yoal which I love sailing but is a bit heavy.

The dory rows along nicely however because I built it out of 11mm cedar ply its very light. This makes is very unstable in strong winds. I would build a dingy with a transom if I did it again.

Looks like quite a bit of set up time for a quick sale. I would guess when sailing alone - 1.5 hours is need for every sale (time before an after in trailer prep, launching, rigging, de-rigging sails, not including driving to the ramp).

The difference between Aussies like this and myself is that I wouldn't be able to launch a boat like this, or do anything else useful, until I had tracked down and eliminated the insane piece wildlife that manages to sound like a squeaky belt on a farm machine.

For scenes of original solid planked dories from before 1940 watch this 8 minute silent Canadian documentary. At the 4:45 minute mark onward are the various dory scenes, their use in various kinds of weather. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n9Rof9uqnt2siYE.html By the way, white pine was the normal traditional planking of these dories as it was on many Great Lakes and Atlantic boats, as it was on Hampton boats, shad boats, many whitehalls, and others. Decks of ships were commonly white pine laid edge grain and pine tar soaked once done. Many other boats evolved from the dory- likely the sharpie included.

Hi mate, can you give us a review of the boat now that you've had it for a while? Love to know how it handles coastal sailing, is it good expeditions up and down coast, camping etc -- did a great job!

You mean the Grand Banks of Newfoundland off the far east coast of Canada. There are no Grand Banks of Nova Scotia. The fishing Dory's were originally from newfoundland. My father and our descendants fished off the Grand Banks for centuries. The , portion of the North American continental shelf in the Atlantic Ocean, lying southeast of island, Canada. Noted as an international fishing ground, the extend for 350 miles (560 km) north to south and for 420 miles (675 km) east to west. The Georges Bank is off the coast of Nova Scotia. the Georges Bank is a large elevated area of the floor between Cape Cod, Massachusetts (United States), and Cape Sable Island, (Canada). separates the Gulf of Maine the Atlantic .

Very cool! Banks Dorys are great boats! Interesting that you put the bottom on after the sides, is this a function of the chine logs vs nailing the sides into the edge of the bottom on a traditional plank built boat? Thanks for sharing.

The ply is nailed into the frame so it doesn't matter which way you go. In fact I was taught to plane and sand a large radius on the bottom edge and transom until you see the frame and then glass the edge with a 75mm strip of 1 oz chop strand before glassing with woven rovings. This gives a big radius that can take a good knock. These dories are tippy under sail because they are so light so an extra person and lots of camping adds ballast and stability. Cheers John

No but I came close. The dory is very tippy when it’s sailed solo so u have to be on your game when it’s gusty. The greater the load the better. Two people n some camping gear is much better.

Nice job. Is that marine ply? Are the frames basic pine from bunnings?
@johnstewart42
@johnstewart42 4 жыл бұрын
The ply is Fijian Cedar and yes the pine is from Bunnings. I just hand selected from the stack lengths where the grain ran the full length of the piece and then used sections that didn't have any knots.
