the "out of place" doors at the entrance were actually installed last-minute due to ventilation issues. they are actually the reason the station didn't open sooner. hopefully the MTA comes up with a longer-term solution to this problem.

Interesting. That explains why they look so rushed. Hopefully a better solution is on the way, but for now I guess we're stuck with them.

Great video. I’ve been riding the RR my whole life, and as a daily commuter for nearly ten, and the execution of GCM has been nothing but a poop show, especially this past week with the new schedules. At the moment there’s no locomotive that can be used as a rescue engine because of fumes and the ongoing ventilation issues. Presumably a disabled MU would be rescued by another MU set. The M3s, M7s, and M9s aren’t compatible, hence the auxiliary couplers on the wall. If there’s a power failure? Beats me.

Having the LIRR serving both Penn Station & Grand Central Terminal is a win win. Next is Metro North Railroad turn going to Penn Station. By the way Penn Station is located in Midtown Manhattan not Downtown. Downtown / Lower Manhattan starts at 14 St.

Actually, most people don't access GCM through the lower level. I think most access through either the access by track 41, or the access at 47th Street. People going to Yankee games will access through the lower level. This is part of my walk routine in the afternoon. Excellent video!!! FYI, as I stated, Penn is not Downtown Manhattan.

Bizarre that they couldn't get retailers lined up ahead of the opening in one of the world's busiest train stations. That would be like ATL opening a new concourse with a bunch of empty space where shops should go.

I like the fake shops. Are the train units electric or have gas motors if burn gas how is exhaust gotten rid of?
@LonestarTrips

They're all electric. Presumably if the LIRR wanted to run their diesel routes out of Grand Central, they would have those locomotives switch to third rail power when in the tunnels and at the platforms.
@Mike-hf8kq

@@LonestarTrips NYFD would never allow diesel locomotives in the tunnels to GCM anymore than they allow them in the east river, north river tunnels or penn station. and the de/dm30acs dont fit in the 63rd street tunnel anyways.

From what I've heard/read, the doors were added to help with some of the ventilation issues around the station. They weren't a part of the initial design, and were added very late into the construction process, which is why they look so out of place.

No seating. How does a station have no seats? Boarding your train is an option when you know if it's heading to your destination. That's not an excuse for not having seats. Also those supposed manned ticket counters won't be manned (just like in other areas ) instead you'll be opted to use the machines or app. Also there's a great underestimate as to who will use this station.

@LonestarTrips
@LonestarTrips Жыл бұрын
@@odemata87 Yeah it's entirely understandable that commuters would be annoyed by this design choice. My only issue with the backlash is that because it's a terminus station, trains often just wait at each track until departure, so you can board and get seated well ahead of departure.
@metrorican
@metrorican Жыл бұрын
Like Moynihan Train Hall, Grand Central Madison seems to have been designed to make it less appealing to homeless folks by not having seats or benches outside of ticketed areas. Whether or not that's fair is up to each individual. Personally, I don't have a problem with seats limited to such an area as long as there's enough seats to go around.
@troybellamy4615
@troybellamy4615 5 ай бұрын
It's a commuter rail station! As there aren't any restaurants yet presumably most would eat in Grand Centrals food court or shop in many of its shops! Afterwards when close to departure they'd board the trains! The trains are typically available for boarding twenty minutes prior to departure which really is enough for most arriving passengers to grab a seat! Also most passengers would just go to Penn Station which is really only ten minutes away by train, since eastbound departures are staggered between the two!

Your commentary about the lack of signs - is a sign that something is very wrong with the design approach. The LIRR and Metro-North don't integrate rail service. In fact, as you start out the video you claim Grand Central has a new operator to its tracks. This is technically incorrect as the station was opened in 1913 and the LIRR tracks are in fact NOT attached at all. When the LIRR negotiated with Metro-North to bring service in via the 63rd Street tunnel, Metro North denied them access to the main terminal, which is why the LIRR was forced to construct a two-level 8-track stub-end terminal in a sub-basement 140 feet below the street and the 1913 Terminal. The new station is way overbuilt for handling only 50,000 riders per day. Some will say - oh well covid. Well, the new Elizabeth Line in London a two-track system connecting west suburbs with central London and then to two separate destinations in East and Southeast London - is moving 600,000 per day in its first year of operation (post covid). That is more daily riders than all three NY metro Rail Roads' (NJT LIRR Metro North) daily ridership combined! Why the difference? In London and every other city in the world, they build new stations that operate through town, nobody builds a new 8-track terminal only meant to serve (in this case) only Long Island. This failure can be fixed if Amtrak's Gateway avoids making the same mistake at Penn Station (they too are planning a new 8-track terminal by knocking down a block of Manhattan) and instead, rehab tracks 1-4 at Penn and connect it to Grand Central Madison allowing Long Islanders to reach New Jersey with a one-seat ride and New Jerseyites reach Queens, Long Island, the Bronx, Westchester, and Connecticut with a one-seat ride. Imagine taking an LIRR train and not worrying which station to get off at? Also, NJT did a study that said 36% of their rides need access to GCT. The need is there,to make a connection between Penn and GCM but the political will is not. The public needs to get more engaged.

what a gigantic waste of money.
@anthonyellis1962
@anthonyellis1962 Жыл бұрын
not really a waste a money. first it gives persons that live in Long Island and queens easy access to the midtown and the east side (easier to get to the lex ave subways) since a majority of ppl work in that area so they don't have to take the train one stop to Times Square and then shuttle to the east side (2.75 does add up after a while and they still haven't add OMNY yet to the LIRR which I still dont get it). The concourse layout is very simpler (I dont know why ppl are up in arms about it when it just a simple concourse). the signage is excellent (its actually better than Penn Station and GCT itself). and most importantly I provides a very important connection to metro north (so ppl can travel to Westchester County, The Bronx, or Connecticut. I think that may seem like alot of money but believe me it actually is well worth it. now we can be like other cities with mass transportation systems across the globe. now lets get the second avenue line finished as well as the interborough express line complete so ppl don't have to cut through Manhattan to get to queens or vice versa. If we going to be a global city we need to provide better transportation for it and it means spending money.
@winstonsmith2902
@winstonsmith2902 Жыл бұрын
@@anthonyellis1962 all this did was destroy one seat rides into NYC. this project made sense in 1952, not 2023. Imagine if those billions were spent on last mile transportation in Queens, Nassau and Suffolk. That would lead to a true global city.
@anthonyellis1962
@anthonyellis1962 Жыл бұрын
@@winstonsmith2902 well...wasted money i wouldn't say cuz of the metro north connection (which is very important if u have to go to Westchester County or The Bronx and u don't like the use the subway). and over the cost of time we will see the benefit from it. And let me explain how a one seat ride works here. before grand central if u wanted to get to the east side u had to get off at woodside or Jamaica and use the subway which is 2.75. or u go to Penn station and u had to either take a lengthy walk (remember thats 8th avenue) or take two subways (which again is 2.75). a grand central terminal is a one seat side (meaning I don't have to pay an extra fare. so your thinking about destroying the one seat ride is completely wrong. GCT will work itself out in the course of time. and we still have two other projects the IBX that connects Brooklyn to queens which is close to approval. and at least the 2nd phase of 125th street (I don't know if the 3rd or 4th phase will happen in ten years that we shall see). but lets not be bitter and call things waste of time when it actually does work (ppl need to start seeing it that way). im a engineer myself and an advocate.
