Grand Designs 2024 - Building Underground House
Bel and John are building a radical underground house on 25 spectacular acres at Whittlesea, in Victoria's Plenty Valley - so named for its fertile farmland and magnificent views. But the area has also acquired a more terrifying reputation. In 2009, 120 people died nearby at Kinglake in what's now known as the Black Saturday bushfires, and as a result Bel and John want a home that's fire proof! With John away at work for much of the build, it's up to Bel to project manage the difficult and complex build. But a number of unexpected challenges make the process harder than anticipated, and with their underground sanctuary looking more like an airport terminal than a stylish home, the pressure reaches breaking point!

I wonder if the soil on the high part of the roof is too well drained, and that's why the plant life is having a difficult time establishing? Maybe a heartier clay could be added to the soil to better hold moisture? Interesting idea, though. I'd love to see this type of home being built more often. Especially here in the US in Tornado Alley, roll down (metal or carbon fiber) shutters to protect the glass windows and garage doors. You'd be able to withstand an EF5 if the house were sunk deep enough.

add Gravel on the roof in between the Patches of Grass///..more Bush Fire Proection..

The plants they used on the roof are bushfire resistant , Australia has about 40 plants that do not burn under a flame. Emu Bush is the main one visible on that roof , google up "bushfire resistant australian plants" you will find the list.

Somewhat misleading upload - the thumbnail is of a different building and this is several years old , 2022, not 2024. Still, an interesting house.

Very thoughtful and interesting couple. They look like they’d make great friends. Nice to have a virtually unlimited budget for a home. This building method has to be safer in areas like this with such hazards. Here in the states it would be great in tornado alley. The benefit to the heating cooling has to be huge. The solar install is a little obtrusive but necessary. Congrats on having the wherewithal to pull it off.

Could have hired 2 Front loading dumpers and moved the concrete back and forth for about an extra 2k in dumper driver hire and drivers. Spending 25k to buy rocks was a bit odd.

The concrete beams seem overkill. I built on concrete roofs, 40 years ago. Back then, there was concrete (a few inches), over which, you had a 2 inch solid insulation, then a rubber membrane, then rock. Size of the rock, did alter, based on the region. but some rock was bigger then a softball. There were also walking mats, that could be put on.

So much PVC and concrete - won't go down well at the local organic caf. Not the building style of the future. Much better bushfire-resistant house designs to choose from. What were the architects thinking? Would have been good to get their viewpoint/justification.

At the beginning these two said they hoped this type of building would catch on , lol who has a million dollars to build a home the average person can barly afford a bedroom very unrealistic. Earthships is where they are at and can be built very cheaply or expensively...and are truly organic..these is unrealistic to build this way and not very oranic.

We are self funded retirees now selling out of the private rental market due to increasing government charges making providing this service to the community unsustainable. We helped many young couples save for their first homes over decades. The private rental market was never intended to provide social housing. There are more holiday houses than private rental properties vacant in Victoria. Be aware, we will give you what you ask, but be careful what you asks for. Wake up Next-Gen- Australia. Too late for us ….

Ummm, Australians really are copier’s of design? Nothing original whatsoever, Taste and class mixed with a culture is not something that you won’t stumble upon on a daily basis. There’s nothing that is remotely achievable by any average Australian? Why not do a program based on something that is actually an achievable goal/ home? I have been homeless for over a year, I would give anything to have 10 square meters of my own I couldn’t afford to pay for the deposit on the excavator yet alone any permission from the local shire…. Get real, show people some promise of what is realistically achievable?
