In this video we do the 3 hour trip down to see Grand Isle and the Gulf Of Mexico in southern Louisiana. You get a true "feel" for the Louisiana landscape and culture and watch it change from huge old oak trees and cypress to never ending marsh and then the gulf itself. Elevated homes and camps, shrimp and crabbing boats. A truly unique experience.

I have fished and crabbed off that pier at the state park many times. Been going to Grand Isle since the early 80's to now. Have caught a lot of both fish and crab there. Also fished and crabbed on the old bridge onto the island. Should have brought your pole and done some surf fishing, that is my favorite at dawn and dusk and night fishing on the old bridge which is now a fishing pier. Maybe next time when you come down you could try it out. I think you would be amazed at what you catch. Nice video.

Went down there a few years ago to go kayak fishing. There's a kayak launch by the DNR on the north side of the island. Caught a bunch of speckled trout, no redfish though. But what a great place, called in the state park right on the beach. Unfortunately Elmer's island was closed for road repairs when I was there I really wanted to surf fish there for bull redfish. Very different from Chicago where I live!

The beauty of LA must have hard for Melissa to let go, when she moved to MN. But MN does have four distinct seasons!:) The only problem I ever had, was the heavy salt on the road, each winter:( If I ever move back to MN, That would be the only regret. True love conquers all! Semper Fidelis

We go to New Orleans every year for about 11 days. Each time we go, we rent a Harley Davidson and take ourselves down country roads and go to the plantations, swamps, etc. by ourselves. WE LOVE the Mississippi River but, after 5 trips, we realized we have still never seen the Gulf of Mexico! So, that is a big item on our "to do" list for this year. We were planning on riding down to Grand Isle. According to what we see on Google Earth, it should only take about an hour and a half. It took you 3 hours. Where did you depart from??
@JoeandZachSurvival
@JoeandZachSurvival 6 жыл бұрын
We took our time going down there, you can do it in 2.5 hours from where we are at which is in Sorrento Louisiana. You will go south on 310 until you hook up on #1. Once you get down there it is very pretty with all the shrimp boats on the left side of #1. I still have no idea why the long bridge does a 90 degree turn to the left (you will know what I mean when you get there) but it is a pretty drive. You will have to stop and pay a toll in Leeville, I believe it costs 3.75 per motorcycle or car. Go all the way through in Grand Isle to the park on the right. Some pretty cool history to read there on the hurricanes that have devastated Grand Isle in the past. Nice piers to walk out over the Gulf. You can also see some of the oil rigs way out there in the gulf. Nothing new for people here but for me living in Minnesota it was a cool sight to see.

@@JoeandZachSurvival Joe, are you familiar with the woman that retired in Minnesota and bought a boat and sailed down the Mississippi River to Grand Isle in the 30's and lived aboard her boat called the "Wanderer"?
@meauxjeaux431
@meauxjeaux431 4 жыл бұрын
@@JoeandZachSurvival The bridge has that weird 90 degree turn because it will continue north to Golden Meadow via a future elevated highway. The ramp where you entered and exited the bridge in Leesville will just be an on and off access ramp to access Leesville when the highway is complete. Their was, and still is an identical 90 degree turn on the south side of the bridge that was used to get to Grand Isle via the old La. 1 highway before the elevated portion to Port Fourchon was built. That road is still in use, but is mostly used by people that crab and fish from either side of it.

Thanks Ryan. The gator was good but there was nothing special about it. The taste is close to catfish which I love. The Oyster was Sara and I's favorite and Melissa had a shrimp po-boy and loved it. Its all good and you can not get a po-boy in Minnesota so it was enjoyed. Thanks again. Joe

I would like to buy a lot down on Grand Isle and set it up for a travel trailer if thats allowed, then just take it out when a person leaves so you never have to worry about storms. If not that, a lot for a camp on one of the river systems that you can navigate out to lake Maurpas like the blind river or something. Who knows, but the thought has crossed my mind. Have a property close to Canada (the tent) and one by the Gulf.

Spent many nites tent camping and surf fishing on Elmers back when Mr. Elmer was still alive. ( before the State bought from Elmers children.) By the way rumor is Mr. Elmer drowned in his car in one of those water pools that run along the highway.Mr Elmer did not own the beach but he owned the land between the beach and the highway he charged $3 dollars per car for use of road.The fee was to enter, once in you could stay as long as you like and your provisions lasted for that one fee.
@JoeandZachSurvival
@JoeandZachSurvival 10 жыл бұрын
My Girlfriend Melissa and her dad would go there when she was a kid and drive in and pay the fee and camp there and catch fish and lots of crabs. You can no longer crab or shrimp there but being there with her I could see that it brought back memories. Elmers Island was closed for years and her Father died when she was 14 so it was nice to bring her back and we will be back there again. When you drive in now, you drive in and make a hard right curve after your in a ways. There is pilliars up where there use to be a building/camp/house, right on the Gulf. Melisa thinks it is the spot he lived and you would pay the fee. Is she correct? Thank you for the information and the comment. Joe

JoeandZachSurvival I do not remember a elevated camp at the beach end of the road. What I remember was a frame house at the highway, The sand road passed right in front of the porch there was two post on each side of the sand road with a flagged rope stretched across there was no need to get out of the car as usually one of the children would come out and collect the fee, drop the rope and return it. In case of an emergency in the night getting out was no problem cause the rope was just hung on a nail, really was just a honor system. My favorite spot on the beach was to turn right and go all the way to the rock jetty's and fish the channel or the beach. If it was crowded there I would fish some tanks that buried in the surf at about the first submerged sand bars somewhere half way between the road and the jetty's Sometimes wading out to stand on the tanks and fish, but the barnacles would cut you up pretty bad climbing them.
