This video was shot with the Canon EOS5D MkII latest version of bios, but in full auto mode with a 70-300mm IS f4-5.6 Canon zoom lens. Hand held shots, whilst I was being live interviewed for local Radio Devon. Rendered out to 1280x720 30p Windows Media Video (wmv) for KZfaq using Vegas 8 Pro

Ironically the mock Panjandrum worked better in this demo than it ever did in military testing. Which it leads me to believe if they had used more slow burning rockets or an actually motor that it just might have worked out well. Personally I always like the designe and if it could have been modified into an air dropped weapon imagine the sheer terror this could have caused if a few of these had been dropped on a german airbase. If one of these had rolled through a hanger or through a line of ME109s and then blown up with a ton of explosive force the results would have been devestating.

tbh that's probably because this one worked by gravity and momentum, those ones worked by rocketry. The rockets here are only for show

This is because its driving slowly over wet, compacted flat sand. To go "up" the beach towards any fortifications, it would of had to pass over bumpy, cratered, dry sand. If you've ever walked on the beach, you know the difference between the two... one is almost hard like concrete... the other... well... is like sand that your feet or any wheel would sink into. The bumps and craters, would surely change the direction of this thing often, put wobble into it (if it were going fast) and eventually make it careen in some undesired direction and fall on its side useless. I can't believe any idiot would ever think this would be an effective weapon, let alone even try to recreate or rebuild one. The only appeal to build one would be if you had a pre-existing cable spool lying around tempting you to do something stupid with it. All you would have to do though is roll one down a hill to see how impractical they would be.
It all makes since now that i looked up the original.

The common name is Great as you say - this was conceived by the author Neville Shute and I have all the film of the original prototypes being tested on the same beaches. I called it GRAND as this was a replica that really didn't bear much resemblance to the GREAT Panjandrum - just to avoid confusion. Glad you watched it though!

@ Tony Koorlander: From Wikipedia... The name "Great Panjandrum" was chosen by Shute as a reference to Samuel Foote's famous extempore nonsense paragraph (though Foote's term was actually "the grand Panjandrum"), and in particular to its closing line "till the gunpowder ran out at the heels of their boots".

Agreed, but the RED with all its plugin bits and pieces isn't designed for a handheld full auto shoot like this was. Also, I bought the EOS5D MkII for a tenth of the equivalent performance RED (including the lenses that I have) so it's a fantastic bit of gear. You learn to use it like a film camera. The tools are what you make them. The Canon light sensitivity betters RED. With separate Sony PCM 24 bit recorder, I get the best audio. If u like a 1920 x 1080 copy for Skyburst .. let me know.

AIUI, the device was actually called 'The Great Panjandrum' (not 'Grand' as in the nonsense poem), and was larger than this replica, being 10ft diameter with 1ft wide tracks/wheels. It was so hopeless it never worked properly, and surely must have been a spoof decoy.

@Pepito0001001001 This was an elaborate spoof devised by Churchill to make the Germans think the Allies were going to attack on the section of coastline where the massive concrete wall had been built. U-boat patrols would have seen the trials going on the public beach at Westward Ho!. There were over 15 filmed public 'trials' of various forms of the prototype.
