Speaking of snobbery, I wanted to share an experience: A while back, I was in LA then Orlando and toured a few high end malls with boutiques. I stopped in JLC, Rolex, Patek, Lange, and other boutiques. I felt uncomfortable and unwelcome by all staff except........ HUBLOT?! Seriously. The douchiest brand had the coolest staff. They welcomed me and were great! I'm not a Hublot fan, but I won't forget that experience.

I figure this has a lot to do also with the type of watch one might wear into those stores as well (Not like that should matter)
@hubertuswolfthaler
@hubertuswolfthaler Жыл бұрын
Sooo...did you buy anything? A store is a place of business, and the staff are called SALES associates for a reason; neither they nor their employer profit from entertaining windowshoppers. Either you're there to buy, or you're nobody. And no, wearing an expensive watch doesn't get you prefered treatment, unless a)you bought it at this particular store or b)it's so ridiculously expensive that you're clearly swimming in money. A grey market Explorer 2 won't get you anything.
@Ranteessa
@Ranteessa Жыл бұрын
@@hubertuswolfthaler Very short sighted point of view. A watch store is also a place of marketing and great opportunity to present your products and services to potential customers. No one should be expected to walk into a store and buy expensive luxury watch on the spot. Getting familiar with all the watch brands, available options, and finding your own taste takes time. In many cases it can take years from first window shopping to actually buying the watch. A smart business owners and sales associates doesn't focus on this months sales but rather in creating a network of customer relationships that pays out in a long run like dividends.
@hubertuswolfthaler
@hubertuswolfthaler Жыл бұрын
@@Ranteessa That's a whole lot of words to say "I would like to be treated like a paying customer without spending any money." Most stores make 80% of their money from 20% of their customers, and that one guy who MIGHT buy a watch YEARS from now definitely isn't among those 20%. It's called window shopping for a reason: You're supposed to stay outside and look at the display window, not come inside and waste people's time.

@@hubertuswolfthalerThe good thing is that bad customer service and snobbery attitude you describe can be spotted very quickly to avoid any business to be made with them. 👍

Fully agree on the last bit there. The absolute nicest AD experience I have ever had was at the Vacheron boutique in Dubai (can't remember if it was Dubai Mall or Mall of the Emirates). I was barely into the hobby and didn't know the difference between a spring bar and a juice bar. The thought of spending 3 figures on a watch would have required some very careful deliberation, never mind 5 or 6 figures. The chap there spent what must have been an hour with us, letting us handle and wear multi 6-figure watches. I daresay that experience was part of the reason I did get into the hobby. Perhaps they were just playing the long game as, a number of years later, I am now in the position, and of the mindset, to go in there and actually buy a watch.

I've had the same experience. Two of the nicest people i've met in watches were at the Vacheron boutiques in Vancouver, and the Vacheron department at Harrods in London. Always ready to talk to watch enthusiasts, encouraging to try things on, without a hint of snobbery or pressure. Vacheron is either training their staff, or hiring just the right people, they are absolutely doing it right.

Completely agree with you on the snobbery side, Adrian! I had once experienced more snobbery at a Longines boutique than at a JLC's. The sales staff at JLC was so welcoming and we ended up having a long conversation about watches (even though he knew I wasn't shopping and was just an enthusiast). But as you said... there are a**holes everywhere. And we can't let ourselves get held back in any way because of occasional negative interactions. Love your watch photography btw!

Always love your views on the whole watch community/ collecting thing as they echo my own. The snobbery element is something that mires the hobby. Speaking to the folks in the VC boutique in Edinburgh was so refreshing as they couldn’t have been more helpful and accommodating and this is to be applauded as I was a bit apprehensive about going in initially through a misconception of my own place in this hobby. If they were all like this, it would be fantastic!

First, I thank you for maintaining an approachable and non-pretentious atmosphere in your videos. I keep watching videos of other watch people that just make my skin crawl. Second, I fell in love with the Oris Divers 65 that I saw in one of your videos from a few years ago. I took the plunge and bought one from chrono24 and I could not be more thrilled. It is absolutely beautiful with the bronze bezel and the overall rustic feel. Thanks for doing what you do!

Sorry, 3rd and final comment on this video. Your bit around snobbery is spot on. I walked into a Lange boutique to just drool over the displays. The rep was as sweet as can be and even pulled out some pieces for me to look at, gave me a loupe and told me about the watches. She didn’t care that I couldn’t even dream about buying one (which I told her immediately when she asked if I was interested in anything upon entering the store). It was an incredible experience.

Adrian, this was a particularly good video IMO for several reasons. 1. Casually taking photos and walking around while answering questions just felt right, very personal. 2. Last night I was really questioning my strong opinions about watches and when you just now said enjoy what other people like that struck a much needed chord with me. I’ve always supported anything people owned and loved but saw pre-owning as a vehicle for me to sway them away from what “I” perceive as bad choices and that is just arrogant at best and crippling at worst. I’m gonna work on that. 3. The GS 9F. It feels so odd to say this but about a month ago I decided the only GS I wanted would need the 9F quartz movement. I don’t hate Quartz but have always relegated them into beater status watches, many of which I own. The idea of spending real money on a Quartz is an extremely bizarre thing for my brain to accept but that movement is insane and I really want one. The funny part is I don’t dig on the GS aesthetic the way many do but I’d deal with that in order to have the 9F inside. I do not think they are ugly, they are obviously quite the opposite, but their design language doesn’t speak to me. Side Note: I paused the video to jot down my thoughts and when I came back you admitted to buying the GS just for the movement. Too funny. Anyway, Thanks for the thought provoking video. I really enjoyed it.

+1 on the Aqua Terra. My 38.5mm (navy "teak pattern" dial) has really grown on me. I took it as my only watch on a month long trip to the Alps this summer, and I used it hiking up mountains during the day (on the super comfy rubber strap) and eating at amazing italian restaurants in the evenings (on the steel bracelet). It works marvelously in both scenarios. Plus I think there's really something to that case shape and proportions. I honestly didn't think I'd like it as much as I do, but that thing is a keeper.

I don't have a "luxury" watch - but over the past few years I've enjoyed learning about the industry through videos such as yours. Thank you for that. I've come to appreciate the craftsmanship of things that are well made - including watches. My daily watch is a Hamilton Field Khaki (Mechanical). I've replaced the strap to a canvas NATO and really love it. I'm saving up for something special - maybe an Explorer or a Sub - but then again, maybe something else. I enjoy the journey, the learning, and ultimately getting that one watch that I'll wear most everyday, looking down and saying, "Yeah, I saved up for this." Cheers!

I bought a black Quartz Grand Seiko (SBGX261G) earlier this year - and I love it! The finishing is exquisite and the high polished batons on the black dial flicker and dance in any light. I do have mechanicals, but for get up and go - it's the GS. The watch is also supremely comfortable but... I have one gripe which I do hope will be addressed....there have been times in the recent heat when the watch feels slightly firm on my wrist. Where is the brilliance of the push button IWC bracelet extension? Even at £2000 - it's an oversight.

Absolutely love your approach here, I wish you the best in growing the channel! I think the worst kind of snobbery is in the luxury AD-s, at least what I have experienced. I visited a store which deals with mainstream luxury brands. I just wanted to see a few of dream watches in person, to see them live and up close, maybe even feel them on the wrist. The retailer acted like she was doing a favour speaking to me and the two security goons just butchered me with their eyes. I was literally sweating and had to escape out from there feeling almost ashamed. Worst experience ever. My local Seiko Boutique on the other hand is a charming place. Well, lesson learned, I know my spot. :D

I have been getting into vintage watches I bought a old Accurist with a 21 jewel Pesoux in it, after fixing, on a week long test it as keeping time within COSC standards. Good point about "in-house" movements, especially when it comes from anyone in the Swatch group. Just doing some minor mods or slapping a custom rotor on an ETA doesn't make it something new. With a few minor exceptions and the use of alternate materials like silicon, mechanical movements haven't changed much for a hundred years. Everybody and their dog makes an ETA clone, why? There's a couple reasons, but mainly, because that's all that's needed do what they need and seemingly differentiate them from others. Thing is the technology that makes it easy for everyone to copy another movement also makes customized movements more achievable for everyone. At some point the basics of a mechanical movement will be at the fingertips of a computer operator, he spits it out to a CNC machine and that's it. It reminds me of the old saying "a rising tide raises all ships"

Adrian, as soon as you stated, your plan for your "SMP 300m," and why, I instantly said to myself, "well the solution to this, would be to replace it, w/ the "Aqua-Terra." Particularly, because I know how fond of the model you are, and it carries essentially the same movement. Not that it matters, but I personally think, that is a brilliant idea. I believe, that you will get more use out of AT. Yes, it's an "all-arounder," much like the "Explorer," but being a bit more flashy, I think it has a slightly different edge, that neither of your "Explorers" really have. Looking forward to the upcoming GS video as well. Here's wishing you all the best. Cheers....

Totally on board regarding the IWC chrono recommendations. Seriously considering the new XX, but have really always been smitten by the Pilot 41. A thinner Pilot 40 would fully hit the mark though.

Been collecting since I was 21 Adrian. So 17 years now. Have a decent collection as I got in early. I’ve certainly noticed that I don’t like wearing my Rolexes anymore when I’m in the office. There’s the safety part that wasn’t there previously but also it’s the hype. It’s ruined it. I’m a collector now who can’t wear my watches. Which is really sad.

I’ve been in it about the same sort of time but have always sold to make way for new ones so all my old Rolexes got sold for what’s now peanuts, I’m ok now working towards a 2 watch collection but living in Hackney/London I’m kinda glad I don’t have the Rolexes as not sure I’d be comfortable wearing them when out like I used to.

Sell the rolex's and buy some low hype watches, it will probably re-kindle your love for horology.

Great episode. I own 3 IWCs and love them so I look forward to you talking more about them. If possible I would love to hear your thoughts on the IWC Perpetual Calendar IW503605.

I too love IWC and after months of looking I went for the IW378003 Pilot’s Chronograph. Unfortunately when I got it on my wrist it didn’t do anything for me. In the end I went for a Zenith El Primero and I love it.

What were the ref # on the IWcC chrono’s you showed? I really like the one with the grey tones.

You are right, the content since you have change the name to the channel has become more personal and also unique in itself - at least if compared to the rest of the youtube channels focusing on watches. It's curious that you mentioned about the Montblanc AD cause I have had the same experience in recent times, maybe it's part of their training material to make them appear more upmarket. That Seamaster looks too good to be sold, keep it!

By the way…we still love the coffee cups. I use them all day every day. It would be nice if watch companies would cut thru the BS about MFG…. But, not likely. And the white Seamaster you own is gorgeous…if you get rid of it, you’ll be sad later in life. I have a 23 year old Seamaster Chronograph. It STILL is a weekly wear. I just love it. We always enjoy your take on watches Adrian…thanks.

Rolex Oyster bracelets are distinctive on their own. I've spotted Rolexes by seeing those alone, so people will notice your Explorers.

How do you feel about mods, especially Seiko or G-shock movements modded into other cases, and any thoughts on any particular mod suppliers as it seems to be a murky and uncertain area?

Had a iwc pilot chronograph. Only lasted 8 months. Just didn’t sit right. Perhaps some more polished edges.?
