_______________________________________________________________________
This Yi Bell or faith bell was copied from a 2-tone bell discovered in 1978 in the grave of the Chinese marquis Yi from the 5th century BC.
It is cast from a newly developed copper-magnesium alloy and possesses a singular physical characteristic resulting from its special shape and the effect of temperature on oscillation
damping.
At room temperature, the bell only sounds dull and wooden. However, if it is heated for several minutes with an alcohol burner, until it reaches about 100 degrees Centigrade, it produces a beautiful tone.
Tim has wanted one of these Yi Bells for a very long time. He finally managed to track down a company that sold them!

Apparently people get confused by the switch between C AND F... this following text is from the very first website if you type “optimal room temperature” : - “The optimum room temperature is between 18°C and 21°C. Minimum temperatures of 20°C or 21°C may be required for infants, the elderly and the sick. Temperatures lower than 18°C or higher than 24°C can be a health risk.”

The original Yi bells didn't actually need to be heated and many did have dual intonation that was calibrated very precisely by filing away at a notch. This type of novelty Yi bell is made from a much more recent alloy of copper and magnesium which is responsible for the effect observed, and these novelty Yi bells are produced specifically to illustrate the role temperature can play in oscillation dampening. Copper-magnesium alloy was certainly not available during the bronze age when genuine Yi bells would've been used ceremonially. A very interesting novelty!

“And casually, in the room an unearthly chorus began to swell. Upon hearing its chime, suddenly, you knew the time. It surely made sense, even though it was the most dreadful of the sublime. For the Fire King took his approach. Upon his neck sat a broach. The king pointed at you with a crooked smile, and a bruised up hand. “It’s your turn to face this land.” The bell tolled three more chimes, and the flames in your vision turned to sand... As before you, three strong Litches, were ready to stand. Friend or Foe, your fate was unknown, for all you could hear was the Bell, in the distance. You knew this was no ordinary spell. You reached for your wand, it did not exist. Not in this place, known as Exramatrist.”

3:26 onwards, Tim discovers that striking the bell in different places makes a different note. That's partly due to the shape, and partly due to the fact that the bottom of the bell is a lot hotter than the top. 3:39 - 3:40 "Still nothing at the top" YES! Also the top of the bell is not so hot, but he never measured it there.

This bell is really interesting. But the way You speak gives it such a fairy flavour. But this fairy flavour arrives to it's climax when You quote John Donne: what a superb accent! I would love You record the whole Meditation gifting us with the pleasure of listening that whole piece of great literature. And if I'm not asking too much, maybe also William Blake's "The Tyger". Thank you very much, and cheers from Italy.

What a great channel think I am in for a binge session this afternoon. Your channel remind me of the kind of thing the BBC used to show in the 50's, 60's and 70's, maybe something Robert Robinson would do, before the BBC tried to dumb everything down and become hip and aim everything at the mentality of a 4 year old, the kind of things I mean would always be playful and entertaining, but have an educational aspect, and would pay the audience the compliment of assuming they had at least a modicum of education and didn't need to have every little thing explained to them.

Don't think the expansion will be significant enough to change it's natural frequency appreciably. I would guess the elastic modulus would be making more of a contribution, as well as an a decrease of it's natural damping characteristics with temperature. I would really like to know the answer though
@suzesiviter6083
@suzesiviter6083 6 жыл бұрын
My first thought was the bell alloy must become more homoginous or crystalline in structure as the temperature increases. I cannot see how a slight difference in alloy expension could change the damping characteristics so significantly; I would expect the resonant frequency to change the most.
