my grandfather was part of this... so was my grandmother. My mother was born in Grandin in 1935. My grandfather told me that when they were building the railroad through there that men would come in on flat rail cars an would shoot pigeons from the tracks and would then pluck and clean them so them workers could later eat them. As a boy he got a job running cross ties up and down a running board for a penny a piece so the tracks could be built.

I'm a sawmill worker in southern Illinois. This film was very informative about the region.

My family has history in those mills.

My grandfather and a few of his brothers, brother in laws, and cousins worked there.
