It was my blessing and privilege to know the late soul and blues singer Denise LaSalle very well. She and Bill Withers were very good friends, and she assured me that his image was no act. "He was a deeply spiritual man," she said. "He was raised up in church, talked about how his grandma made him go to church and things like that, and he talked about religion-type stuff, spiritual stuff, all the time. His grandmother had to be something in his life . . . everything was his grandma. That’s what he talked about. And then, of course, he wrote that beautiful song, 'Grandma’s Hands.'
