Grandmaster Caz: Kool Moe Dee Upped Standard for Battle Rap

www.vladtv.com - n an exclusive interview with VladTV, Grandmaster Caz talks about the essence of battle rap and how he views it today.
Caz says in the early days of Hip Hop, every rapper was essentially a battle rapper. He also says the rhymes were focused on the lyrical skills versus the "man to man" complex the game has now. The pioneer says the first battle to get to that point was Kool Moe Dee and Bizzy B.
With Bizzy B being more of a "party rock" type of artist, Kool's lyrics were more personal, which changed the shift of battle rap.
Caz says the current trend of battle rappers threatening one another in battles overshadows the lyrical content fans are supposed to judge the rappers on.
Another battle that played out in that similar manner was an impromptu battle between Melle Mel and Mikey D.

Kool Moe Dee did set it off for battle rap and deserves a lot of props..A lot of rappers got better lyrically when they had to battle someone else and show their skills, back when having skills mattered lol.

Superman The Dj by the time Kool Moe Dee came out as a solo artist and had problems with LL he was already past his prime. In the late 70s early 80s Moe Dee was like a rap superhero. Him Mele Mel and Caz inspired the entire next generation of rappers that came out. Ex. Rakim, Kane, and most surely LL himself.

Yo I was there in '88 when Mel took Mikey D's belts and bopped off with Caz. He tricked Mikey D he was suppose to be handing him the '88 champ belt since he was the '87 champ. Mel outta no where says "and now the new champ has to battle the old champ" Mel took both them sh*ts and bopped . Mikey D was like "yo who won yall think I won or he won?" Yo aaybody was like "you won,Mikey D won" yo Mel was like "well I'll take my two belts now" yo Caz handed him the belts they bopped off into the sunset with a bunch of other Bronx cats.Tom Silverman said he would replace Mikey D's belt, sh*t was funny...

I wish Smack and them would get things right. Instead of consistently trying to book an industry or legend vs another battle rapper. Why not book an industry vs industry battle or legend vs legend battle for the main event? They would make so much money Caz VS Dee LL VS Dee 2 DMX VS Ja Rule 50 VS Ja Rule Jay VS Nas (wouldn't happen in a mil years) Jada Kiss VS Beanie Sigel (unresolved issues) Method Man VS Joe Budden (unresolved issues) Kim VS Nicki (Kim would thrash her) Cassidy VS Meek etc etc etc

The one that won the battle, was the one that was left standing... LL. When he dropped Mama Said Knock You Out, it was a wrap. LL has his own style, Moe Dee has his own style. LL wouldn’t sound right saying Moe Dee’s rhymes and vice versa. LL didn’t have to make whole songs to diss you, he did it with a line or two. Just like when he dissed EPMD and Slick Rick. It took Moe Dee way more bars to get his point across than it did LL. Prime example, Jay-Z ... “I’m about a dollar, what the fu** is 50 cent”. Bottom line, every rapper ain’t gotta fire a bunch of body shots to get you, some just go straight for the head out the chamber with one or two lines.
