GRANDPA WAS AN EMPEROR follows Yeshi Kassa, great-granddaughter of Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia, as she embarks on a personal quest to discover what happened to her closest relatives during the coup of 1974. While Yeshi and her older sister were thousands of miles away in a British boarding school, her great-grandfather was deposed by a revolution, setting off a harrowing chain of events that would put her parents and siblings in grave danger. For the very first time, the Royal Family examines the events that led to the collapse of a 3,000-year-old dynasty and reflects on how, against all odds, they were able to survive this turbulent time in Ethiopian history.

My friend - Ethiopia is still suffering from the poor decisions it made betraying the emperor. If there was no Emperor Haile Selassie there would be no Africa today. You fail to understand history. THe communist students are reaping what they sowed and Ethiopia still reaps tragedy since they turned their back on the Emperor. Life was not perfect nor is it black and white. In 1974 Ethiopia shifted from the history of humanity, Christianity, the Solomonic dynasty to a history of starvation , famine, and communist GREED and lunacy. Ethiopia has never been the same and will never be the same until the Crown is re-instated and justice returned.

Thank you for making this. As an Ethiopian-American whose parents lived during the time of Emperor Haile Selassie and afterwards, I always wondered what it was like. Our history is so deep and full of sorrow. But it needs to be told. We sadly are seeing history repeat itself over and over. And I pray for peace and love to come back for Ethiopia and for the world. ❤ Thank you telling your side of the story. I hope we can continue sharing what happened.

I am Jamaican the Rastafarian here love him. But Jamaicans normally look West African. These royal family look very Yemeni to me. If Yemen saying Queen of Saba is mother of Yemen. And Ethiopians saying she is Ethiopian Queen there is some link by royal line? Southern Yemeni look very much like these Royals from Ethiopia and Eritrea.

Oh yes the Emperor was the worst thing but the Italians were angles sent to rescue Eritrea ? These comments lack any understanding of geopolitical and international affairs at the time. The position Ethiopia was put in and surrounded by European powers. You think this was an easy position to be in ? You think you could have done better ? Eritrea and Ethiopian people are ONE yet divided by foreign powers set to rip apart the country and they are still doing just that. If there was no Emperor Haile Selassie there would be NO AFRICA. Not to be negative, but the worst thing that happened to Eritrea is Isias Afeworki. Under Haile Sellassie, thousands of Eritrean youths were education in Europe and America via scholarships he gave out, and for free in Addis Ababa University. Under him, Eritrea's economy was booming, Asmara was great, and there was a large middle and upper class Eritreans in Addis Ababa and Asmara.
