The redemption arc of Granit Xhaka has been extraordinary. Carrie Brown sat down with the Arsenal midfielder, to discuss the role of Mikel Arteta and how he convinced him to stay at the club following his 2019 public reaction to fans booing his own performance against Crystal Palace.

I agree, I think if Arsenal win the title, his story will be the most extraordinary story of an Arsenal player the last 20 years, and one of the most strange in the PL. He deserves a lot of credit for what he did. He’s like Arteta’s ruthlessness in the pitch sometime

The turnaround of Granit is insane, and not only that the fact Mikel walked into the club when Granit literally had two feet out the door with his bags packed, said to Xhaka “I want you, I need you, you’re in my future, my plans. Give me 6 months” to which Granit somehow agreed is amazing Granit has rebuilt his relationship with the fans and the mutual respect that now exists is insane. He is quality and so crucial to the way we currently play. It’s so pleasing to see him play again with a smile on his face. Watching him celebrate with the rest of the squad means so much. He is truly one of our leaders and whether it’s for the positives AND the negatives, Xhaka’s name will be remembered at Arsenal for years to come

Not everyone. He has to take responsibility for what he did. He’s never been a bad player and he’s always been committed but the abuse started when we were loosing and running out of time, and he was subbed and then took his time coming off, and that’s what he was booed for, then his reaction to the fans as he was coming off was to swear at them that’s when they turned. He apologised for that. After that he should’ve been accepted back into the team. Anyone that abused him after that, called him a bad player or questioned his commitment, they’re the ones that need to apologise. I’m not one of them. However I didn’t like what he done that day but I accepted his apology. I’ve always like him as a player. He got booked too many times, made too many silly fouls and got sent off too often but in my opinion it’s because he wasn’t getting help in that central midfield. Since Partey has come now, he now showing his true qualities.

We don't need to apologise for expressing our disgust at what he did. He disrespected the badge and the fans. Most of us have seen his inspirational turnaround and are grateful he stayed. We've put that all behind us. It's those fans that abused him and his family that need to apologise. That is totally unacceptable.

I agree. He has some bravery. Arsenal other big character is the club (Fabregas, Van Persie..), but this one have some character. He endured all sort of things, finishing 2 times 8th (so the lowest point of the club in 20 years), and he’s still there. Leading players, being ambitious. I agree, already a legend for that. He’s the brick from which Arteta rebuilt the club again. Really big character and resilient personality..

As soon as I saw him taking the free kick against Crystal palace a couple of seasons ago and scored,he immediately run to the touch line and wanted to hug and thank unai emery for believing in him. Just touches my heart. He's good, the scene when he took of the shirt and captain band and hush the crowd is because why he's to blame for the lost? Cause I saw him putting effort as soon as he wore the Jersey. Yes he slow on the ball,if he put in effort, and the rest don't, how is that balanced? Thankfully our squad now is young and hungry. He can work with them perfectly. Everyone putting the shift.hoping we can achieve another cup,A BIG ONE. ☺️

I think that all the trouble began when previous coach named Xhaka as a team captain which I think was a right decission based on Granit Xhakas toughness, caracter and leader personality. On the other hand fans thought that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang or Alexandre Lacazette should have been appointed as a team captain and from the first day Granit Xhaka had captain band -the fans were booeing him, yelling and screming at him and young man known for impulsive reaction lost it for the moment. But I think that fans should never ever go against their own team but in contrary stay and support the team even in the hard times. Granit Xhaka is having the season of his life, making wonderful passes to Jessus, Saka, Nketiah, Martinelli, Ødegaard, perfectly controlling the midfield and even scoring beautiful goals in contrary to Aubameyang and Lacazette who were traded to different teams and never showed anything. Granit Xhaka with Arsenal is now 8 points clear from Man. City on top of the number 1 ligue in the world. THANK YOU ARTETA.

I have a feeling this season might be his last which will be sad. Seems he’s on a mission to lead this club to something incredible and then have it as a good time to say goodbye. Hope I’m wrong

I do respect his football’s perpective as he changed himself from the most hated arsenal captain to the most beloved and valueable player.

Criticism of any player is par for the course. But to abuse one’s family, wish them unspeakable harm, threaten the player or family , is out of bounds. But we all know some people have no boundaries!

This guy is an Arsenal legend. Already. What a mentality monster so to speak. That passion birthed from his upbringing is immense
