I have just begun to separate a mass of grape hyacinth that are over 20 years old, they have become overcrowded from weed fabric and rock that was put around them. They stopped blooming but now that I dug them up there is new growth growing under the old growth. I'm going to try and save as many as I can.

I finally found the name of the plant. I digged up grape hyacinth last year from my mom's neighbor and brought it home and right now I only have one that survived. Will it grow some more?

Hi there! 👋👋 Yes, if it is happy where you plant it, it will definitely product more, but they more than likely won't flower until they are 2-3 years old. If you are looking to have more of an immediate impact with Grape Hyacinth, you should consider buying some that are already mature enough to flower or possibly asking your neighbor for a few more. Hope that helps and make sure to get out and be in your garden today. 👍😉😀

Great video! Could you do a follow up video later this year when it’s time to cut them back or explain dividing and transplanting? I have masses of them that went crazy this year. It’s getting overcrowded and some seem to have jumped the walkway and are popping up where they’ve never grown before. I’d like to move some to other places in the yard when it’s ideal to do so. Thanks!

Hi Lisa! 👋 Great questions! 👍 The best time to transplant them is after they are done flowering and their leaves are starting to die/whither, turning brown down to the ground. This means they are done growing for this year and are going dormant. When you see this happening, you can dig them up and thin out the areas that are so overcrowded to then move and plant them in their new homes around your garden. Then, after transplanting them, you can remove their whithered leaves; not before. Some gardeners will get them all cleaned up and cut back before they transplant them, but then can't find them or pick where to really thin them out, so only cut them back AFTER transplanting them. Hope that helps and we will be talking about your question on our LIVE KZfaq video today at 9am. Yay! Great question and super big thank you for watching! 😉👍

Hi could you link to the follow up vid? I see a lot of live chats from that time period. Half my front lawn is muscari and I'm not sure how best to go about cleaning them up after they've died back. Could they be mowed and then mulched over? What would be good to plant there the rest of the year? Or do I have to leave that area bare? The bulbs are very thick, there are millions of them lol. Don't want to cut all those by hand. Thanks!!

Bunnies and rabbits love the greens and the stems. How can I keep the bunnies from eating them. They don't eat the flowers, just the greens.
@SpokenGarden
@SpokenGarden 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Marjorie! 👋 That is a great question. Sorry to hear the rabbits are eating your grape hyacinth leaves. 😐😲 To keep them away using non-chemical products, you could use cat or dog hair. We know, it sounds a little weird, but the dander and hair can ward off rabbits and other critters. Also, dog or coyote urine can be used, and won't blow away in the wind. Hope those suggestions help. Thank you for watching and commenting!

I have had problems with rabbits eating my vegetables and I use Rabbit Scram which is a spice mix (smells like cardamom). Works well.

Thank you for the info! I just planted some muscari this spring and now they have set seed. Of course I had to collect the seeds and now I'm not sure what to do with them! I would like to learn how to propagate grape hyacynth from seed so that I can attempt to create a "river" of them like you see on the cover of bulb brochures. Any info would be appreciated! Thanks again!

Any advice on growing these inside??? My grandma had a whole bunch of these and I took two home, but I live in an apartment. I have them in my west facing window and have been watering them a lot. Any other advice??
@SpokenGarden
@SpokenGarden 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jillian! 👋 That's soooo great you have some of your grandmother's Grape Hyacinths! They are wonderful plants to have in the spring. 👍😉 If you want to keep them inside, no problem. Be sure to meet all their regular sun, water, soil, and nutrient needs (time release fertilizer or organic fertilizer; make sure to read any label when applying any product). After they are done flowering, you can let their leaves whither naturally or you can force them to go dormant (let us know if you want to do this and we can go over that, 👍). No matter what, they will eventually go dormant until next spring, so you can either dig them up from the soil to store them in a dry/cool/dark location OR leave them in their container (just let the soil completely dry out after they go dormant). To get them to flower next year, they will need an 10-12 weeks cold treatment (in a refridgerator or outdoors) of 40-45 degrees F. Then bring them out and water them to see them start growing. Here is a great article to know more by the Farmers Almanac: www.almanac.com/plant/growing-hyacinth-muscari We hope this helps and we will be talking about your question some more this morning on our LIVE at 9am PST, if you want to come join us. Have fun with your indoor Grape Hyacinth growing and thank you for commenting, watching, and being here! 😉👍👋

Nice. I'm looking at planting some pink Muscari with pink tulips. If I wanted to out some in the lawn, how long should I wait before the first spring mowing? I was thinking mid-May.
@SpokenGarden
@SpokenGarden 2 жыл бұрын
Hi PoptheBubble! 👋 Oh, that sounds like fun and will be amazing to see next spring! 👍 Yes, possibly mid-May could work for your first mowing, so your Muscari and Tulips can have enough time to grow flower and then wither to the ground before cutting. It could depend to on our weather that year, where it could be different between years and your bulbs will flower a little earlier or later, depending on the winter and spring months leading up to that point. Great idea and let us know how it goes this coming spring! Thanks for watching! 😉💪
