You sort of hinted at this already when you mentioned YA books, but I've found that a good entry into any new language is picture books aimed at young children just learning to read. They're fun, and pitched pretty much at your level of understanding the language. From there, you can move on to comics and children's books. Thanks for this video, I'll be checking out your online suggestions as well as your other videos.

I like to spend some time learning pronunciation before really delving into the grammar. One resource that I recommend for pronunciation for beginners that I have used is Mango Languages. It's free with a library card in the US, and it does offer Icelandic.I personally have not tried the Icelandic course, but I nearly completed the Thai course and they should be structured the same. I love the way it prioritizes pronunciation and phrases you would actually be using every day. It also uses some of the culture/places in the examples as well. I don't remember grammar being emphasized too much, but it's probably around the same level as Duolingo might be. It has this cool thing where you can record your voice and compare it to a native speaker to see where your pronunciation could use work. Hopefully this helps someone along with the amazing other resources shared in this video!

I have found the Pimsleur Method audiobooks to be very effective for pronunciation and conversational Icelandic as well. I spent a few hours a day for a couple months listening and speaking along with the audio files. When I spoke to Icelanders while on vacation in Reykjavík, they didn't believe at first that I was American. They thought I was from Akureyri. I assume the male and female voiceovers in the recordings were from North Iceland and have somewhat of an accent. The audio courses are expensive (whispers: but I was able to find them for free on the dark web. Shhhhhhh.) www.pimsleur.com/learn-icelandic/all-products

Yeah most Icelanders understand foreigners speaking Icelandic even though it's not grammatically incorrect. I saw an interview with a woman, and she made a lot of mistakes but everybody perfectly understood what she was saying and talking about.

If you're into reading, try Olly Richards "Short stories in Icelandic for beginners". The stories are aimed at beginner and intermediate learners and they're available in a boatload of languages. All the books come with a how-to and every chapter contains a list of vocablary and a quiz where you can find out how well you understood what you just read. There's also an audiobook version. Fair warning: The stories are the same in all the languages. Also, the plots are something else and, er... not particularly realistic.

I completed Unit 1-2 from Icelandic-on-line remotely (living in France)... ; I paid for the 2nd Unit (icelandic-on-line plus). Indeed, my reading understanding went up. So I also recommend this.

First course we used was Talk now on eurotalk.com. You can download the first level as a mobile app. You get points for each topic and each section you can get a certificate printed. My teenage girls loved it. But no grammar. I then tried a Kindle Icelandic book for my Kindle fire that helped with the grammar. But Aldis Schram, a personal tutor helped the best. She even came to our home and taught the four of us. The Icelandics don't really understand how to teach their language, imho. Once I pointed out that hotel in Icelandic ends in a -sch sound and she had to say the word out loud. I had to teach English in UK and it has rules like magic E and dipthongs that tutors here could utilise ie. -ey sounds like a, -au sounds like oy.

I learnt with a personal tutor called Aldis Shram. She wrote her own book that you can buy in Iceland and I think online. She starts easy and goes into the grammar in a logical way. I can read but I have CAPD which means I have to lip read, even English. Bit of a nightmare.

italki.com is great for connecting with one-on-one tutors online (video and chat). There are only a few Icelandic teachers though. Prices per hour vary quite a bit. It's pretty cheap just to try it out.

Well done both on your first 'Tip n Tricks'-it was very informative! I lived in Iceland for 6 years and learned some basic Icelandic at Mimir although Level 3 concentrated heavily on the grammar and was slightly less enjoyable. I practiced speaking at the local swimming pool where the hot tubs are great for social conversation.

Great video! Thank you for all the info. Just noting, I have been using Drops for a while. You're right, it's a vocab builder. It includes verbs in infinitive or commands, phrases and questions/ answers (e.g. greetings or things to say at store, restaurant). What a great list you provide, takk fyrir!

Also as an idea, based on your reading suggestion, that you offer some books in Icelandic in your shop as well as in English? Maybe something perhaps rather more straightforward for learners like the Andri Snær one?

Thank you both for a great video! The Memrise app also has some Icelandic lessons that I've enjoyed. There is also Transparent Languages, they have lots of sections, and a feature where it records you and grades your pronunciation! and it includes many sentences that have practical use - this enabled me one time to check out of my hotel fully in Icelandic and I nearly exploded with the joy of it! There is a fee for that but you can do a free trial and get through some of it to see if it suits you. You can do similar with Mango Languages I think. It's just so nice to find ones that do Icelandic as it's not a common option! Pimmsleur is available on Audible and they concentrate just on speaking, which is kinda practical I guess but my learning style is that I like to 'see' (even if it's just in my head) what I'm saying, so I found myself looking things up so I could write them down! I have in the past started IOL survival Icelandic but the videos eventually panicked me a bit - most of what I've done above is reading and anything spoken is at quite a pedestrian pace, and then there's these videos and they rattle the stuff off at such a speed my head spins! But I need to be braver and persevere and not be so easily disheartened. I would so love to come over for a year and do the practical degree! 😍🇮🇸

Perhaps post a link to the books you reference at around 13:45? I've been to Iceland three times, and I'm pretty sure the Icelandic spelling of the works you mention won't be spelled ANYTHING like what my American ear hears. Thanks. Great stuff. For help with conversational Icelandic and great pronunciation, try the Pimsleur Method Icelandic audio courses. www.pimsleur.com/learn-icelandic/all-products I listened to these for a couple hours a day for two months before my second trip to Iceland and I found myself having to convince a few local Icelanders that I was not from Akureyri but rather the United States. It also helped me outside Reykjavík where their English is sometimes not as strong. Thanks, Grapevine for giving us more great resources. I read and watch you all daily. High five!
