👉 Learn how to graph a cotangent function. To graph a cotangent function, we first determine the period (the distance/time for a complete oscillation), the phase shift (the horizontal shift from the parent function), the vertical shift (the vertical shift from the parent function) and the asymptotes (the two vertical lines which the graph does not touch). After we have obtained these features, we plot the points on the graph and graph accordingly using the graph of the parent function.

Is the end part = to pi because of the period or will I always use pi
@daniellamcintosh9946
@daniellamcintosh9946 5 жыл бұрын
Since you started at -Pi/2 wouldn’t that be an intercept and not an asymptote? Zero would be the asymptote and then Pi...then every Pi from then on? The graph now doesn’t have a phase shift, just a smaller period.

The reason he started at -pi/2 is because of the phase shift

I have been watching your trig playlist & I think I am a little confused, because I am watching so many videos at once. That being said, when looking to solve for the start and end I noticed for your Tangent video instead of setting the inside of parentheses to equal 0 for the start and equal pi for the end you had set the start to -pi/2 and the end pi/2 . So I am wondering why we do not do this for cotangent? ( not using -pi/2 and pi/2 for the start and end) I was thinking it has to due with solving for the parent graph when there is no phase shift, but I could be wrong.

it has to do with the parent graphs of cotangent and tangent. If you compare them using desmos you will see that the initial period of tangent is -pi/2 to pi/2 where cotangent is 0 to pi

Wow thank you! You are seriously the best professor ever. So to certify always remember the above statement while remembering sin, cosine and there inverses start and end are 0 to 2pi

so when its tan the aysatote doesn't go at the start but when its cot it dose?
@brianmclogan

the initial period you are talking about, yes, both of those functions continue forever so there really is not a start or end but we do use that terminology for the initial period.
