Many times you will be given the graph of a function, and will be asked to graph the derivative without having the function written algebraically. Here we give some tips on how to graph the derivative of a function. We also work a few examples where we graph the derivative of different functions.

I'm taking Math 121 (Calculus 1) this semester, and we just started this topic today. The way you explained this in your video was awesome! Finally get the concept. So we basically focus on what's happening before and after the Max/Min points, and then graph the derivative..

"what is diff btw first derivative and second derivative " this question lying inside my brain for 2.5 years now u have finally given answer for it , very thankful for u "SIR" and working on paper and journal too, everyone for and only marks but not for concept SIR thanks sir

this video was very helpful!! also i'm curious if you will make a video highlighting graphing f(x) when given f'(x)
@fireflylectures
@fireflylectures 9 жыл бұрын
Sylver Lyght - At some point I may make a video like that. It's interesting though... technically you can have many different f(x)'s that give the same f '(x), so the graphs of all the functions would be different. For example, if f '(x) = 2x -- then f(x) = x^2 , f(x) = x^2 - 5, and f(x) = x^2 + 9 all give the same derivative of 2x, but they all have different graphs. However, you can at least get the general shape of the original function, since all of the original functions only differ by a constant "+C".

Just a quick question, probably a simple one: When we want to find local (or global) minima/maxima, we use first or second derivative?
@fireflylectures
@fireflylectures 9 жыл бұрын
Kwong Chiew-Foong - Actually there are ways to compute local max's/min's using either the the first or second derivative. They're called the first derivative test, and second derivative test, respectively. Search my channel for a video called "First Derivative Test".

How do you know the precise values of the derivatives at certain values of x if the graph's x and y axes are numerically labelled? (Still no algebraic expression; just the graph)
@fireflylectures
@fireflylectures 9 жыл бұрын
TheKhal - If the axes are labeled with numerical values, the best you'd be able to do with only a graph is approximate the slope. To do this, put two dots fairly close to the desired x-value (one on each side). Then find the ordered pairs of the points. Then find the slope between those points. That should approximate f ' at that x-value.
@HaIsKuL
@HaIsKuL 9 жыл бұрын
Firefly Lectures I have a thought in mind.The numerical labels are very small intervals of integers which makes me worried that the slope would be way off. Hence, I'm thinking of making the two points really small values, a couple numbers after the decimal point, and add it then subtract it to the value of at x interval (x-δ,x+δ). I'd then use the formula for getting the equation of the tangent at x y - yi = m (x - xi) to get the value of y. Would this work? P.S. Thanks for the reply!
@fireflylectures
@fireflylectures 9 жыл бұрын
TheKhal Correct. The points will need to be very close to the x-value in question or your answer will be way off.

It's a bad habit to plot f and f' on the same coordinate plane. Just imagine that x is time and y=f(x) is the location, then f' is the velocity. The units for the y-axis don't match!
