Documenting my progress through almost 2 months of skating Inline with no prior experience. If you have any tips comment down below.
This sport has helped me feel a lot more like myself at a time when I sorta felt numb. With gyms closed in lockdown it gives myself something challenging to work on, look forward to, and enjoy.
Despite the countless falls, and being sore EVERYWHERE, I'm so happy I took the leap and ordered my blades. It's something I always wanted to try but was scared to because it looked hard, I thought I was too old, and its looked down on by the skateboarding community. But the more you get into it, the more you realise learning to do anything deserves respect.
From here I am going to gear my training in the gym towards becoming a better, stronger, faster skater which I'm sure will also decrease injuries.
I still suck but the main thing is I'm a mile ahead from where I started and that's all that counts!
A wise man once said:
"Sucking at something, is the first step towards being sorta good at something"
• Sucking at something
The Inline skates are Rollerblade Twister Edge 80mm in a size 9.5M

The best thing about this video is that you spend real good quality time with your kid. As a beginner skater myself, I would NEVER try all the stuff you are doing. Brute force is never a way I would want to learn anything. However, it's your body, so you get to smash it up all you like. ;-)

I do agree on the helmet and I would add wrist guards on these types of skates, these go proper fast and the floor is no fun for the palms outside of skateparks.

Honestly, most of the work is daring to do it! And you seem you’ve got that down. Jumping, powersliding, the fact you’re doing that so soon not afraid you’ll fall is amazing! I’ve been skating for a while and I still haven’t really figured out my powerslides, I only feel comfortable on super flat surfices and mild speed, I’m still scared. The biggest battle is 100% fear here.

You're definitely not afraid to fall, that's impressive ! I'm always slow cause I try to limit the falling part, even tho I have the protections on. But I'm pretty sure you progress faster when you just go, don't think twice and fall sometimes and try again like you do, that's really cool
@erichopham
@erichopham 2 жыл бұрын
Sometimes it helps to just get low and ride and sort of just fall over on purpose, it really helps you get a feel for what falling is like and you will soon stop fearing it! Of course it’s still scary to fall but you learn how to catch yourself instinctively without falling after a while

Funny enough I also found myself starting very recently with inline skating, and only have a few months on you regrading my blading career. 1. I'd look at channels like "Flow skate." I have learnt a lot of important knowledge about things from his channel that go beyond just learning slides like T slides and parallel slides. 2. When learning I seriously suggest at times you learn backwards, understanding your inside and outside edges and how you can better use them are going to bring your skating to a whole different level (by which i mean sometimes just start with a beginner tutorial and work your way up). 3. Last I seriously suggest you look into different skating arts like slalom and aggressive. There are so many skills you can use from both areas that will overall make your skills as a power skater much more effective. 4. Find people with more experience, a general tip but a very important one. I have a hockey friend who makes me look like a new born baby learning to walk, but he still teaches me and gives me goals to reach. So if you can find some people in your area who would like to skate with you or have skated previously. and don't give up especially during these next couple cold months, you have activities to practice like one foot front, backwards, slalom techniques. The whole shabang you'll love it.

Hi Eric, I really enjoyed your video. I have such admiration for adults who take up skating. It is much more of an intuitive experience when learning as a child. Also there is a lack of fear, or maybe a lack of experience as far as consequence goes. I have been skating since I was five and am now fourty eight. Skating has brought me so much joy over the years and has helped me form some of my best friendships. I hope you have continued your skate journey and that your family join you. Hopefully you have by now discovered your local skate community and have maybe joined in with the town tours that are organised by such groups. These are great fun and are a great way to find new spots and make new skate friends and connections. I wish you many happy years of skating!

Hey man, Pretty motivating video you've made! I'm 33 and bought my first pair of skates. Never used it before but played ice hockey for 10+ years. My issue is when I lace my skates as much as possible I feel pain outside of my feet and when I have them laced more loosely, they are comfortable but the wheels go right and left and it's hard to maneuver and do basic stuff because of the lack of balance. I guess I will have to use thicker sock and lace not too hard.

Man, I love your initiative and perseverance! I got my first Rollerblade in Munich back in 1998 and skated along the streets of Munich right away, with zero hours on, which in hindsight was a really bad idea. I definitely looked way more spastic than your sprint up the slope, which really, didn't look spastic at all. My Rollerblades are now 24 years old, and it's my birthday today, and I was thinking of getting a new pair as a gift for myself this weekend. I don't skate well, but hope to bump (not literally!) into you somewhere in Melbourne (which is where I am based at now) someday, if you're still skating these days. My cousin and wife are looking to start inline-skating too, and I hope we will work out great as a team...lol!

Man you are progressing so fast. I'm really experienced at least in terms of time (20years) and I still don't manage to do a powerstop and have to say I also have a heel break. Heal break mostly in terms of wheel drain especially because I'm living on a hill. I can plow break, t-break well and make a powerslide or fake one and spin break. But the wheel drain coming from t-stops made me use the heel break again. (im using 110mm wheels)
@erichopham
@erichopham 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I definitely didn’t realise how much the wheels cost before I ever got into rollerblading! But I have no choice because I only got in to it for the slides I saw on KZfaq! Maybe you should set some time aside to drill some slides ;)

@@erichopham I always do, but there are so many different things to learn and to improve and only limited time to practise 😅 I also want to learn to drive down some stairs. Preferred backwards because in driving forwards my heel break would be in my way. And to do so I need to improve my backwards driving. I can easily swap inbetween driving backwards and forwards driving can also drive fast and long backwards but still lack of the agility and flawless balance like driving forwards .... So there is more homework to do before moving to the next stop and so on and on.... Few days ago I had finally a breakthrough in learning how to move your body to form a powerstops. Now I only need to learn how to control it. And I would say at least having one of these stops and slides is already a good basis

Good job. Keep it up and maybe if you get super comfortable you can try aggressive skating. Grinds and airs are so fun.

I started about a week agio, and it's funny to see how we've come up with the same thing and little exercises. I am good on outdoor quads and figured I'd have an edge but blades are a different animal.

We just ordered our skates, Rollerblade Macroblade 80 for me and my wife. You really inspired me and can't wait to get on the skates. I did skate alot when I was younger so just getting back and will only do fitness, not the tricks I did as a kid.

2 things that have certainly helped you: Finding time on a regular basis Level space to practice in Both challenges holding me back from learning currently and as I've learned, a sidewalk is not a good learning space at all. Loved the journey. On a similar one as my 4 year old learns to bike by my side 😅
