When Jerry was absolutely brilliant, like this, no one could match him.

If you watch this and don't think at the very least Jerry had some magical power, then you are not looking hard enough. You might notice how much he doesn't even look at the neck of his guitar, but he's instead looking at something else entirely.

TheTestingGrounds That's called talent and experience, not magic. LOL

+TheTestingGrounds There are moments when he appears truly inspired. What can you call it if not "magic?" Genius? Transcendent? I have "rediscovered" the Grateful Dead (saw them live in 1977 and 1987) so I am listening to everything again, and watching all these live concerts. Sunshine Daydream is a really good one. And I'll tell ya, there are some performances in there that really seem to be magical .....

Great to see an enthusiastic, energetic 36 year old mexican american leading a tremendous band who had the balls to experiment and who had recently hit their stride and the only ones who knew it were them and their fans. I can remember going to the bathroom at halftime of the shows in this era and everyone would be downright giddy about what they were witnessing; there was a sense of feeling privideged to be part of the event and resulted in a great comraderie among the fans as well as the band.

I thought Bertha performed at Veneta in 72 was my favorite. But seeing this...this is my favorite. To see Jerry smiling so big during his solo brought tears to me it was so happy. They all looked they were having a blast. And they knew it was special

Rebecca, i almost fell off my couch reading your entry, because i was also at that concert. in fact, my friend and i sneaked into Cameron early, hid under the stands and listened to the Dead's sound check. we knew it would be a great show because they jammed on Funicali for quite a while. thanks...

Robert Hunter's lyrics (near every Jerry tune had lyrics by Hunter and music by Garcia) are always amorphous enough allow the listener to interpret them in their own way under an umbrella of archetypical and iconic characters and situations. That is the sublime beauty and intangible lure of Garcia and Hunter. OF course add a beautiful melody which Garcia explores in new and intriguing ways during each musical solo....

Bertha, to me, has always been the Big Bertha motif. Not necessarily a big woman, she could be a little tiny thing, or a little bit of whatever your weakness is. Bertha is what's stronger than us. You get away from her, put your life back together, get a good thing going and...here comes Bertha. "Throw me into the jailhouse, Lawd, until the sun goes down..." Love me some Hunter. Best lyricist ever.
