Grateful Dead

5 жыл бұрын

"By 1990, China/Rider had been in the Dead's repertoire for more than 20 years, since they were first joined in the Fall of 1969. A consistently played combination until 1995 (aside from a brief hiatus 1975-1978, with one performance during that span on 12/29/77), this was most commonly a second set opener in the later years, usually going into a Weir song. This sequence is from Brent's final tour with the Grateful Dead." - David Lemieux
Directed by Len Dell’Amico and co-produced by Len Dell’Amico and Grateful Dead Productions for Grateful Dead Productions.

I'm kind of tripping over the word "consistently", which is only true if you don't count the late 70's, when China Cat/Rider was very rare. In fact, between 10-20-74 and 2-3-79, the combination was played exactly one time.

There are bad shows, good shows, and great shows. They span across all the years the Grateful Dead played. I only saw shows in late 80s and 90's, there were great shows in the 90s but it was hit or miss, IMO. I think early on after Brent died it took a while to integrate Vince and even when he was integrated it was a different sound than the Brent years.

@Mark Green It's important to know the difference between a great show and a shitty show. There were both and in betweens too. Anybody that thinks that all shows were great, either isn't discriminating enough or didn't go to enough shows or listen to enough live GD to know the difference.

I was getting ready to start 7th grade when this show happened. It was 2 years after I graduated high school before I knew who the grateful dead was, and I have been hooked since that day. The GD has done so much for music even to this day. It is a self sufficient community that thrives. Even with dead & CO. And all the other Jam band groups, that spirit is progressive and will always thrive. Thank you GD.

Mydland's last show with the Grateful Dead was on July 23, 1990 at the World Music Theater, in Tinley Park, Illinois. The last song he sang that day was "The Weight." His portion concluded with the words, "I gotta go, but my friend can stick around."

This was my first Grateful Dead show! I stopped by a friend's house early that day (we live in Huntsville, AL) and he was looking for someone with a car that could make it to Louisville. I didn't even like the band at the time, but he was providing the gas and the grass so off we went! We made it to the lot just as Bruce Hornsby's opening act was finishing, got our tickets and scored some acid. I ate a couple of tabs outside, but wasn't feeling it so I ate two more that I bought inside. Then the first two kicked in and I was out of my mind! The show was awesome and I will forever be a fan of this amazing musical community. There's also a little over an hour of this show included as bonus material on the DVD "Grateful Dead View From the Vault Volume 1".

I always, always get a kick out of Bob's short shorts. Man. The funny thing is that it's 2019 and short shorts for dudes are back "in." I actually live right across from a house of undergrads and the guys wear shorts shorter than I'd wear to the gym, much less to class or around town. Not a fan of clam digger-length shorts, but upper man thigh is something nobody needs to see. Funny that it has even caught on in NCAA basketball. I thought my eyes were deceiving me last March Madness...then there was a newspaper article all about players finding more freedom in them. Oh really? You mean wearing "shorts" to your ankles is a hassle? Go figure. Oh well, style is personal.

Great summer tour, I met Jack Herer in the parking lot of RFK stadium, pretty cool invite onto bus to partake in the joys of his kindness... That was an insane show with band waiting for storm to get to its peak and with a huge bolt of lightening Jerry came out into the lights and struck a sick cord awakening the entire world with light, sound, and crazy energy & into an amazing " Get in the groove and let the good times roll"

A very hot show! Summer tour was cooking and it was so hot here, the bathrooms at the back of the field looked like old horse stalls with troughs set up on the walls with water flowing through them, it was hot and steamy LOL. luckily they had water sprayers set up right next to the stalls and you can wash and cool your self off!

Lesh in his white legged glory is just laying down ridiculously intelligent and obscure bass runs but he is too low in the mix for me to hear his genius.

In the early 1970’s went to so many Dead shows, RFK stadium, Roosevelt Stadium, Watkins Glen.... walked thru thousands of people to get a gallon jug of water for my friend Rick W. and I.... by the time I got back to the front of the stage with the water, there was hardly a tablespoon left from so many folks asking ‘ hey man, can I have a hit’. WTF, it was the Grateful Dead.... would do it again in a heartbeat

So many of us deadheads seem so obsessed with finding when the band was at their ‘best’ (which mostly seems to land around 67’ until 79’). The band went through so many changes not only musically but in their lineup and they integrated with the times, my point is that one person ‘worst dead period’ may be another person’s favourite, it’s all about you’re groove and the pace of music you like. You want upbeat powerhouse Jerry? Go listen to live/dead 1969. Want a more melodic, slow Jerry? Listen to some 89’ shows
