"Although played more than 50 times in 1972-1973 combined, Dark Star became a rarity in 1974, played only six times before being shelved until 12/31/78. At the Farewell Shows in October 1974, the Dead played this magnificent, introspective, powerful rendition of their ultimate improvisational vehicle. We were thrilled to locate the 16mm film negative when we were producing the Grateful Dead Movie DVD." - David Lemieux

My absolute favorite version is, oddly enough, from this same series of shows, but the super long version from the night before, 10/17/74, on The Grateful Dead Movie Soundtrack. The one that's preceded by a long jam, and very slowly morphs into Dark Star, and the audience goes wild when they recognize it, and then starts clapping in rhythm very audibly. I'm trying to dig up the CDs, but is that version available anywhere digitally right now?

Each performance they do of their songs is a work of art. When you see a really nice, well done painting, you don't think about how long it took the artist to paint it. Its the final product that matters.

This might be the greatest Dead video I've ever seen. The video quality, audio quality, the KILLER performance, the fact that 74 is arguably the greatest year for the band...if I ever have somebody say "I just don't understand the Dead" I will show them this one, on the big screen tv, with the lights out. (Unless they seem like the kind of person who couldn't handle Dark Star) But holy shit, this Dark Star is just phenomenal

This has been one of my favorite versions of "Dark Star" since I first heard it on tape back in 1983. Many years later, I was ecstatic when I purchased the Grateful Dead Movie on DVD-- and they had included this as a bonus feature. I will confess that I have always hoped that someone would go back and create a solid chunk of video that included more of the great jam before they began singing and then include the equally amazing "Morning Dew" that follows. Here's hoping that might someday happen ...

@@garrettwelch9489 He did on occasion (13-8-1975 being a certain example), but mostly he played acoustic piano in '74. Many, if not all, of those versons of PITB from the second half of '74 that feature aggressive Fender Rhodes playing is Lagin playing. He was, after all, on tour with the GD from June 23 through the final Winterland shows. This is not mere speculation; I've hung out with Lagin a number of times and talked to him extensively about this period.

@@Incornsyucopia Oh wow that's interesting, I didn't know that. Are you sure it was always him though? If you look at the video of the 10/18/74 Weather Report on youtube it appears that Keith is playing the Fender Rhodes. If all of those cases were indeed Ned he's a hell of a player, some of the rhodes playing on the Alexandra Palace shows from Dicks Picks 7 (particularly the Playin and Dark Star) is very far out. I also don't tend to hear Keith's piano when the Rhodes is going so I always assumed it was Keith.

@@Incornsyucopia You wouldn't hear Ned on the soundboard sources, right? Because they didn't give him a distinct channel in the Wall. But this Winterland run (excepting the opening Wed. night), and Alexandria were recorded by Bear's audience mics, and thus captured the output, not the input. At least that's what I've pieced together from some different readings.

Whenever I see 74 Jerry I'm surprised how young and slim he still looks. Hes still so young looking where as just a few years later he looked much older. I've heard Phil say he thought the best Dead was pre 74 hiatus, and how when they came back something was different, jerry had lost some of his fire and it wasn't the same.

Phil Never said Jerry lost some Of his fire. He never said that. This was a complicated time. He didn’t take interviews. He didn’t want to mould it. He was aware what the Grateful Dead really is and what he did was very smart and very deeply reverent

Check back in when you turn 35. Some fire gone smh. He was just stepping out to consider if he wanted the responsibility of moulding it to continue. It’s / big deal. If someone informed you that you were playing with something that is All and in continuing to do so you’d have to take some Leadership and shape it.. wouldn’t you think about it? That was incredibly wise to step back and really find out what’s the right thing to do. Some Fire gone out. Give me a break man. There was so much to come. Wise people, especially those with tremendous responsibility really take power very seriously and are careful with it. This isn’t a human topic. This is God topic

It’s not fire gone out. It’s recognizing what fire is. And think about it- he maybe realized he’d give his life in this incredible venture. Maybe he stepped back to figure out if that was the thing to do or not. It’s not like he ever did anything half assed. And to that point, nobody you’ll ever know I even hear of will pack as much life in such a short space of time as he did. He had a million things going on at all times and honestly lived a life that 100 people Combined couldn’t equal in terms of output. So think about it differently maybe. It was always supposed to be fun. Maybe it came back with a little more Serious edge is all. And we should be grateful he came Back to Okay. But if he had not and had gone to Do art or teach scuba diving or produce movies or whatever else he did-- the Grateful Dead would have been more than enough to Enlighten humanity if it ended at Winterland. Peace and love to you. I’m not coming down on you. Just think about it more

You do realize that he was a phenomenal visual Artist right? He could do that. He was an astonishing artist. He was also a producer of film. Highly educated and super gifted and talented mentally and really concerned about social and environmental causes giving lots of time and money to that, also a scuba instructor. He could have done a hundred things with his life and been just as good at them as playing guitar in the Dead. He could have just had his own band. A million things. I don’t know what he was thinking. I was busy being born but I’m sure grateful that he did all Of what he did and am glad this band came back together for all our benefit. Okay- am done

This is a nice, relaxed version. One of the great things about DS is that it can be interpreted as being in more than one related key or mode for much of it. Guess Mickey wasn't around for these shows (?)

I last saw the Dead during Memorial Day weekend in Portland 1995. They didn't play Dark Star but the Dark Star community was there in full force. Multiple, generations spread out,,picnis, many different scenes all tied together by a band of misfits that grew into a transformative enterprise. Graham was right about the Dead.

Something about the slow-down in playing starting at around the 7:40 mark, Garcia silhouetted playing that solo at around 8:22…I know the band was already huge and was to have so many great, great moments later on, particularly in the late ‘70’s and again in the late 80’s…but this - almost eerily and sadly - seems like a nod to the psychedelic era… the end of the beginning.

As someone raised on 1969 to 1972 Dead, I remember being profoundly disappointed by how comparatively milquetoast the band was in The Grateful Dead Movie (which I attributed primarily to Pig being gone) when I first saw it in the 80s. But THIS is freaking sublime. Live/Dead's Darkstar gets way spookier, but this is jamming as tasty as I've ever heard from ANYONE.
