The Dead can be an acquired taste. There music is so layered. Every member was a master musician.

I think Phil was probably the best musician out of all of them by best I mean well rounded in different instruments

Great video. The friend of the Devil song isn’t advocating being a friend of the devil, it’s a cautionary tale about how a series of bad decisions can put you in that situation

Acoustic fire! RIP Robert Hunter.🙏 Psychedelic trailblazers taking a cue from The Band and getting back to their folky roots and proving all the critics wrong. From this album on their lyrics evoked a lot of outlaw cowboy imagery, on the run in the Old West, shootouts, betrayals, etc and tapped into that old Americana mythos. The lyrics are usually not meant to be autobiographical, but more often assume the voice of an imagined or historical character, lots of allegory and symbolism, and open to many different interpretations. But just because this song mentions the devil doesn’t mean there’s any kind of Satanism involved.😂

The first song I learned on guitar. I have heard an alternative final verse... it went, "you can borrow from the devil or you can borrow from a friend... the devil's got a 20 dollar bill, your friend's only got 10..."

A favorite band of The Hell's Angles. The mandolin was also killer. That band had what had to be the most devoted fans ever (AKA Dead Heads) for their live performances.

It's an old timey ballad. They were sometimes from an outlaw's perspective. You are a rock warrior for even trying the real Grateful Dead. They are in a class by themselves. Americana.

You should listen to whiskey in the jar from the So Many Roads album. There in rehearsal and Jerry starts with a song they hadn’t done in years. Then the rest of the band starts kicking in and it’s unbelievable

Drugs are the devil. The devil didn't loan him $20, he was fronted a bag. The $20 doesn't vanish in the air so much as it gets turned to smoke and dissipates.

LOVE the dead....on the surface their songs sound so simple...but if you break them down instrument by instrument, there is a HELL of a lot going on. The lyricist...robert hunter...passed a few weeks ago. RIP mr hunter.

What did the Dead Head say when he ran out of drugs? "Man, this music sucks!" JK :)

No that's what Phish fans say when they run out of drugs. What do Deadheads say? Trick question, Deadheads don't run out of drugs (~);-}
