I just want to thank you for what you do. Every time I get hung up on some guitar part, I type it in and there you are. Gets me back on track. Another thing is you teach the correct way to play the notes and chords. Much love for you and your Chanel.

Davvy, you should check out Grateful Shred’s Rueben and Cherise they did with Sam and Clay years back. It’s a great studio version of the song.

I think the disconnect in vocal quality stems from him reading the lyrics as he is singing. I noticed it in recent Phish shows as well. Nailing the lyrics or the vocals are mutually exclusive. You can't have both if you're reading them. Edit: Also, if you haven't already, check out Yonder (Jeff Austin era) covering this song. Segue right into Crazy Train. Great stuff.

also to be nitpicky, I'd say Tom is bringing in the envelope filter too early. on the recording it has such great impact when Jerry finally brings it in during the outro jam. Tom going for it right off the bat kind of defeats any chance for a moment like that.

I 100% agree about dynamics. He should not have sang the song. My philosophy is don't do the song or do it as an instrumental if you can't sing it.

JRAD doesn't quite do it for me. As far as handling Garcia's vocal, it has got to sound sweet in order to sound like Jerry.

Heard on the bisco podcast that Joe Russo was more of a jazz guy at the start and used to hate jambandy stuff and would constantly rip on tDB.. and now they laugh that he's in a dead cover band

I don't know man. A good jam is June 10, 1973, Eyes of the World from GD itself. I know it's unfair to compare it but isn't that the standard where we all want to come in 2022? What JRAD is doing is not as mature at all if you compare it with GD. I think what is missing is the social connectedness between the individual musicians and the audience. GD was insanely tight. In their best moments you couldn't tell the difference between the individual members of the band because they all went into the music as a whole. This is the aim for every jam band. And I don't see any band doing that nowadays. I think it has to do with the cultural change and aggressive capitalism that ruins people from within but also the lack of LSD is part of the problem why we don't get the best possible jam music. GD was always talented as hell but what really brought the special turn was that substance because it made the ego of all band members fluid. In that way they could jam like no other band on the planet. And also: They did not care if someone was listening because they enjoyed their music anyways. The joy and the music was the center of the attention. Today nobody is taking such a risk for art. GD didn't just play. They lived the song. "Truckin'" is a perfect example for this. You can call me an insane hippy. But this is for me an explanation why we haven't seen anything as good as GD for almost 30 years. And yes, of course the a personality like Jerry is missing who was one in a billion.

The point of these isn’t to find something better. It’s kind of a compare and contrast. I just enjoy seeing the differences and the ways others interpret the music. Some good, some bad. Either way, it’s still the music that we all love, just through a different lens. And come on now, the dead definitely had their bad nights and Jerry himself even said he hated every recording of every show they ever played. So, you never really can tell. Haha

@@TobyDavvy Thank you for your response. Yeah and Jerry himself was surprised how far everything went: The music. The band. His life. The whole GD saga seems like a lucky coincidence. Nobody planned anything. It was all in the moment. I don't know how we can achieve this again. There must be a (lysergic) way. I truly want to believe that we get someday to this epic music again. And you are doing a great job in that effort! Keep on rockin'!

Love these Davvy. Please keep doing them. On GD&CO..imo John Mayer was the most vanilla, boring choice to be on that stage. Yes he knows every lick and plays them well but I yawn all the way through it. He’s like only being able to do it in the missionary position forever. It’s good but lacks a little luster. Again, I’m sure I’m in the minority but that’s my feeling on it. Thanks for all the free lessons. I plan on buy the lesson pack 😁

@@kevinborchers3522 Tom Hamilton is a1 imho. Many of the Garcia students are really quite good. JM is very talented. Bob is 75 or so and he's no longer 35 so the band doesnt always cook but DC is fun and all the criticism is tiring.
