My first Grateful Dead cassette was Europe 72, my mom died and I was just lost. I was 13 years old and one of her friends said listen to this. He just pitched it to me. Then and there 1992 Alabama, i became a Deadhead

Sorry for your loss. Sucks to be 13 and go through trauma like that. Glad you found the Grateful Dead but still it was a terrible thing.

The tone Jerry got out of Alligator was so amazing. His sound during this era and when he was playing the Travis Bean in the 77 period were the best.

Interesting take. Europe 72 to Cornell 77 is what hits me the hardest of the whole catalog.

Man I love Europe 72’ so much, It’s just sad seeing pig on stage knowing how little time he had left with the band and his life. Alligator and Love Light were always highlights for me in the primal dead sets of 67-69, pigs little quips and raps on stage just bring a new energy and life to the band. The band didn’t lose much technically or musically when he departed but a part of their soul was surely permanently fractured. As Jerry himself said at pigpens funeral “That’s not pig lying there. That’s the grateful dead!”

John Riley agreed......! He don't play no normal chords. I rememeber back in '77, I was exhiled for stating Bobby was a lead rhythm guitarist....to my defense, I was also coming down from a 4-way hit of window pane (~);-} ¡!

"He's Gone" Rat in a drain ditch, caught on a limb You know better but I know him Like I told you, what I said Steal your face right off your head Now, he's gone, now he's gone, Lord, he's gone He's gone, like a steam locomotive Rolling down the track, he's gone, he's gone And nothing's going to bring him back, he's gone Nine mile skid on a ten mile ride Hot as a pistol but cool inside Cat on a tin roof, dogs in a pile Nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile Now, he's gone, now he's gone, Lord, he's gone He's gone, like a steam locomotive Rolling down the track, he's gone, he's gone And nothing's going to bring him back, he's gone Going where the wind don't blow so strange Maybe off on some high cold mountain chain Lost one round but the price wasn't anything A knife in the back and more of the same Same old, rat in a drain ditch, caught on a limb You know better but I know him Like I told you, what I said Steal your face right off your head Like a steam locomotive Rolling down the track, he's gone, he's gone And nothing's going to bring him back, he's gone Ooh, nothing's going to bring him back Ooh, nothing's going to bring him back
