Here Comes Sunshine by the Grateful Dead recorded on December 19, 1973 at Curtis Hixon Hall.
I don't know who took the video (I didn't) but it's a sunrise over the Nass River in BC, Canada. (the original was a time lapse thing that was 50 seconds long. I strung it out to 14 minutes. So, it's uhh... real slooow.... Nothing really happens until about 4 minutes through... Oops! It was an experiment! Never done this before)

I was fortunate to have taken several guitar lessons from Jerry Garcia awaaaaaay back when at Dana Morgan Studios in Palo Alto, California. He taught me some great riffs...and introduced me to such greats as Elizabeth Cotton and Mississippi John Hurt. He and his group, the Dead...went up to San Francisco to play at the Fillmore...and I never saw him again. They became famous!!!!!

Darren Klein, very excellent call my friend. I have always thought the EXACT same thoughts as you about this song - one of my all-time favorite jams by the boys. They really were hitting on all cylinders for this one. I constantly come back to this jam, in fact using it often to show people unfamiliar w/ the Dead an example of their uniqueness and greatness. Just curious, what's your favorite China Cat jam-wise?

Really amazing how Bobby's guitar, at times, mimics what a piano or keyboardist would play...he actually mentions this in a 2014 or 2015 interview, how he realized that no guitarists were playing that way which helped him develop such a unique approach to rhythm guitar. It's amazing how if you take out his guitar track, how much this changed the feel of the song. Of course all members made the Dead what it was, but I'd venture to say that Bobby was the backbone of the Dead.
@dlm9293

Pretty sure I remember Bobby Ace talking about how McCoy Tyner and John Coltrane's dynamic greatly influenced his rhythm playing. How he heard the interplay between the piano and sax and thought to transpose that between guitarists in a rock n roll band. Could be wrong.
@lawrencegeusz4890
@lawrencegeusz4890 Жыл бұрын
I agree that no one plays like Bob Weir and he complimented Garcia so beautifully. Crosby said at one time he wanted to be invited into the Dead but also said there was no way he could do it as well as Bob. Coming from another exceptional rhythm player I thought that said a lot.
@newusernamehere4772
@newusernamehere4772 Жыл бұрын
Bobby was the heart, Jerry was the soul, Phil was the brains, Billy was the backbone, Mickey was the muscle, Keith was the piano player and Donna was the girl (lol and I'm a huge fan of the Godchauxs). Later on Brent became the Soul, Bobby became the Nuts and Jerry became the Jerry.

Very cool! One time in AZ, it had rained for a week straight... two shows, Sat and Sun... no rain but overcast... big water pit in the center of the field.. when the boys played this song, and right on the word sunshine the clouds broke and sun splashed across the crowd... a truly magical moment I shall never forget. This song has always been special for me since then...

thats an awesome story! I just had a pretty magic experience with this song. i ordered tix for the bobby/bruce show in oakland from gdtstoo, and the letter they came in had the lyrics to to this song ' good to know you got shoes to wear' so i started listening to the song, then on the same trip to Cali, i went to a Dark Star show and dosed, my first dose at a dead show, and when they played this and said that line jeff looked right into my eyes and nodded at me. If thats not a sign, idk what is
