"When we were producing the DVD of The Grateful Dead Movie in 2004, the first unreleased song we transferred to see if we'd be able to include bonus songs was this version of Sugaree. It was selected for a number of reasons: it was excellent; there were several camera angles filmed, and it was short-enough to do a test on. Once the 16mm film was transferred and edited, and then synced with the audio, we realized we'd be able to include plenty of bonus material. This wonderful Sugaree began that process." - David Lemieux

Somebody should of been video taping Spring of'77, especially the smoking playing during Sugaree. I love this '74 Winterland Dead with the Eyes and Stella Blue. Jerry's so vibrant back then.

I remember some years back I made some moccasins during a great ful read patch and tried to sale them on ETSY and some spokesperson from greatful dead merchandising contacted me for copyright infringement. To this day I still haven't sold the moccasins. Cool looking moccasins s though.

My grandparents were deadheads. I had one of the bears as a stuffed animal. Grateful Dead will always make me think of my beautiful grandmother.

All of Jerry's songs including this one were co-written with Robert Hunter - Jerry wrote the music, Robert wrote the lyrics. An absolute genius.

I’m 20 and the dead are still a jam for me. Got into them in middle and high school and haven’t stopped. I’m normally punk rock or into metal, but GD never fail to send me to another plane of reality.

I am in my 50's and discovered them on Sirius. 15 years ago, I bought their American Beauty and Workingman's Dead and liked them a lot but once I heard their live jams I fell deep in love. Just taken. I feel regret for not spending more of my life embracing them but, I guess I should be grateful. You are lucky Broadway! Peace

I recently lost a very close friend of Mine. His name was Tom Buckley and He lived in Brewer Maine. I loved Him dearly. He wasn’t a Deadhead but He absolutely knew all about this Song. When I found out He passed away I immediately put this song on. It has new meaning to Me for the rest of My life. God Bless Ya Tom. 🙏

For the first time I really listened to Kreutzmann's drumming on THIS song. I'd always liked his playing but I couldn't figure out why. Now I got it. He held his sticks in the "traditional grip" instead of "matching" in the American style. He didn't begin playing jazz, but he LEARNED about playing in that style on his own, following some of the outstanding jazz players at the time. What a guy! I also learned that he learned a lot about drumming from...guess who? Mickey Hart, of course!

I was listening to the dead for a while before I actually saw them perform. In my mind I had been picturing Jerry singing in Bob's voice, and Bob singing in Jerry's voice. It was a surprise hearing that beautiful voice coming from Jerry.

When I was young I ran away, when I got to the Appalachian mountains I heard this song and fell in love with it. I was so young, too young to know about the blues but I knew them too well. Im still running, and listening to sugaree.outlaw for life, lonely road, but that's what it takes. Last of a dying breed. Just don't tell em you know me

its super nice. I heard it was the heroine that started to get him and started to effect his pipes. Its messed up what a few years on heroine can do to a person, if you want to see a zombie absolutely shred a guitar watch the Dead in the early-mid 80s. I heard a quote from Jerry that he wasn't down with equating drugs with death, but in my opinion that was a terrible misstep by this beautiful man, the amount his body aged in 20 years is so sad

I never was a deadhead. I'm 72. I guess I just didn't understand their lyrics. But tonight I listened to this song, by chance for the first time. I'm NOW a deadhead! Thanks, Jerry. I bought my son several of your beautiful ties. He'll be 46 this November. I think he might like being turned on to this song, for this year's bday present! He's a music lover, just like his momma!
