The GF are legendary. I’m not a Deadhead but I do acknowledge that their music is excellent and I can understand why they are so loved. A really great group of musicians who could jam on stage for hours. They’ll grow on you Chod, the more you listen to them.

This song came out maybe 25 years after they first started out. I think it was the first time that one of their songs got played on Top 40 radio. It got them a whole new younger audience who had been curious about the Grateful Dead. This was about the time they were getting their first Grey hairs. You get good credit for your honest reaction.

Check out Eyes of the World from the Wake Up to Find Out. It's live from the Nassau Coliseum on 3/29/90. I know there's a video of it on KZfaq. In the middle of the song Wynton Marsalis does a jazz saxophone solo that will knock your socks off.

"Casey Jones" was my first exposure to the Dead, and I think it's one you'd like. It has one of my favorite solos on a studio album. Slightly off topic, Susan Tedeschi does an amazing mashup of the John Prine song "Angel From Montgomery" and the Grateful Dead song "Sugaree".

This was one of their last albums before the passing of Jerry Garcia. An uplifting poppy survival tune. They have so McNuggets different styles and at times they can be genius when they play live or not so much.

Touch of Grey was a fun song. Played for years before they recorded a "studio" version of it. Far more fun to see back in 1982 when it was "Jerry's New Song." - That said, I think y'all need to explore more of what the "Grateful Dead" were... which was a DIFFERENT experience every night - here is a video from Oct. 12th 1989 from a show in New Jersey - it is queued up to "Jack Straw" which was played to end the set - notice how loose the musicians are with this song as they are already well warmed up when they played it - it ended the 1st set of the evening - keep watching / listening to the next song which began the 2nd set - hear how "cold" they are for a few minutes as they get warm and loose again to play more music - the song to open the 2nd set was "Hey Pockey Way" (a song originally performed by The Meters) - if you have interest keep watching the set how it unfolded that night * it was at a time just before their absolute peak of performing (many consider Spring 1990 as the absolute panicle of their performing career) - enjoy kzfaq.info/get/bejne/irxhi9yWvtXTppc.htmlsi=eBjRBvS8BFogSBBU&t=3024

The best Dead transition is the 5/8/77 Barton Hall concert Scarlet Begonias > Fire on the Mountain. Save up about 25 mins to get through it, but I challenge you to say when the transition happens.

You have to attend their concert to understand and get in to their music. There's no comparison between listening while attending the concert compared to just simply listening to their album. That was a band that would jam 6 to 8 hours. They jammed 3 to 4 hours, take a 30 minute break, and then jam again 3 to 4 hours. They didn't do a lot of transitioning. They mainly played for the hippie crowd. A crowd that liked to get high, mellow out, and relax to their jamming. Once you attend their concert, you get hooked on their live music. It's just something you have to experience to understand and get into it.

one cant really fully "get" the Dead as long as one is looking through the lens of technical music construction, or even 'making music'. what they are is a manifestation of the spirit in the world, without being willing to *hear* what is there, which is not music, one will never get them

This is a good song. Yeah, a bit repetitive and their only "Top 40" hit, but you HAVE GOT to check out "Help on the Way->Slipknot->Franklin's Tower" from One From the Vault or "Scarlet Begonias->Fire on the Mountain" from Cornell '77. Grateful Dead had their best (and worst) moments during live performances. Check out either of those combos mentioned above and you won't be disappointed. They will take you on a comfortable ride.

I think Chod reacted to the 5/8/77 Scarlet, but didn't do Fire. I recall he thought it was a studio version and enjoyed it. But that One from the Vault Help/Slip/Frank is awesome, needs to have the band intos leading into it though. gives me goosebumps everytime

Definitely not a Dead Head, myself! They literally have 3 songs I like... this one, Truckin and Casey Jones. They have quite the cult following, tho. This song came out in the late 80's. The other two in the earlier 70's.

Well, I'm an old Deadhead of about 72 live shows. The Dead could definitely have shows that kinda sucked, although when I started going in the mid 80's, their bad shows were further and fewer between. Please, could I recommend just one song, from a show in Chicago that my late-husband and I were at, that just rocked the joint. Brent Mydland had recently passed, Vince Welnick was just getting his feet wet, and Bruce Hornsby had joined in to lend a hand. My husband and I were about 30 rows back, standing on rickety old chairs (because you just couldn't sit) dancin and rockin to an AwEsOmE Shakedown Street. Undoubtedly one of the best we'd ever heard. I understand not liking the Dead, at least sometimes, and if you've picked the wrong version, of the wrong song, it could ruin it for you. But I'd be ever so happy if you'd trust me on this one. As someone once said about the Dead, They're not the best at what they do, they're the only ones that do what they do. Here's the link: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fdx4g7CXvMi7dZ8.html

Don't forget, Chod is the same person who reacted to Scarlet Begonias LIVE Cornell and thought it was studio 🤦 Saying that the live version of Truckin' you reacted to "fell apart and they kept going and it still fell apart" just shows you know nothing about the Dead. The Dead were improvisational, that's how they played. So, forgive me for not losing sleep over him and his wife's reaction to the Dead. They just don't get it and should probably stop reacting to the Dead. They're embarrassing themselves.
