That's what makes this film truly tragic. Although the audience gets a personal view of Seita and Setsuko's story, it's easy to forget that this brutal war effected millions.

I totally agree with you. I watched it 3 times 10 years ago. I always recommend this movie to everyone (who thinks that anime is for kids and there is no clue to watch anime). But I'm never brave enough to watch it again. couple years ago I turned it on but I just watched for within 10 minutes (where the brother's soul was looking at his dead body at the train station), then I had to stop

I agree as long as it does not become an argument for allowing more Muslim immigration. Seita and Setsuko's behaviour is far from that of the muslim parallel society in many countries, and this great anti war film must not be hijacked as propaganda for pro migration.

Really? REALLY? Do you really think that they don't suffer, that they don't struggle to live day by day-- *that they have friends and family they care about!?* Why don't you get it? Children... placed in a world that falls apart around them... having to fend for themselves at an age where you were learning the alphabet for the first time... You. I. We all share our humanity. Suffering is horrible... War is horrible... *It doesn't matter which side you're on!*

I think the hardest scenes for me to watch in this movie was when the aunt forcibly takes the mother's stuff from Setsuko. I honestly have to walk away whenever it gets to that bit. She's just a little girl whose mother is never coming back to her and those items are all she has left of her. But that worthless aunt takes it all. And so heartlessly and coldly. Meanwhile, Seita is torn between defending his little sister or keeping the roof over their heads. It's heartbreaking.

White Night I would say the message I took from grave if fireflies is that when times are hard everyone does what they need to to get by. The farmer was not a bad person and yet he was violent when someone threatened to take away their food. The aunt was hungry too. The clothing was a chance to feed her family. At that time, food was more important than objects.

I used to be a rather bitter person because of personal issues with my father which lead me to be not very affective with the rest of the people around me (friends, mother, half-brother/sister) I remember the first time I watched this movie about 5 years ago. I cried so much from the moment the mother dies, I cried myself to sleep. I remember imagining the situation but with my little cousins, siblings, everyone I cared about. I remember I was alone at home (I never thought that movie could get me so emotional) and fell asleep and when my mother arrived she saw my tear-stained face and asked me what happened and told her it was just a thing I saw on tv (didn't told her it was a movie or the name of the "thing") hugged her and told her I was really happy to see she arrived home safe, she just hugged me back. Now there's not a single day that she goes out to work that I don't tell her that I love her and to look out for herself with extra-care at streets, since we live in a fairly dangerous city. The same with my little brother and grandpa. That movie broke something in me, I swear since then I get very emotional towards news of murders, rapes or abandon.

Omg, your comment made me cry..... I'm glad you are not bitter as you were. This movie really does change people on the views of the world....I always say "Be safe and have a good day!" to my mother now because of this movie (and the anime/manga Fruits Basket bc the main character's mom dies) . I'm always so scared that one of my family members may not be here the next day, and always hope that everything will be okay. I say the same thing to everyone in my family, because I know how dangerous it can be out there. People get sick....and other unfortunate things happen too...if you know what I mean. I treat my friends the same way. The last thing I ever want to happen is to lose someone close to me.

When she handed him the rocks to eat and I just... Okay you cannot just compare this to Disney. This is real. This isn't a happy, exciting, 'finding love' movie. This is a real, painful, 'stay alive' movie. The death of a lion hurts way less then the preventable death of a four year old girl who was completely innocent. There, I've said it.
@blara2401
@blara2401 6 жыл бұрын
Mufasa's death will impact people even further because most people experienced it when they were very young and amongst a mountain of dissimilar media that would never explicitly portray death or a corpse. Or, at least, not talk about it. Besides, it's respected in the Disney universe precisely because it's unique there...the same way Grave of the Fireflies is unique in Ghibli history. It's pretty much as dark as they ever got.

Here's a Fact : This is based on a real story, he had an Brother and a Sister but the movie only had the sister. In the real story, the brother lived, he buried his Brother who died earlier on and his Sister. He thought later about Suicide but didn't go through with it, and later wrote the book that made this adaptation happen because he felt guilt. The reason he dies at the end is because it was requested by Nosaka Akiyuki, the person who Seita is based on because he regrets not dying with his siblings to move on with them. Akiyuki died in 2015 at 83, so he's finally laid to rest with his siblings.

My mother once told me that the day I was born, my 5-year-old brother held me and said: "I'll take care of him". During the years that followed we seemed not to get along very well, brothers' stuff, you know. He always was very tough to me, maybe I was probably not the ideal brother too (nobody is). One late night we were walking back home and he said: "Take the keys, if something happens, you run home". Nothing happened that night, I still have no idea why he said that, but the more I think of it, the more I appreciate my 25-year-old brother. To all the older brothers out there: if you did your best, your efforts will one day be understood, slowly but surely.

Kerveros Hellas in reality the older brother did not die. He went on to live and wrote the book that the film is based on. The opening scene of the film where he dies is a metaphore for his own guilt. He wished he had died with his sister because of the overwhelming guilt he felt over the loss he suffered. But he lived to regret it until the end of his life.

What breaks my heart the most about this movie is that its actually based on a true story. A majority of this film actually happened during the war from the view point of Akiyuki Nosaka, the guy who wrote the original story (Based on his life). He lived to a relatively long age, sadly, he became a pretty bitter man due to the war. Made good strides in the world, and made good in the world. But the scars I can imagine are unrepairable. Don't worry your little heads for now, he is still alive and well from I can tell at this point (age 83).

I think the scene at the end is my favourite one, it symbolises how we have been able to step forward as a society and rebuild our cities, countries and spirits from the devastating ashes. I hope nothing like WW happen ever again and we can't NEVER forget about all of those innocent kids and people out there in wars that were not even caused by them. This film just speaks to your heart in such a unique way, that's why I love it so bad.

The main reason why this music still makes me cry is that after my stepdad’s dog died I had a dream about her standing at that same spot Setsuko was standing but instead of fireflies it was the lights in our backyard and there was a fence she was always behind for her whole life. Her tongue was hanging out as usual. In the dream my stepdad was telling me and my siblings to go inside. I kept tapping him and shouting at him for him to pay attention. “ Jose! Jose! Look it’s Butter! She’s right there and she’s waiting! Come on!”, I was shouting but he didn’t look back. I looked back and all I saw was her tail leave on the other side of the house. It’s ironic because Butter died inside the fence. That dream told me she’s free! 4/23/2018

Just watched Grave of the Fireflies. HOW DID I NOT CRY?? CLEARLY, THERE'S SOMETHING WRONG WITH ME. But then again, I'm feeling super-depressed right now... that sorta counts as crying on the inside... _right??_ This is almost as masterful as Schindler's List. Nothing of any sort of animation will ever have the capability to go beyond this hidden gem.

a few days after my dog was sick, while my father was driving me to school, he told me that my dog died. I started sobbing but immediately stopped cause I already came to school, and the whole day I wasn't thinking about it cause I hate crying in public. at the end of the day, when I sit at the bus back from school, I usually put happy songs like Owl City, Taylor Swift or something, but this day I just felt like I'm dying inside and this song was in my head the whole day, so I put this song on my phone and just started sobbing, I didn't even care if someone saw me, I think I was even sobbing loudly (I don't know, I had headphones) but I just got off the bus with completely wet face.

Can people seriously stop comparing this to disney, we get it. Disney movies are for families and are prevented from getting this heavy, or at least hated by the producers when they do get away with heaviness (lilo and stich barely scratches the surface of it's sad themes and the people above the creators were against it being made). Even most of the other ghibli movies didn't compare to the pure, brutal realism of this movie, but in the end, why should that matter? This film is unique and stands on its own as a depressing, historical tragedy and I'm glad other movies can't compare.
