Suicide is my favorite character by far. The whole time he's asking why they even wanted him around other than having his car. He hates that the cemetary is full of garbage and when Trash rubs up on him he feels like it's disrespectful to do that in a cemetery. He's also the first one to go in to help Tina. What a guy Suicide was

Fun fact: according to the director's commentary, a studio executive walked through during the filming of the trash dancing scene. She was mostly nude, pubic hair on full display and all, and the exec threw a fit. Agreed to let the scene go as long as she shaved down there. When she did, and they resumed filming the scene, he allegedly covered his eyes and yelled "Oh god, it's even worse! You can see EVERYTHING!" So, they ended up using a prosthesis for the final version of the scene.

The chemical in this is called 'Trioxin'. That's what reanimated the zombies here. And Trioxin zombies are no joke, as you saw. Also, found it hilarious how, when Trash started stripping, you hear "Trash is getting naked again." like she does this all the time. Which is probably why they were told they'd be shot if they went back to that one park. Also, the guy who played Suicide in this was also briefly in Friday the 13th: The New Blood with Miguel Nunez, the 'token' black guy all these movies had back then.

One of the first people to do a First Time Watch of this that I've seen. Great Reaction Video! BTW Linnea Quigley who played Trash had a little special effects covering on her crotch area. They had to because it would have given the movie an X rating to have her full frontal dancing of the tombstone. The 80's had censored everything back then, especially in Horror movies.

42:28 you are correct! The character of Ernie is portrayed as having some sort of connection to WWII Nazi Germany. Aside from the luger and the crematorium, if you notice, there is a picture of Eva Braun on his bulletin board behind him next to the steel front door. Also when we first see him in the film when he is embalming, he is listening to old German war music on his headphones. Incidentally, the door on the crematorium itself is eerily shaped similar to those of the Nazi concentration camps’ crematoriums. Also, the crematorium room is lit up (shadow lighting) to resemble bars on the walls, which resembles the prisons that were the concentration camps
@ZombieBite1991

A spot on theory, but I'm afraid that as a gun nerd, I have to issue a single correction: Ernie is carrying a P38, made by Walther. Originally, they wanted to have him carry a full sized Mauser C-96, but it proved too bulky and difficult to draw for action scenes. So instead, they opted for the sleeker P38 instead. I believe there was a novelization where he carried a Luger, and all three of these pistols very much fit the Nazi motif. All that nit picking said, thank you for highlighting all of the hints regarding his past! I never noticed the Eva Braun picture, nor was I able to pick up that he was listening to war era German music. Makes me wonder if that pipe we first see him with could be period-accurate as well? Plenty of effort into details that may not be caught by most, but it's things like that that separate good movies from awesome ones.

I love how Dan O'bannon used real life NotZee Ernst Kaultenbruner(he helped refine the furnaces for more efficiency for the Afrika Corp if I remember right) for his basis for Ernie. The picture of Eva Braun on his desk, his singing of the wartime song for the invasion of France while embalming, and his Walther pistol(the movie has an alternate history where he faked his end). I never caught on til I was older and did the research(ah the innocence of youth) and realized DOB put that much forethought and backstory into the characters. It sure puts a different perspective on why Ernie was so interested in the zombies and their feelings considering his dark past. One of the funniest and scariest movies for me growing up, the unstoppable nature of the zombies and their fast movements makes the terror in this one!

I think that's a sign of a good movie when you the viewer feel like you're there with the protagonists trying figure things out and sharing the same thought process and reaction. Too many things I like about this movie to mention. Trash getting full on naked (even though she's wearing small prosthetic) it's wild.

Italian zombie films made by Brava like "Zombie (2)" and "Zombie 3" are very gory in a realistic rotting, decaying way. As far as nudity goes, actually she did have a prosthesis covering her front lady bits. And as a person who grew up in the 70's and 80's (I was in my 20's), no, we didn't watch these films to get off. It was just more socially accepted, and we didn't have near the amount of censorship and "right think" like we have today. It was a different time, different culture. Just like the 70's were.

What I heard about that Trash naked scene was that the producers were against it unless she was shaven down there. When she started dancing you could see everything, and I mean as her gynecologist could see everything. So the same producer said that they need her bush back to cover he vjayjay hole, but because it will take time to grow they made her a pubic hair wig so production will not be disturbed.

well if you question that you got to question how can a human can bite through a human skull (we can't) .. let alone a human with a mouth full of old decayed teeth. i eman seriously they are chomping on heads like it was softer than a watermelon even. and the sound effect is litterally created with some one biting through a crisp apple mixed with the sound of a chicken leg being snapped.

Ernie is based on Ernst Kaltenbrunner. A committed anti-Semite and fanatical Hitler loyalist, Kaltenbrunner oversaw a period in which the genocide of Jews intensified. He was the highest-ranking member of the SS to face trial. The crematorium in the film is based on the look of the ones from the death camps. Ernie listens to the German Afrika Corps march song "Panzer rollen in Afrika vor" on his Walkman while he embalms bodies, carries a German Walther P38, has a picture of Eva Braun in his morgue.

If you haven't already seen it, you should watch the documentary "More Brains!" They talk about Trash's nude scene and how they tried a prosthetic cover for her..."lady bits". They dive into all kinds of details and it's really interesting!

that was a nuke at the end not napalm. the rain wasn't a concern becasue after teh nuke all teh dead folks were basically turned to ash by said nuke. . as for ernie he was some where in the age of 56-70 years old , they never never specified his age but he was a good bit older than Burt (at least 5-10 years older). this was 1984 so WWII was only 40-45 years prior. Germany fell in 1944 , so subtract 40 from say 56 and that gives you 16, a common age of soliders in WWII considering many would lie aboutt ehri age to join the military (same as in the US). Ernie was likely older than 56 though. so yeah ernie was definitely old enough to have been around in WWII he was likely either a boy or a young man between the ages of 10-18 . if he was ten it's likely he was in the hitler youth group and that is how he aquired a luger. but far more liekly he was between teh age of 16-18 and was an actual solider in the german army. Note this does not atomatically mean "Nazi". not all german soliders were members of the nazi party itself. another fun fact many many people miss. none of the "just" bit people actually came back to life (or undeath) . only the ones that got a good dousing in the chemical (such as trash who died while in the rain) came back. neither suicide nor scuz were reanimated just from a bite. making this movie also the first movies where the (zombie) bites don't necesarily reanimate you. though i've had some people argue against that using the sequels , but those are flimsy arguments since they are sequels and NOT the original done by Dan O' Bannon. and there was no lawsuit . just an agreement by romero and russo.

Actually the mortician would of been the right age at 65. During 1980s he was probably a concentration camp cremator.

correction actress playing Trash IS wearing a piece over her lady bits. They had her shave and did the dance sequence then thought it was too revealing so they made her like a ken doll flap. An the chick in blue dress was stripper or porn star who couldnt understand why she wasnt asked to be vaked

Ignoring the sequels that were made, there *was* a dang-tootin funny sequel written. It eventually got made as CHUD 2. It's obviously the comedy sequel this needed and it's painfully charming! (No need to see CHUD 1 - which is cute but CHUD 2 _is_ the proper sequel to this!)
