Gravel Road Repair with a Woods Box Blade! Best tool for the job!

Now that spring is here, it's time to repair the gravel road going into the cabin. It was a rough winter on the road and there are lots of ruts and holes. I'm lucky to have a gravel resource and even luckier to be able to try out a brand new box blade. What an awesome piece of equipment. With just over a mile of road to maintain, this box blade made short work of it.

Tip for future reference, you have a bucket on the front. When you scrape up big rocks, just scoop them with the bucket on the next pass.

1. Adjust the top link until the side edge is level 2. Adjust the right lifting arm down to get the crown

Hey there, I do do that sort of thing professionally and have a box blade as well. They are an essential tool for the tractor. However for fixing gravel / dirt driveways and roads, a land plane is the bomb. It's easier to use than the box blade, way faster, and does a way better job of the finished grade. Watch a bunch of videos on them and I promise you will be getting one and wondering why you didn't get one when you bought your tractor. I promise you will not be sorry. Make sure to get one with scarifying rippers to break stuff up when things are hard packed. If there ever was a perfect application for one, it's your place ....... Dan from Montana.

Someone might have said this already, but if you tilt with the back of the box blade down, you can compact with moving forward. It’s how we build house pads with sand here in Florida.

Adding a hydraulic top link makes it much easier. Tipped forward to dig and move earth. Tipped backward to lay 1/2" or more of earth as well as pack with the rear blade edge.

We bought a Woods BSM72P this summer gone by. When I searched it on KZfaq your videos were the best by far on a Woods box blade in action. I just got around to using it today .What a joy to use . Sure beats smoothing everything by back dragging. Anyway . Thanks for uploading the videos , they were very helpful.

It takes some practice, Tip/Tilt really helps when adjusting box blade from seat of tractor. Also really helps having hydraulic teeth to pull up rocks before running box blade over road.

What works for me is turning the blade on a scraper blade around and dragging it backwards. it doesn't dig in as much and levels it out nicely. Hope this might help. But I do put extra weight on the blade, just for down-force. Thanks for the videos.
@profdave2861

Your road looks soft enough that you probably don’t need to use the rippers. The blade alone will scrape enough soil to keep the box full, and by avoiding the rippers it will prevents digging up so many rocks. As others have said, start with your box blade level to the ground - that’s usually all you need to scrape the high spots and fill the holes.

I just picked up a Black Maxx 60" snow thrower front kit for $500 bucks, never used at an estate sale. They said it took 19 gpm, I got 17 gpm. I'm thinking if need be, I can get smaller sprockets and fabricate them on it, but may not need it. I have a quick connect for my 4&1 bucket, hoping it will work. I'll know in a few days. Nice vid thanks.

I've never used a box blade...but a relative of mine has one. He was able to dig out a foundation into a slight hillside for his shop with the teeth down. You might want to check air pressure in front tires. They looked a little low at times. Maybe they are suppose to run low pressure??? Road looks great. Do a little yearly touch up and should stay nice for years to come. My grandad should have got a box blade. He had several old tractors. His driveway was a mess. Sometimes you would scratch the bottom of your car on rocks. Driving heavy tractors on it when it was wet probably didn't help...but no choice when you have farming to do.

Others mentioned the tires too but I checked the pressure before I started. Maybe I had a heavy load of gravel in the bucket...it was wet and heavy.

I had a section of D3 caterpillar track chain attached from each end of a 12ft wide steel bar with a steel cable clevis hitch point at the center of the bar. I would drag that with a small tractor and freshen up the gravel driveway, fill in ruts, etc. The caterpillar track chain would take on a triangular shape as you pulled it around. It would scrape and funnel towards the center. It did an okay job. Box blade looks great.

I pull mine with my 91 HP kioti it is great till you hit a root then the wheels just spin. On the road for serious work the box blade can’t be beat. To do regular passes get a land plane from woods with teeth. I hit my driveway once a month with it one pass down and back and I am done. Takes longer to put it on than to do the work.

Great job on the road. For the black flies....my friend bought a hard broad rim hat like a safari hat and drilled small holes all around the outer edge 1" in. Then he took fishing line and ping pong balls. Make the fishing line different lengths for 5" to 9". Attach the balls by drilling through and tying line then put other end through holes in the hat and tie. They will be like bobbers around your head. When the flys or mosquitos come around just turn your head side to side. It will keep the nuisance away.

I used a loader and boxblade on back to plow 2 feet of snow this winter! It worked great! Started with the loader in one direction then backed with the blade pushing in the other direction! I plowed a quarter mile road and 6 yards in 3 hours! Being able to work in both directions cuts down on the time to do the job! As well as the fuel consumption! Less than 5 gallons! And it was hard pushing!!!
