I don't think Myanmar is ready for democratic rule. They need to have a very strong totalitarian government, to rule the various provinces and tribes to keep the country whole. Democratic liberties would see civil wars and fragmentations of the country. Only the American would be satisfied with that.

@@tayphilp The northern landscape of Myanmar is dense tropical jungle. The tribes living in settlements of bamboo huts, and hunting with bow and arrows and home-made guns. They just want to be left alone. That is not possible. Timber, and natural resources and drugs means these people will be exploited and controlled by drug lords and corrupt officials. The tribal people don't need democracy and freedom of speech. They need a strong man to protect them.
