As others have said, Ariel is Alex Hirsch's twin sister. She was obsessed with boy boy bands as a kid, and this episode premise was entirely inspired by her.

Fun fact: The girl who screams "He was talking to me!" in the audience is voiced by Alex Hirsch's twin sister, he made this episode for her.

Ariel Hirsch is creator Alex Hirsch’s twin sister and the inspiration for Mabel. As a kid she wore colorful sweaters, wanted a pet pig, and loved boy bands. For this episode, Alex Hirsch got her favorite NSYNC member (Lance Bass) to voice some of the Several Times members and also brought Ariel on to do a voice cameo as the girl who says “he was talking to me!” Ariel got to meet Lance Bass so “HAPPY NOW ARIEL?” is a nod to this story as I believe Alex writes all of the ciphers himself. It’s all quite wholesome really :)

The time travel episode is when Wendy and Robbie got together and started dating. They never broke up after that, this is the only time we've seen them fight and subsequently break up like that. Though it's heavily implied that Robbie has been a pretty crappy boyfriend up until now.

I don't think the CD ever actually had any magic or power. Dipper accidentally played the song for Wendy again when he was trying to get her to hear it in reverse and it didn't stop her from breaking up with Robbie. Sure, it could be the idea of "knowing there is a trick means the trick doesn't work", but I think it was just exactly what Wendy said. She genuinely just thought it was sweet that Robbie wrote a song for her to show that he was sorry and to find out that he completely lied and just ripped off the song from elsewhere made her feel hurt and angry. It was the last straw and she was done giving chances to someone who really didn't seem like he actually cared about her beyond having a make-out partner. And is it weird that I kind of like that Dipper was called out too? Yeah, exposing Robbie was the right thing to do but immediately trying to move in on Wendy without any consideration of the emotional pain she just went through was incredibly inconsiderate and self-centered. I cut him some slack because he's 12 but I do think it's a good lesson for him and kids watching the show to learn.

So not only was the premise of this episode inspired by Alex Hirsch's twin sister Ariel, but Ariel absolutely loved NSYNC, and Alex was able to get Lance Bass to guest star in this episode. Honestly, like that deserves some sort of sibling award.

The creator of the show based Dipper off himself and his twin sister, Ariel, is based off Mabel. They spent the summer with their grandfather as kids, who Stan is based off. Ariel also had her boy-crazy phase during the summer so this episode was basically a present from her twin brother.

That was a nice little moment of the guys humming along to the opening.

I remember when Gravity Falls first aired and being so excited to watch whatever the show had in store, but who knew what was to come man. I had just turned 11 when it aired, and was almost 16 when it ended. Such a journey, and I've been so excited to watch you guys go on it too! I love getting to see a fresh set of eyes watch the show for the first time. Can't wait till you hit the end of season 1 but espcially season 2!!! It's highly ironic that we find out Rachel from Friends even described to her girlfriends in an Alternate Timeline that 'she' wanted to "go on a break" with her husband Barry just so she could have sex with someone else (hilariously Joey, who is a famous Soap Opera Star who didn't die off in the show). It constitutes that both her and Ross have a similar definition of what a "break" from a relationship can stipulate, even if they are from two different timelines.😆

I think it's great they got Lance Bass (famously from the boy band *NSYNC) to play all the members of Sev'ral Timez.

Funnily enough, the first Foo Fighters album was all Dave Grohl by himself, Vocals, Guitar, Bass, Drums, he recorded all the parts for every song and then formed a band afterwards to tour with.

This episode is a personal fave of mine because Lance Bass guest starred! Ariel and I both had HUGE crushes on Lance. I was listening to the behind the scenes Gravity Fall podcast where Alex and Ariel talked about this episode. Not only did she get to see an NSYNC concert when she was 12, she actually met Lance when they were making this episode. I totally died!

If you’ve ever had a sister growing up in the late 80’s to early 2000’s then you’ll really be able relate to this episode. They’re all voiced by Lance Bass by the way, LOL

The word band is used commonly with people who play instruments, but it defines the group not the activity. Those people are just instrumentalists, but because they are together playing music they are considered a band. So “boy band” still works. I haven’t seen it, but I don’t think instruments were played in the movie Band of Brothers; I could be wrong though.
