I read about this somewhere else but people think Mabel trusted Grunkle Stan because he said “please” where he couldn’t say it in the “Boss Mabel” episode…incredible writing

Because so many people theorized Stan's Brother, Alex Hirsch had to deliberately throw people off by leaking fake spoilers of McGucket being the Author. It was honestly really cool how hard he worked to ensure a lot of people would be shocked by the true revelation.

That "I trust you" is one of the most iconic moments in cartoons story.

This episode had tons of scenes that had to be cut for time. Originally Stan was going to be imprisoned in a paranormal jail alongside other oddities the government had captured. Another version had Stan thrown in jail with Gideon and the two team up to escape. Meanwhile Dipper and Mabel would've been locked up in the local schoolhouse but they'd use the president's key from Irrational Treasure to escape. Source: Episode's commentary track.

When I tell you this episode BROKE the Fandom....it SHATTERED it to tiny pieces. It was just surreal. We were all just like.....WTF WTF WTF.

I love how much confusion over “which one is Stan” could be cleared up with a single small detail. It’s fun seeing the discussion while knowing the answer.

His plan was already well underway by the time he found out about the potential world-ending capacity of the machine, and by then he'd come too far to turn back - he had to save his brother. (which just goes to show, you shouldn't out your important warnings in invisible ink)

We've actually seen Stan's brother a few times before this episode! In the episode where we see Stan's memory of learning how to fight, you can see a figure in the background with their face in a book. And then in the time-traveling pig when "stan" opens the door to the shack to see what's going on it's actually the author! And then we've gotten hints to his brother too, like with the wax statue episode and the episode where they switch bodies you see stan playing with his brother's glasses!

When the crew started gravity falls I think we can all agree this was the episode we were all waiting for

6:16 - *“Hot Belgian Waffles! Wait! I'm alone. I can swear for **_real!”_* And this is where we learned that Stan censors himself around the kinds. That means the Stan we've seen all summer was actually the _toned- down, kid-friendly_ version! That is the most shocking revelation in this episode. I noticed the license plate in Stan's car, all the way back in episode 2, and I thought "Ah, 'Stan' must be short for 'Stanley'. That makes sense." Then, a few episodes later, when Stan was addressed by his full name as "Stanford", I thought the creators had just changed their minds about what his full name was, and forgot to alter the car design. I had _no idea_ that there was such a massive mystery hiding behind this seemingly innocent discrepancy.

The key on Mabel's shirt actually represents Mabel as the key to opening the portal.

Now that you know the twist you definitely are gonna have to go back to watching previous episodes. Like the episode where they find that secret bedroom you see Stan pick up his brother's glasses and then later in the episode is just sitting there still looking at the glasses with a remorseful look on his face. God this show was so good.

I laughed so hard at Mabel's "I am the God of Destruction" line when this episode debuted. Still gets me now.

This Episode solidified Soos as one of my favorite Characters. The "I have a new mission in life. PROTECTING THESE KIDS"

Eric's Descent into madness was incredible. This would be the best villain arc in any performance

Sure everyone has their own personal favorite episode of Gravity Falls but this is the one episode that is pretty much unanimously agreed on is the best episode of the entire series and that's saying something for a show where even the weaker episodes are still considered good. The one shot of Mabel going "Grunkle Stan. I trust you." with her hands raised is one of the most (if not the most) iconic shot of the entire show the amount of fanart for that scene alone that came out after the episode aired was insane.

Man, this was an intense episode, but I also felt it was one of several episodes of Gravity Falls with the best lines and jokes. Spotlight goes to ''Obviously, follow that cab!''

Mabel trusted Stan because he said “Please” which is the hardest word for him to say and she knows that.

While it's got a bombastic finale that's on a whole nother level in and of itself, this is truly the climax of the show. Everything build to this. I remember just staring at the end credits like "What the..." What an episode.

Has anyone ever thought of the fact that Grunkle stan could be considered a genius now? Like yes he used the books as a guideline, but he did still spend 30+ years studying advanced science, inderdimensional theory, physics, engineering, and whatever else he needed to repair the portal. No point in using the books if he couldn’t understand what they were saying

I love that from this episode on forward we get to see just how much mabel is like stanley and dipper is like standford.

I love that this is the episode you guys landed on right before the 10 year anniversary of the show hit. It’s almost universally seen as the best episode of the series! The fact that new viewers are still floored by its ending all these years later says so much! I’m envious of you guys though, us poor souls had to wait 4 months to find out what happened next. Also, I love LOVE that you guys spend so much time on the keys and ciphers. They’re such an integral part of the show, and I love seeing people go through all that effort to decipher them, even long after the show has ended!

This is probably the best and most iconic episode of the entire series, as it’s where the driving central question of the whole show up to this point - “Who is the Author?” - _finally_ gets answered without coming across as un-satisfying all while still keeping the emotional moments and characters all centered and given great payoffs.

I’ve only just realized that the title was referring to the fact that Stan _wasn’t_ evil, even though it *seemed* like he was. Not what he seems!

The best episode in the series and I can’t believe Rick predicted it all these episodes ago.

I love how easy it is to read "STANLEY MOBILE" and completely miss the contradiction. They didn't notice it here and I sure as hell didn't either. That plate showed up in episode 2 and people STILL didn't notice how wrong it was!

I love the little details of alluded to Ford like the fact that everyone calls him Stanley yet Gideon calls him Stanford. or that in the thread web of Stan you see a report with all A+s in intellectual subjects but a D- in PE even though the Stan we know has always been kinda dumb and more brawny bc it’s actually Ford’s report card. Also young Stanley without Glasses in places and young Ford in Ep 3

Man, Gravity Falls has been one of the absolute best reaction shows that Blind Wave has ever done. Their determination and code breaking is just sooooo great.

I remember I cant stop talking about this reveal to my non-GravityFalls Fan Friends. I WAS SO OBSESSED!

I remember seeing the license plate in one of the first episodes that we saw Stan's car and wondering why it read STNLYMBL instead of STNFRDMBL. Like most other fans, I figured out that they were twins, but which twin was which? I didn't put it past Stanley to lose a finger to cover up that he was the author of the books.

Deception, illusion, belief, and scheming. Concluding in a spectacular episode, this was incomprehensibly amazing back when it was first released.

Eric actually is right that we saw those glasses before! In time travelers pig (S1E9) when Dipper and Mabel were traveling through time they run past the shack before it was the mystery shack "Stan" opens the door after they run past and he is wearing the glasses from the carpet episode because it was actually the brother!!

The reason why Mabel has a key sweater in this episode is because she is the key for the portal to open. This info is from the "Between the Pines" special.

The pay off of this episode was immense. The twin brother theory had been a thing since season one because of the STNLYMBL, Glasses, TT's pig door opening scene, the swingset in Stan's mind, and the matching hair shape of a kid reading a book in Stan's boxing memory. It sounded like a real stretch at first but it grew into something convincing so much that Alex Hirsch "leaked" a fake picture of McGucket writing the journals which obviously lead us to believe what Dipper believed in Society of the Blind Eye. But when this episode finally came everything changed.

Glad to see this keyword was found the same way I did it back in the day. When this episode first aired, I gave reverse deciphering the code a go (as not only did I not have a means to go back through the episode, but I wouldn't have a HD version to check for clarity). Since the code in the credits started with a 3 letter word, it was easy to guess "The", and reverse-solve it to get the first 3 letters of the key word. First letter, S. Ok, second letter, T. Thinking the Keyword could be some variation of Stan, such as Stanley or Stanford, I anticipated the 3rd letter to be A. Third letter? N. Well not only was that not what I expected, it didn't even make a word. Was the first word of the answer not "The"? What word even starts with Stn-? And then it hit like a bolt of lightning. The licence plate on Stan's car "STNLYMBL", which had always been a point of contention for the theorists (why would it be the Stanley Mobile if his name was Stanford?), but was just one of the subtle clues put into the show regarding Stan's true identity. Very satisfying to solve it like that.

Calvin is technically correct, he has seen STNLYMBL before on a license plate - just not from this episode. And I have to say, I used to read stnlymbl as “StanleyMabel” and I felt dumb because of course it was mobile lol Can’t wait for next week for my favorite episode!

Such a fun episode to watch. Sorry it took yall over 3 tries to find the key but I appreciate yalls dedication. Excited for yall to watch next week's episode as well as when we get close to the final. Great job as always.

Personally, I'd much rather they do the discussion and then the search for the key. I feel like they lose momentum and enthusiasm after so long.

Having just re-watched this episode a day ago, it still gives me the same impact and emotional rollercoaster as it did the first time I saw it. Those last two minutes always give me chills and make me start to well up. Proves to me how strongly this show still holds up

The most obvious place to see Stan’s license plate is at the end of The Golf War when Franz is hanging onto the car before he is knocked off into the sand. He’s standing right on the license plate and it’s a clue that people always miss

I remember after I found out Stan has a twin. When I reached the wax figure episode, it changed for me. Thought Stan was just narcissistic with the wax figure that looked like him. After this episode I was oooh he missed his brother.

This episode was quite the gamechanger that changed the course of Gravity Falls and later episodes of Season 2 forever. The FBI agents led by FBI Nick Offerman arrest Stan before he was going to tell The Twins The truth, leading to the chain of events when the Pine Twins and also Soos discover the dark secrets of Grunkle Stanford Pines and the Secrets and lies he's been hiding. Now I can understand that Dipper had the right to being furious and angry at Grunkle Stan for lying to him, Mabel and Soos and everyone and the secrets he's been keeping, but I feel Dipper was literally overreacting and "jumping the gun" that the Portal was a "Doomsday" bomb that was set to destroy Gravity Falls and the world while telling Mabel to shut it off and almost was agreeing with Nick Offerman and the FBI Agents and almost disowning Grunkle Stan. Now was it wrong that Grunkle Stan changed names and especially kept secrets and lies from the Twins? Yes Was it wrong that Grunkle Stan stole Government waste to power the Portal in the Bunker? Yes However, I have to agree on Stan that most of his actions weren't out of malicious intent, yeah he lied and was a scam artist but as he said, Stan was going to tell the Pine Twins the truth before the FBI Agents apprehend him and that the portal he constructed in the basement was to bring back the author of the Journals, later revealed to be his long lost brother, so I'm honestly glad Mabel didn't press the button and reluctantly trusted Grunkle Stan's words because if she had done it, Grunkle Stan would've been arrested, the Author of the Journals would've been stuck on the other side and the later episodes wouldn't have existed completely.

I love how, universally, even though nobody knows if Stan is Stan or not, everyone always cheers him on when he's escaping from holding.
