Crying is super super rare for me, but when Viserys made the speech at dinner saying that he was speaking to them as a father, husband, grandsire, it moved me. People called Viserys weak and easily manipulated, but even Daemon at the end realized that all he was trying to do was to keep the peace within his own family. Not as a king, but as a father, brother, husband, grandsire. Daemon reaching down and picking up the crown and putting it on his brothers head was also moving. This episode was art. Paddy deserves an Emmy, 100%!

Speaking of which, I’m exceedingly disappointed by the show-runner’s propensity to rewrite and skew certain characters, King Viserys primarily. He was not a weak king, nor was there anything less than relative peace and prosperity under him. Then there’s the desire to gross us out as much as possible with his appearance as he ages: Leprosy(or whatever the hell that is affecting his skin). Jaeherys(sp?) was significantly older than he by their respective deaths, yet King Jaeherys looked very good in his old age. Viserys had problems with obesity and ‘Rheumatism’, but not much else. I’m thoroughly confused as to how they think these gross displays of him help them tell the story?? I’m extremely put off by it!

@@m.williams4971 I like to think the showrunners wanted to show being king was affecting Viserys physically. That he was not some guy who got lucky to be chosen as King. The thing that made me feels so bad about King V is that he made so man concessions for this he cared for. He could have just been like "Your King commands!" and that would have been the end. I like the two characters Daemon and Rhenera but that both abused his kindness. No Rhenera was child, I get it. But she was 17 and still clowning. And still her father, the king, never came down hard on her until she shoved him over the edge. And the same is true with Daemon. They both exposed the king, their bother and father, to peril by their actions. Life is not fair and you can stay in your feelings. But they both constantly stayed in their feelings. It drove me crazy.

"That boy is better than anything that comes out of Alicent's coochie" The way I screamed when you said that 🤣🤣🤣 This episode was so beautiful. The love that Daemon has for Viserys was evident in this episode and it's a shame that Otto was able to drive a wedge between them. Viserys should have made Daemon his Hand. None of the division within their family would occur if Daemon was Hand.
@m.williams4971
@m.williams4971 Жыл бұрын
While I agree Otto’s disdain for Daemon didn’t help Daemon’s peaceful presence on the council and proximal to the king, one must recall Daemon’s own behavior earning him scorn from Viserys: The “Heir for a day” comment, Making (sexual)moves on Rhaenerys, proceeding with a war on the Stepstones unapproved by the king, taking a dragon egg for a potential bastard child, etc., etc. I can appreciate the love existing between the two, but Daemon is one of the relatives who makes it so much more difficult to love unconditionally. I wouldn’t put this all on Otto.

Game of Thrones has made me “emotional” before, of course. But usually it was in the way of grief and sadness. Daemon helping Viserys up the throne was the first time it made me emotional in a LOTR “You bow to no one” kind of way. Amazing scene.

The love between Viceryes and Daemon is so real. That walk to the throne had me in tears. Apparently the crown falling was an accident and Matt Smith just went with it. It was such a beautiful scene. Paddy Considine deserves all the Emmys for this scene. Then when you just take account of everything his character went through, it is all the more poignant. He wondered how he would be remembered and regretted not being tested in battle. He has battled death for 26 years. Viceryes grabbing the catspaw dager was also great Daemon swung the blade but I felt in that moment they were a tag team. Daemon was his hand. It also made me think of Sansa and Arya taking out Little Finger.

He KNOWS what is going to happen upon his death, and uses the dinner after to make his feelings known to all his family, hoping they will work together simply for the love of him. He still has that hope, because that is all he can do. Viserys did one of the most heroic things we have witnessed in either series. Daemon helping him turned tears into straight up SOBS.

Grey Area I will never believe Alison "misunderstood" what Viserys said. She heard what she wanted to hear. He was not in his right mind and she knew it. She's running with that "misunderstanding" because it's convenient to what she wants and it can maybe hold Rhaenyra emotionally hostage of her love for her father. She's gonna tell everyone that was Viserys dying wish but it was obvious the message was not for her and she knows it.
@frankvandorp2059

It's so tiresome how people desperately want to interpret anything Alicent does as negatively as possible, just because she is on the team you decided you're going to hate. As if there is good guys and bad guys in this, as if that's how GRRM writes any of his stories. If you leave your extreme bias aside for a moment and take into account what Alicent actually knew, it makes complete sense for her to interpret it this way. When Viserys starts talking about dreams and the "prince that was promised", Alicent would immediately have thought of what Viserys told her at the bonfire in episode three, how he had a dream that he would have a son bearing the conqueror's crown. That's Alicent's frame of reference here, and what Viserys says fits into that perfectly. At no point did he give any hint to Alicent that he thought she was Rhaenyra, he seemed to respond to and answer her questions. I'm glad they did it this way, the conflict is much more interesting if both sides genuinely believe they're doing the will of Viserys and they're in the right. She’s choosing to believe that Viserys is talking about the “prophetic” dream that he told her about seeing his son sitting on the Iron Throne, uniting the Realm. And she’s grasping on to that despite everything as she believes this provides a way to keep her children safe. Its not really I’ll intent on her part. Just that she had the wrong context to go by and has been conditioned by her father to only see things related to the succession as being a matter over the lives of her children.
@frankvandorp2059
@frankvandorp2059 Жыл бұрын
@@eds1942 The whole "conditioning by her father" element is greatly exaggerated. She went against the wishes of her father for years on end by supporting Rhaenyra's claim and trying to help her find a good match. It was only after Rhaenyra lied to her and betrayed her trust that Alicent started to turn against her. And at that point, Otto was already fired and sent to Oldtown, so for the largest part of Alicent's life where she opposed Rhaenyra, Otto was not even present.

This episode was INCREDIBLE! Viserys's final words to me seemed to hint at what's coming up in ASOIAF. He says to Alicent that he believes the prophecy of the PTWP and he believes RHAENYRA is the PTWP. Or at least he thinks she needs to be Queen for the prophecy to be fulfilled (which is true, the current Targaryens all descend from her line). But what if Viserys has seen a vision of a Targaryen Queen, bold and strong and fighting in the Long Night -- and he thinks it looks like Rhaenyra, so it must be her. After all, how likely are the Targaryens really to have another female ruler in the near future? It can only be Rhaenyra. BUT what if it's DANY? What if he saw Dany and thought it was Rhaenyra? This also reminds me of Viserys's other vision in EP1, where he dreamt of a son born with a crown on his head who would be the PTWP, and thought it was his son Baelon. And yet, the only Targaryen king we know to have been 'born with a crown on his head' (i.e. born already a king) is JON, who was born after his father, grandfather, and older brother (presumably) had died, thus making him next in line to be King. Hence the Kingsguards staying to protect Lyanna and unborn Jon instead of going into battle -- they were sworn to protect the king, and knew this unborn baby was about to become the next one. Jon is the PTWP in this vision of Viserys's, Dany is in the other. Which makes sense with the idea that there isn't only one PTWP.

*MATT* *SMITH* *HAS* *"IT"* I know SeanTankTop, Jody's Corner, and Akasan have always been skeptics of this Daemon character but there is a reason why he is GRRM's favorite Targaryen and he's written a lot of them. Years before HOT D was aired, I would read how popular Daemon was among book readers. Came from both genders. A lot of females read this stuff and aren't into Twilight and Harry Potter or at least not anymore for some. I'd read how Daemon was such a BADASS Targaryen and how they couldn't wait to see him in TV form. Matt Smith crushed this role the moment we first see him in Ep 1. Daemon pulls the most gravity in EVERY scene. It's like even if he's leaning in the background, you want to know what he's doing? What's he thinking? How he's reacting? If he doesn't appear for 30 minutes into the episode, you start to ask, Where's Daemon? Where's Daemon? This is pure charisma, people. Listen, I thought Ewan Mitchell would steal scenes in this episode but I didn't see it at all. Aemond looks cool but it's not the level of charisma that Daemon carries. Matt Smith still pulls the most eyes and ears to him. We all hang onto his every word and Daemon is a man of very few words. But when he says something, it can hit you as hard and as fast as Dark Sister did through Vaemond's neck. Daemon is THE ONE. This is why in every comment section, guys and gals will say, I love Daemon! I love Matt Smith! I will defend all of Daemon's crimes! It's insanity. But he's a character who hasn't let me down. Without Daemon, I'm not sure I would continue to watch this show. GRRM and the book readers were right all along. We are starting to get it. Daemon truly is the main reason to watch. The GOAT. "He can keep his tongue." Can see the tongue attached to the neck while Daemon wipes off Dark Sister and then directly looks at Aemond. You can even see Aemond flinch the moment Daemon played Fruit Ninja with Vaemond's head. I know not everyone likes Daemon and that's fine. People want to be contrarian or like the boy scouts. And Daemon is written as a grey character so he's going to be divisive. But even the haters have to admit Daemon still pulls the most attention over any other character in this show. He has "IT". He has je ne sais quo.

Yes!! I was just telling a friend who thought Alicent genuinely misunderstood that nah; Alicent heard what she wanted to hear from Viserys to give herself a pass for the moves she wants to make (and had been making for a decade + at that point). Usurping Rhaenyra was going to be significantly harder after Viserys' last stand, so Alicent needed an excuse and found one. Now, like any priggish hypocrite, she can pat herself on the back and tell herself anything she does is justified because it's for "the greater good" and honors Viserys' last wish. It's awfully convenient that Alicent suddenly starts putting weight into Targaryen beliefs and customs she'd deemed "queer" all her life as opposed to interpreting Viserys' musings as nonsensical, excited utterances of a dying man like Sam did w/Maester Aemon in AFFC. But hey, maybe they aren't so queer when they can be used to justify a war one's been scheming to have to advance their house and church's agenda. It's starting to feel like the show is working overtime to paint her as more innocent in this than she actually is. That part of the episode lost me too.

I'm just confused as to what people think Alicent was _supposed_ to think when she heard his last words. Of course she's going to believe he means _her_ Aegon. She doesn't know about the prophecy, and she's not going to think Viserys meant Rhaenyra's fourth child, Aegon. She's definitely going to think he meant her son. Having said that, Aegon the Elder would be a shit king, and Alicent knows it. Go Jace!

"He neglected putting any effort into those children ... Viserys doesn’t hate his children, he just doesn’t love them the way he loves Rhaenyra. Because Rhaenyra’s mom Aemma is the love of King Viserys’ life" - Paddy Considine Even I figured that out pretty quickly. Viserys always saw Alicent and the children he helped conceive with her as outsiders. They were both forced into this loveless marriage. I don't think Alicent ever loved Viserys and only acted as a broodmare and caretaker. This is why their children got messed up in the head growing up while Daemyra's children are far more behaved and their parents weren't always there either. With all that said, how can Alicent confuse what Viserys was telling her at the end? Isn't she aware Viserys is drinking the milk of the poppy and can't think straight? That's why she made decisions on the throne for him. Isn't she aware Rhaenyra also has a son named Aegon? Alicent wants to disown her Aegon. Now she believes her rapist boy is going to unite the Seven Kingdoms? 🤣

That scene with Alicent and Viserys on his death bed reminded me of Ned and Robert when Ned has Robert sign a paper on his deathbed without actually knowing what the paper said. Makes me think Aegon IV was probably in a similar situation on his deathbed as well and probably was NOT trying to legitimize all of his bastard children. I don’t know who was with Aegon IV when he died, but they probably coerced him into the whole legitimizing thing.

I cried twice, once then and again at dinner during his speech. That poor beaten up man only wanted his family to love each other. He did it for Rhaenyra his daughter who he loves because he knew she needed the support. It was the most heroic act befitting a king 😭 Daemon crowning him killed me too ok cried three times 😭 This was a perfect episode and you’re right, Aemond is not Daemon. I love Daemon, he’s gray but when it counts he’s good and got boss swagger. Matt Smith steals every scene he’s in and that’s what you need playing Daemon. Aemond peaked my interest and does demand attention so I’ll be watching. Alicent and Otto are bad news. She knew what she was doing even if she hides it from herself. She is Ottos daughter through and through and Otto is evil. I’m a huge fan of Lord Beesbury! Love that man in Outlander as well. He played a similar noble man. Aemond is definitely not a knock off of Daemon, yes aemond was definitely impressed when Daemond beheaded Vaemond. Both of them have similarities, they both are second sons in the family, more worthy, capable than their brothers, and are good warriors. However, Aemond in the show is more dutiful. In episode 7, during Laena’s funeral, Aegon is annoyed that he has to marry his sister Halaena but Aemond on the other hand knows how important this marriage would be for their side, which is why he says if he were the one betrothed, he would fulfil his duty. Aemond’s hatred for team black started when his mother would obviously brainwash the kids and he was also a bullied child without a dragon. Dragon’s are a symbol of power and it definitely hurt his ego that if Jacerys being a b*stard could have his dragon, why didn’t he have one? Plus imagine having your eye taken out by a cousin/nephew, would you even wish for their goodwill? Also, let me clarify, I’m not team green 😭
