Could I make a suggestion? On the aluminum bar that the knife rests on. I think it would be great if there was a way to adjust the height from the top of the jig so you could even grind a narrow knife blade, and perhaps even scissors. Some kind of slots in that plate where it could ne slid up and down, and then tightened in place. Some kind of threaded stud welded or fastened in place on the narrow knife rest that insert into those slots, and a wing nut on the back to tighten it up once you have it in place.

Quick tip on the hole tapping... Get some kind of lube in there. There's aluminum-specific tapping fluid, but even a light 3-in-1 type of oil will do. Makes the process much smoother, and less likely to break a tap. Also, in addition to the drill press clamps and/or vise another commenter suggested, a really good safety practice is removing jewelry (noticed you wearing your ring and watch). I've seen pictures of what can happen when something like that gets caught in a machine. Even small machines can do some real damage.

Why not cut a couple channels for the "blade rest" bolts to ride in to make the rest height adjustable? It would also help when make folder blades as well. *side note* Using something like Tap Magic can be beneficial when, get this..., tapping holes. (I know, who would have thought, right?) Sure is a nice looking jig though, that's for sure!

Would there be any benefit to adding some inset magnets to hold the knife against the jig? I don't have one of those fancy grinders yet, so I don't really know. Just curious.
@GrazMakes
@GrazMakes 6 жыл бұрын
I totally forgot to show me using the thing in the video. I just use a cheap harbor freight clamp to hold down the blade to the jig. It doubles as a handle to grab on to that won't get too hot when grinding.

Yes and no, mostly no - and I speak from (related) experience. Briefly: magnets strong enough to hold the knife to the jig, against the downward forces of the belt, ALSO will want to hold the knife through the belt to the steel of the platen -behind- the belt. Also, the magnets you'd need are quite large surface area and tricky to inset in that thin aluminum - you'd need to use like a 1-5/8" Forstner bit - and need to be screwed in (or epoxied) to keep them from just pulling out by the steel. This is a pretty tricky operation. (There are other ways to do it but other disadvantages there too.) So, you COULD - but short answer (a) it's not easy and (b) not worth it.

Graz, I'll save you the trouble of doing a drawing. Just send it to me. I'll do a test run when my grinder gets here in the next week.

Anyway you can tell us the measurements of where you drilled? The pdf only shows the two pieces and the holes but not the actual measurements. Thanks!
@GrazMakes
@GrazMakes 5 жыл бұрын
hey zach, are you referring to the size of the tapped hole?
@zachdove4380
@zachdove4380 5 жыл бұрын
No I mean the ‘pre measured’ holes you talk about that you punch before you drill. In the PDF I don’t see where it gives those measurements. Hope that makes sense
@GrazMakes
@GrazMakes 5 жыл бұрын
hmmm, not totally sure what you mean. the dots on the blueprints is where you punch, as far as the size of the drill, its usually included with the tap which I say the size in the video. hope that helps!

He is talking about how there are no measurements for the layout of those holes. You have dots on your blueprint, but no measurements for how to layout for those holes

Drill press clamps; drill press vise. Get them. Use them. The remaining skin on your fingers, knuckles and palm will thank you. Even drilling little holes like that can catch and spin those jagged bits of metal arounds at frightening speed. Cool build, otherwise
