Bel-Ray Waterproof Grease: amzn.to/2iBXRNz
Acid Brush: amzn.to/2wUpI0F
The linkage bearings receive the most wear out of all the bearings on a bike. It is critical that you keep them greased!

My dad showed me how to repack needle bearings Use an extendable magnet to pull the needles out (keeps you from dropping them) and put them in a spray paint can lid and wash with brake clean. Then dry them. Wash the race out with brake clean as well. When everything is clean, smear a healthy layer of grease in all the way around, then start packing the needles back in. The grease will easily hold them. I like this method because you have 100% new grease. And can be sure there’s no moisture or grit in it

I watched a few other videos that describe this process but yours is one of the best. I didn't realize that brand new bikes do not come with any grease in the linkage (or any other bearings) and this is something that should absolutely be done when you get a new bike home. After watching your video, I decided to grease my linkage bearings again. The manual says every 7.5 hours . That's two weeks for me so I 'm not doing it that soon. However, it shows how important this maintenance is, along with cleaning the air filter and changing the oil/filter. Since I've done it before, it was actually easy to do and took less than thirty minutes, which includes almost ten minutes looking up the torque specifications for the nuts Thanks!

It is insane how little grease new bikes come with. Whenever I buy a new bike it immediately comes apart to grease every bearing. 15 hours is what I go by and never had one issue with bearings wearing. Thanks for checking out the video!

Last year I bought a 2001 rm250 2 stroke and just did some work on it the other day, greased kickstart pivot point, lubed throttle cable, lubed and tightened chain. I was watching most overlooked bike maintenance it said linkage greasing. Searched it up and found you had a video on it. I was stoked. Also I’m loving the cr250 build. Keep strong 💪👍 great work again!!!!!!

I like all your videos, on the torqueing of the suspension bolts, you can torque those that have bearings on or off the stand. With rubber bushings though, those need to be torqued at ride height with the weight it will be ran at. If they are torqued on a lift or stand when at weight they will be under pressure wanting to be back where they were torqued at and will tear out quickly.

One thing ive noticed about every mx bike ive bought since 1980... 67. They never come properly grease. The headset bearings get about a Q-tip amount of grease and the rest of the pivots and bearings are near dry. If you want amazing water proof grease try castrol pyroplex blue. If you get it on your hands water makes it stick more. Gas or wd40 to help clean your hands... lol good stuff

Fantastic camera and editing work. Your videos have no doubt inspired me to tear apart my filthy WR426 sumo this winter. Since I won't have access to a pressure washer when its 20 degrees outside, how do you suggest I go about cleaning each piece? We've got a solvent tank but that's not ideal for most parts I wouldn't think.
@CameronNiemela
@CameronNiemela 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks man! Solvent tanks actually work great for cleaning parts. Really depends on what chemicals and brushes you are using. Straight up solvent will clean amazing, but is nasty to work with. A heated water based degreaser is what I use.

The bolt necessarily doesn't need greasing, however the bearing does. They're spherical bearings and are hard to get grease in them.

I have a question, My way of cleaning and greasing the linkage bearings is to get all the needles out, clean the whole bearing cage (and needles) entirely, then greas everything and put it back together. But is it bad to take all the needles out? because I don't see any reason why it should. but I never see anyone do it the way I do haha also, great videos man!
@CameronNiemela
@CameronNiemela 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Nothing wrong at all with removing all the needles, just takes much longer having to assemble all the needles back together. If that's what you prefer then keep doing it that way. When I come across linkage that is dry and needs a good cleaning I'll take all the needles out.
