Oh don't worry, I'm quite sure the subtitles do not omit any juicy part and everyone in the world understands the hand gesture "better cut it now" and what it means when people look away or cover they eyes.

Any European gets this part just fine. One of my favorite parts. By dancing with him later in the movie she'd makes peace with him, because she knows he's telling the truth.

It absolutely deserved best picture and best original screenplay too other than just best foreign film. The screenplay in this movie is so filled with life and its so humbling.

Yes, for me as well, I'm not sure if it's sentimental, but this is my favourite scene in my favourite movie, because this is what it's all about. Not just the movie, but life. Let go of the pretentiousness, the ego, the stories you tell yourself in order to create your own pedestal on which you feel safe, let go of all that others have convinced you to strive for and accept that there is nothing, nothing but our common humanity, our short shared time on this planet, amongst those who are equally miraculously present and differ to such degrees that their lives may create wonder in our mind and our commonality creates a sense of compassion and understanding, for at the end of it there is nothing that will comfort us or rescue us or change the final outcome, but we are left with nothing but for our memories and emotions. So why not make them pleasant and share them with those who are in need of them, who can enrich them, who will color them beyond your imagination, for otherwise they will remain as mere thoughts and dreams without voice.

I don't have the ability to write as you did above but I do agree about the beauty of this scene. Beauty along with melancholy. For me , these two adjectives describes the movie. This movie is the number 5 in my top five along with 1-Casablanca, 2-to be or not to be,3-How Green Was My Valley,4 Only angels have wings,5 Blade runner ( it used to be my fifth )

@@Mikelori_ cazzata colossale. Primo, gli americani (come i francesi) preferiscono i sottotitoli al doppiaggio che potrebbe travisare il senso. Secondo, un produttore americano una volta disse che se in America i film stranieri venissero doppiati, Hollywood crollerebbe.

I would say The Great Beauty has plenty of action, complex narratives and themes, and an abundance of very well-developed side characters with lives of their own, not just plot devices used to make a point. The film has a lot of feeling , it is not made just for entertainment and this offends a large portion of movie goers that view cinema as purely a distraction from day-to-day life. This is why a lot of mind-numbing shows and reality TV are shockingly popular, I believe - they provide a total escape from anything that could threatened the mind into producing too many thoughts, stress, anxiety, dillemas, anger. This is also the reason a lot of soapy dramas are shallow, yet extremely popular, so as not to emotionally affect the viewer. These people could never tolerate a film like The Great Beauty, it is too demanding, and they are cut from the same cloth as the readers of 'easy books' and the mainstream pop music fanatics.

Yeah for real. It's crazy how the director actually not only created a very deep and beautiful movie, but also predicted the future in a very exact way. Probably, Sorrentino is the deepest and the most insightful director in the world right now, in my opinion at least.

Yes, but there is a lot more that inevitably ends up lost in translation, from the very beginning when Stefania says “appena scoprono di avere due neuroni” and the subtitles go “when they realize they’re smart”. The meaning is there but there’s nothing of the contempt shown in her saying “they find out they have a couple of brain cells”.

@@faustomarchesi4036 Sorrentino è molto famoso all'estero, soprattutto in America. Esistono americani che si dilettano con la lingua italiana e guardano i film non doppiati, o i video su youtube. È difficile capire se non sei madrelingua italiana a maggior ragione se è presente un accento.

This isn't particularly clear.... Anyway. Talking about a wealthy, arrived, old elite (shown in the movie)... who's not gonna have anything to lose... In this movie is shown what could be defined the haute bourgeois way to self-public-counscensce. A free willing massacre within your own magic circle (motivated by boredom, lack of satisfactions, frailties, absence of progress expectations, and too many time spent in the same place with the same deceiving people). The main character can't stand that kind of life no more. The woman equally can't stand it, but she won't admit it. She still have some faith that putting some maquillage and tricks over her scary existential situation she can appear more true, trustworthy, lovable, but this is samsara. Every human sitting there knows very well to be participating to a meeting of doomed undead.

Bravo, sei riuscito ad esprimere un concetto che io avrei descritto con almeno 7-8 parolacce ed insulti a quei cancheri che ci stanno intossicando l'esistenza.
