Great Blue Herons hunting gophers, Autumn compilation

It has been hard to get a video of an actual capture of a gopher so I decided it was time for a seasonal compilation. I have witnessed a few misses but so far the gophers have been very lucky or very elusive.

You’re welcome and I am very happy you enjoyed the video. This particular heron was a favorite of mine. I miss her like she was a pet. I’ve looked a lot lately but I haven’t had much luck. I do miss following a heron as it hunts. I did for a short time yesterday but there it is tough for the herons to find gophers this year. It’s tough for me anyway to find them.

You’re welcome. I have loved birds of prey since I was young. I’ve learned in the last couple years what great predators herons can be. It has been a challenge in the last few weeks but I’ll keep trying

Its amazing to me that pretty much the same method they use to capture fish works on small terrestrial prey as well. It certainly pays to be a generalist.

Yeah they are really good at fish or crayfish or gophers or lizards or just about anything. They can spear a big fish in the same way they catch gophers or delicately grab a minnow in the same way they might catch an insect or an earthworm.
