Gopal Mukherjee is said to have led the Hindu resistance of 1946 in Kolkata. However, he is also viewed as communal and a rioter, historically. In a conversation with Columnist Deep Halder, Mukherjee's grandson, Santanu delves into the lesser known aspects of his grandfather's life and why he now remains forgotten in history. Gopal Mukherjee had meat shops in the College Street and Ganja Park at Bhawanipore in Kolkata. His uncle Anukul Chandra Mukhopadhyay masterminded the Rodda Company Arms robbery in 1919, which were distributed among revolutionaries in Bengal. So by virtue of belonging to Anukul Chandra 's extended family at Malanga lane he grew up among revolutionaries and associates.

Hussain Suhravardy, who was behind the riots, was not a Bengali but of Iranian origin. Jinnah gave the call for direct action but Muslim League rarely won seats in Bengal or Punjab. If you dig deep, you'll find history is far more complicated than what we have been taught.

Jogen Mondal was not at all a Communist Party Member. He had his own party consisting of NamaSudras of East Bengal and collaborated with Muslim League for Pakistan. But after creation of Pakistan he had to flee to India leaving behind his followers in that country.

Came to know about this legend Gopal patha just 1 week back only.. my secular thoughts faded already after knowing the truth about pseudo seculars.... nowadays my hindutva ideology is growing stronger and stronger.... but kolkata people even after so much sufferings, bring Muslim appeasement parties in power.... similar to dmk in our Tamilnadu.... bjp IA also not at all a noble party..... politician ll be made to perish by our own people if they stay noble like Tamilnadu people.... so elect a lesser corrupt party like BJP

@swagatabhaumik978 তিতুমীর সাম্প্রদায়িক ছিল এটা কোন বইতে পেয়েছেন আপনি ? সাম্প্রদায়িক জমিদার কৃষ্ণচন্দ্র রায় ছিল যে গরীব হিন্দুদের পাশাপাশি মুসলিমদের দাড়ির ওপর আড়াই টাকা ট্যাক্স চাপিয়েছিল, তিতুমীর এবং তাঁর বোনাই গোলাম মাসুম দুজন মিলে এই আন্দোলনের নেতৃত্ব দিয়েছিল, বিখ্যাত বাঁশের কেল্লা হিন্দু-মুসলিম উভয়ের সাহায্য সহযোগিতা নিয়েই গড়ে উঠেছিল, ইংরেজদের পা চাটা ওই সমস্ত জমিদারদের তাবেদারি সে করতে চাই নি, কিন্তু দুঃখজনক হলেও আপনাদের মত তৎকালীন শহরের শিক্ষিত চশমা পরা বাঙালিরাই এই আন্দোলনের বিরোধিতা করেছিল এবং পুরোপুরি ইংরেজদের সহযোগিতা করেছিল, আরব থেকে হজ করে এসে মুসলিম সমাজে তিতুমীর বা মীর নিসার আলী যে সংস্কারের কাজ করেছিল সেটা মুসলিম সমাজের মধ্যেই সীমাবদ্ধ ছিল তাকে হিন্দু সমাজের উপর কোনভাবেই চাপিয়ে দেন নি, মুসলিম সমাজকে জাগানোর কাজ করেছিলেন যেটা আপনাদের মধ্যে রামমোহন রায়, শ্রীরামকৃষ্ণ পরমহংস,সারদা দেবী, স্বামী বিবেকানন্দ,ঋষি অরবিন্দ,ঠাকুর অনুকূল চন্দ্র,বাবা লোকনাথ করেছিলেন সেটাই মুসলিম সমাজে পরবর্তীকালে ফুরফুরা শরীফের হুজুররা করেছিলেন তাদের মধ্যে দাদা হুজুর পীর কিবলা আবু বকর সিদ্দিকী (রহমাতুল্লাহ আলাইহি) অন্যতম, সেটাই তফসিলি ও মতুয়া সমাজের প্রতিনিধি হয়ে গুরুচাঁদ ঠাকুর এবং হরিচাঁদ ঠাকুর সমাজ সংস্কারের কাজ করেছিলেন সেই সমাজের জন্য বিভিন্ন স্কুল এবং প্রতিষ্ঠান গড়ে তোলার মাধ্যমে, কারণ তখন উচ্চ বর্ণের দ্বারা নির্মিত প্রতিষ্ঠানগুলোতে তপশিলি মুসলিম এবং অ্যাংলোদের দাখিলের কোনো সুযোগ ছিল না, ফলে এই সমস্ত সমাজের নিজের নিজের সমাজ সংস্কারক এবং শিক্ষাপ্রতিষ্ঠান গড়ে তুলতে হয়েছিল, তিতুমীরকে যদি সাম্প্রদায়িক বলেন তাহলে সেই হিসাবে সিধু-কানহুকেও সাম্প্রদায়িক বলতে হয়, কারণ ইংরেজদের হারিয়ে তারা নিশ্চয়ই কোনো গণতান্ত্রিক রাষ্ট্র গঠন করতো না, তারা তাদের বন-জঙ্গল এলাকা নিয়েই নিজের রাজত্ব কায়েম করতো, আবার অন্যদিকে বিচার করতে গেলে রামকৃষ্ণ পরমহংসদেব, সারদা দেবী এবং স্বামী বিবেকানন্দ কেও তাহলে সাম্প্রদায়িক বলতে হয় কারণ তারা একটি নির্দিষ্ট ধর্মীয় সম্প্রদায়কেই জাগিয়ে তোলার কাজ করেছিলেন, কিন্তু আমরা মুসলিমরা কখনোই তা মনে করি না, আপনাদের সমাজকে এবং মতুয়া সমাজকে যেমন কিছু ধর্মীয় এবং সমাজ সংস্কারক নেতৃত্ব দিয়েছে, তেমনি আমাদের সমাজকেও কিছু ধর্মীয় এবং সামাজিক সংস্কারক ব্যক্তি তৎকালীন সময়ে নেতৃত্ব দিয়েছিল,

Hindu population of undivided Bengal before partition was nearly 48%. Still the Muslims claimed ownership of the whole of Bengal and tried to own it. The ugly character of Muslim thugs had rightly been exposed by their unjust barbaric actions on the soil of Calcutta in August 1946 to organise a Hindu cleansing. The most unfortunate part is that we still eulogise some of the main conspirators of the brutal killings like Surawardy, Mujibur Rahaman in Kolkata even in 2023. Thanks to our commitment to secularism.

At that time of Direct Action Gopal Patha and his associates appeared as great savior of the helpless Hindus, and forgotten thereafter. How many Kolkatans thank him that he saved Kolkata. This is because Gopal Mukherjee did not belong to any political party, whose leaders are worshipped by the Bengali Hindus.
