New York City's finest. LA's new centurions. Even Mayberry's, Sheriff Andy have relied on one common tool, the Police Car. It is the most often used weapon in an officer's crime fighting arsenal.
More than the gun. More than the billy club. The Police Car is the one tool that continually makes the difference in the struggle against crime.
While it's taken for granted today, the development of the Police Car has been a constant race to stay ahead of the technology and hardware of the crooks.
After the first organized municipal police department was created by Sir Robert Peel in England, in the early part of the 19th century, it was clear that a means of deploying police to trouble spots was needed. Initially, carts and horses served this purpose but as cities grew crime festered and criminals found new ways to elude the grasp of the law.
With the invention of the automobile a means was at hand that would allow the police to keep up with fleeing suspects and provide security and protection to wider areas.
But the crooks and gangsters of the early part of the 20th century were one technological step ahead of the law. Their large, expensive sedans could easily outrun a local sheriff's car. The police were further hampered by the lack of a radio network that would help them coordinate a response to crime throughout a state or across state lines. Gangster, bootleggers and bank robbers were crisscrossing the country and preying on local communities.
Finally, in the 1930's two things happened that would start to turn the tide. Henry Ford introduced a new V8 powered police cruiser and two-way radios were developed that would allow commanders to talk to their patrol officers. With these tools in hand police agencies set out to take back control.
The crooks began to fall. Dillinger, Pretty Boy Floyd, Ma Barker and the most notorious, Bonnie and Clyde were rounded up or dispatched. Clyde had even written Henry Ford to thank him for inventing the V8. Clyde said, he always stole one when possible. Unfortunately for Clyde, the police finally had more firepower and more horsepower. He and Bonnie were gunned down at a police road block.
As the country continued to grow the Police car was pushed to keep up. Newer and bigger engines. Better brakes. Better handling. More room for more equipment. Computers, on-board cameras for recording chases and arrests. All this has turned the modern day Police cruiser into a fortress, command center and shield on wheels.
What will be the next step for the Police car is unclear. Tests are underway to find the right answer for the problems of the 21st century. Will it be a four-wheel drive all terrain vehicle? Will it be a sleek racer? Some departments are even experimenting with a combination of bicycles and vans. Whatever the solution, the Police Car will continue to play a central role in keeping crime contained and the streets safe for all of us.

I've watched several of these videos and enjoyed all of them. Some are more informative than others and some sound like manufacturer promo films, but they are still enjoyable.

Ask any old time cop what his or her favorite cop car is - 9 out of 10 will answer the 1969 Dodge Polara. 440 c.i. V-8 making 375 hp, super duty suspension, and monster brakes….what’s not to love?

i had a long standing love affair with full size american police package cars. The Caprice was my favorite. In the late 90's i purchased a 1989 caprice from a local auto auction. 264 k miles on it $400.00 ran fine as is - for a while. I got the records of the car due to it being a fairly local car. Rear end, transmission, and engine block - a short block. Were all new parts 27 k miles ago. Whomever did the maintenance for Newton Mass police dept was a genius. What was done was to allow the torque converter to lock up in 2nd 3rd and 4th gear with a lock out switch. To allow it to lock up in every gear - or not. That made it a scary fast car. I put Vortech cyl heads on the engine, a slightly better cam and a programmable chip in the computer - such as it as. Stiff poly bushings for the body and front end . progressive dual coils all around - 2 inch drop with adjustable Koni shocks all around. It would bottom but you had to try hard to do it. Very beefy tubular A frames and larger wilwood front brake rotors and 4 piston calipers. For not a lot of money i got an amazing car in return. Enough torque to shred the tires to the rims, Enough power to bury the speedo at 135 mph and still pull hard from there. Run 100 mph on the highway all day long - NO problems at all. I dropped the car 2 inches..as a result you could flick the car into a right angle turn onto a side street at 40 mph and drift into the turn tires screaming, bang 2 gears and be headed to 100 in a few seconds. Holy crap was that car fun !! Oh how i loved that thing. Made more than a few friends leave a nice brown spot thrashing it around town. But alas being in a small town i was well known, and getting away with having a little fun was tough at best. I got 5 years of fun out of it and sold it for 10 k before i ended up in jail. I had a very hard time behaving in that car. I could be good for about a month or so until i just had to open it up a bit.....one of those times i was caught. It was made clear to me - sell the car away from here or lose my ability to drive for several years and do some jail time to boot. The car went. And i paid stiff fines. Local PD loved my new car.....1982 toyota corolla 4 sp. I bent as many rules and laws as i could get away with for a very long time - i was very lucky. Anyone like me reading this take note : it only lasts so long.

You are very polite...We do....Racetracks. BUT you must join a club such as SCCA or COM etc. That is how i got my start, not cheap either. Once you do learn how to handle a car at speed, it's rather intoxicating. Road Racing - left AND right turns...Not nascar or 1/4 mile drag. And yes you can drift a front drive car, sort of it's a lot harder. Thanks for responding - sorry i was sooo long winded . You have a great channel, there are some things here you will not find elsewhere well done !

I absolutely love the Chrysler "M" bodies. 1980-1989 Plymouth Gran Furys and Dodge Diplomats. Not fast, but that's ok, cops had the Motorola. Those cars really were the only cars that were so official looking to me and scared the bejesus out of me. So bad ass. Anyway, had to have one. 87 Gran Fury 318, deepest blue, dog dish hubcaps on black steelies undercover from the 41st, Fort Apache in the Bronx. I get so many thumbs ups it's insane. Anyway, great channel

20:05 Revenue generation has become very controversial in today's times. Here in MO, we were one of the first states that set limits on how much a city can rely on tickets as a source of income. Revenue generation through traffic enforcement does absolutely nothing to improve safety and gives officers incentive to harass otherwise law abiding people.

It's DAMP, dang it! Shock absorbers DAMP the suspension movement. If you want to dampen something, use a spray bottle. Yeah, I'm nit-picking, but in any discussion regarding automobiles, this common mistake could indicate some difficulty with the facts, and, it just plain annoys me. Other than that, a typical KR production. Good stuff.

These videos are published 2017 but do not progress beyond 2005? And the commentator has an English accent so why is it so American focused? Policing around the world has many facets and not just American.

We produced this series in 2005 and it was distributed all over the world in many languages. We chose the former BBC correspondent as the narrator to give it more appeal in the international marketplace. We focused on the US police cars because that what was readily available to us and given our budget at the time that was all we could do.

The Dodge Charger is the most unreliable piece of junk, even with the police package. And police agencies all over the world are finding this out the hard way. And many of them are going back to Ford. I've even seen some of them being forced to pull back old Crown Vic out of retirement because their Chargers are out of service most of the time. The best police car of all time : Ford Crown Victoria P71. Period.
@AcuraLvR82

Only problem Crown Vics are terribly slow and handle like complete crap. Most modern 4cylinder cars, especially Hondas with just a few mods can outrun them.
