If you ever want to start an argument among car lovers, ask a group to define a sports car. Like beauty, it is in the eye or mind of the beholder.
While they may not agree about what constitutes a "true" sports car they'll all concede that in a little over one-hundred years these fabulous machines have gone from crude to sublime. Whatever they are, they are a breed apart.
This fast paced, tire squealing, high octane program will race to discover the essence of the sports car as we take a look at the origins of the world's most beguiling examples. We'll travel back to the beginnings of the automotive adventure and see the cars that royalty raced. We'll encounter princes, kings, dukes and wealthy commoners whose auto tastes set the tone for the first sports cars and see how national differences created some of the world's most exciting autos. We’ll take some of these fabulous machines out for a drive while we try to discover the essence of a sports car.

you guys are good at these. a word wrong or fact once in a while but mostly bang on..,very impressed..i just watched your whole playlist...please do one on C.U.V.'s ranchero's elcamino's etc.

the G-body $16,000, 1986 buick grand national made ferrari, lamborghini and all other high dollar sports cars look slow at the drag strip and all acceleration tests.. ...duntov 's favorite car was the stingray, 1963-1967.

my best fastest cars were fiat twin cam cars,like the 1600 sport coupe and convertibles, rust was an issue, but dual webers, and after market exhausts made around 120 hp.

indeed the mazda mx5 killed the 2nd gen lotus elan! mazda also lost money on every sale!

It's still chugging along. Saw the new MX 5 model last week at the LA Auto Show. Looks great. And the Alfa version is sweet. They do a great job with SCCA racing and with giving young engineers a showcase to work on fun projects that gets them in front of potential employers. I do like the organization.

The Mazda MX-5 is the perfect roadster - all the fun of a classic British roadster, with none of the reliability problems and much more interior room !

Not entirely true, the elan was a good seller for lotus but the overall r and d for the elan as well as issues with development put the elan at a much higher price point and with a lot less return per car than they would have liked. Overall the elan is the better car but for the money the mx5 was almost as good. Basically even without the introduction of the mx5, the elan was doomed to be a financial disaster for lotus. This makes people assume the car was bad which it wasn't, it got amazing reviews.

I have a 1999 Miata...and a 1986 Turbo Porsche 944. while the 951 is for sure faster. the Miata is truly more fun to drive.
