I would not be able to say the AMX wasn't a success. It was short lived but had a pretty wide popularity with those that liked something a little different. They also made the best police car on the planet that only one car in it's run almost outran and that was the 1970 Pontiac Judge. Still people till this day love making little alternative pony cars out of them and anyone who has ever seen one will recognize it a mile down the street and know it by name. It was short lived but in it's short run I would call the AMX one of the most successful cars on the market .

The Tucker's engine was a joke. It was a WW2 Franklin air cooled engine, designed for use as a helicopter engine in the Bell 47. It was useless installed in an engine bay. So then Preston's son converted it to water cooling, but the engine sounded...like a Bell 47 chopper. It was gawd awful bad. Another KZfaqr ranked the Tucker/Franklin engine as the #3 worst i/c engine ever made...who am I to argue? The last Tucker sold at auction didn't even run (ever!)

The AMC was a good looking car. Matchbox made a stiffly sprung green one with a hood scoop lol. The Delorean had a pos engine in it. It was really a very terrible motor that one. Try changing the injector seals, water pump, spark plugs or distributor cap on those motors and you'll know EXACTLY what I'm talking about. In addition they blew head gaskets with monotonous frequency, they had wet sleeves that leaked water, the blocks suffered porosity issues causing internal and external coolant leaks and the EGR system coated the entire intake system with an oily muddy substance that caused the EGR valve to stick open causing the motor to not idle properly; the cure being to spend full 2 days taking the intake manifold off and you just knew it was going to come back in a few weeks with the same problem! - like I said a very terrible engine. On top of that they were underwhelming in the power department. They were one of those engines that may have been better if you drove them long distances every day but for stop start driving they were didn't work. A worse engine is hard to imagine and as you can see I know a bit about them.

The first car reminds me of a guy where I worked had a Mustang with no weight in the back, every time he took off he squealed the tires. A guy in my neighborhood had an AMX Javelin. When the crappy boat anchor AMC motor threw the towel and he couldn’t find another good one we talked him into changing to small block Chevy . He put in 350 Chevy with turbo trans and then he had trouble keeping it on the road. ( it looks like one in video has Chevy motor ) I knew a guy that worked for AMC and he told us about some cars that didn’t make it, one was a car he said looked better than AMX but it couldn’t pass speed tests. He said over 100 mph it would try to fly.

The first car has been marketed here in Germany as Opel GT. That alone was a mistake, they should have named it Lotus. But it was equipped with a totally unmatching 2.2 l rev - unwilling 4 - cyl. from a limousine, nasty gearbox and impractical chassis design that almost no customer was willing to pay the price much higher than that from the MX 5. It also suffered from reliability problems and crappy workmanship so it had no chance against its well made rival what was equipped with the rev - happy 1,6 twin cam from the 323 GT and a very crisp 5 speed manual.

Where was the Studebaker Avanti? Yeah, it had teething pains, but Studebaker got them worked out about the time the Board of Directors forced Sherwood Egbert out and pulled the plug on the South Bend plant. Note also that the regular production R2 supercharged Studebaker 289 with just a bit of tuning set 15 records at Bonneville in the unlimited displacement class.

Probably not listed because the Avanti outlived Studebaker and was in production for decades. R&T actually preferred the later Corvette powered Avanti because the lighter weight engine improved handling. Also, the Bonneville car used the R3 engine, which was bored out to 304 cu and, essentially hand built. You could order them from your Studebaker dealer, but they were so pricey I think only four were ever built.

The Prowler had the same engine as the 300 M. What it really needed was a stick shift. At the time Chrysler wasn't putting V8's into any of it's cars. So it would have had to either use a Viper chassis or be engineered from whole cloth, either of which would have greatly increased it's price.

The Tucker 48 was never anything but a gimmick. Aside from Preston Tucker's lack of sufficient financial resources to make a go of it; remember, Henry J. Kaiser, with all the resources of his construction and shipyard cash on hand almost went broke when he continued building cars after the post-war seller's market. Tucker was trying to raise money to build his cars by selling tangible floor mats and radios to prospective buyers who put down payments on cars that didn't even exist yet and ultimately never would. The Tucker depended on the innovative, but notoriously fragile Cord preselector transmission that didn't have the structural integrity to handle the torque of the water-cooled conversion Bell helicopter engine that took the place of the 589 cubic inch opposed six originally planned. Tucker was, at best, delusional. The buyers holding radios and floor mats and other accessories when he went broke considered him to be a huckster, a charlatan, and a fraud.

Apparently if it requires actual investigation this channel should not get involved and instead just relies on complete hearsay. While the Tucker did have issues with an SEC investigation which did put the final nail in the coffin there was a long string of poor decisions and bad engineering which doomed the project long before the SEC got involved. Tucker tried to invent a new engine that would use hydraulic valve actuation instead of using a camshaft and pushrod. This cost a significant amount of time and money and once they got a prototype running it produced much less power than they had advertised and was damn near impossible to start. This lead Tucker to buy an airplane engine company which at the time held 65% of the post war aviation engine contracts, all of which Tucker cancelled, to produce an engine. He then had his engineers convert the air cooled aircraft engine over to water cooled which took a lot of time and money. These are just a few of the blunders that lead to Preston Tucker's car company failing. He did have a number of excellent ideas and he may have been successful had he tried to tackle one or two innovations at a time however he tried to reinvent everything on the car in a time frame that just was not plausible all while having little to no money actually coming into the company.

The Bugatti was but ugly. The AMX was merely a shortened Javelin. Was targeted at the 'Vette but was really a 2 seat pony car. And that was a market in decline at the time. Also see E Body Chrysler products, 1970-73. Delorean was an overpriced, underpowered slug. The Prowler was WAY COOL but not a practical car. Pontiac ditched the Chevette derived front suspension just in time to deep 6 the Fiero. Tucker lacked the funds to go into production. The 50 cars built used junkyard Cord transmissions.

Why aren't Saturns made today? In 2009 when Barack Obama took control of GM, he got rid of Saturn cars. Why? Saturns were made in Tennessee Tennessee is not a union state; so Saturn had to go.
