Steve Courtney, I applaud you. You showed that giving the dog attention , with this Dane, training is possible. Yes this dog was a bigger dog breed, as well as being large, you handled him great. No pushing or hard hands. It was great to see the bonding at the end. It wasn't that the dog wasn't trained as a pup. It's that he got trained. You can teach an older or old dogs new things. And done right as you proved, they will like it, as long as you do too. Danes can be hard sometimes, but like all dogs there are things to work through. The things we have them do isn't normal to them, so we make them do things we want. All dogs are not lost causes, they just need to be under stood. I bought home a Dane X bitch that were 10 months old, she growled at my wife and 2 sons the first night as well as me. With time, love, patience and food rewards she is now the most loving dog anyone could wish for. I commend your training technique, it took us a little longer but we got there in the end and I'd do it again.

This makes me so happy! Danes are such emotional creatures and it takes love and patience to help them learn.

This Is why you have to socialize your puppy,take It every wear.Dog's love to ride in the car,see new things.Get them out in the world and you won't have a MESS when they are to big to handle.All dogs want to please their master.You have to be the Master.

I had the same problem with my Dane she had separation anxiety and aggressive towards my visitors. I had to give her to the Great Dane rescue because my mom came very ill. I miss you maddy very much.

True story about taking my 2 dogs to a kennel for a week: Great Dane: "You're leaving me here? NOOOO!" Lab: "You're leaving me here? YESSSSSSS!!!!"

My girl dane is similar. She doesnt lunge just bark a lot. I am the only one who can walk her on the lead. She walks loosly beside me in shops at parks. Will bark if anyone gets close and backs away. My partner cant walk her. And shes so gentle with my toddler. I suspect the first 6 mths ee had her we didnt train her and that has set us backwards

Is this bc he wasn't socialized? My cousins Shepherd was like this. The vet recommended doggy xanax. He would fiercely attack anything that frightened him and everything frightened him.

I got 2 Great Danes, a female and a male. Male 1.5 years old, Female Dog 2.5 Years. Female flips out in the car or on leash if she sees other dogs. No leash no Problem. Male is kind of having self conscious Problems, but nice on leash. Tries to Jump on me and growls on me. I had fights with him to show that I am No.1. Any Hints/Tips? Sorry for my bad english, its not my native tongue, i come from Berlin/Germany.
