This is NOT a boring video! We humans need to have a long enough attention span to attend to your valuable content. Lazy humans should not have a dog- - it takes effort, continuity, & commitment. This is a helpful video for me. Helps me understand shaping behavior. Thank you!

I like these videos because it shows the persistence it takes to train a puppy who is not so easily trained. A lot of us have dogs like this and it helps to see real training with a pup who needs a bit more patience 😊 I always appreciate a trainer who shows the training of a dog like this rather than always an 8 week highly food driven German shepherd lol as a husky owner and potential owner of a Great Dane/English mastiff puppy soon I am thankful for this content! 😅

Just got a pair of Great Danes about 5 months ago. I’ve always had good success with training but these “little guys” seem like they’re in their own world. It was encouraging seeing you still at some basics after 6-7 months old and I’ll definitely taking some of these tools with me. Thanks!

When getting my GDane puppy I was very aware of what I call the Scobby Doo temperament and I picked a fearless female since im 5'2" so i dont get dragged by my dog but the distraction is real. Love seeing a way to engage her ❤

The word 'gregarious' comes to mind when you're describing an active v reactive dogs- kinda like 'passive voice' in writing versus 'active voice', which is a character who the story happens to, and a character who's actions drive the story. Most people prefer reading an active voice, gregarious character because they're much more compelling!

Great video, and totally agree on the necessity of that ground-work with the e-collar before upping levels to higher: After 4 weeks of e-collar conditioning with my adolescent Estrela Mountain Dog, the scenario you speak of happened this morning: The dog got riled up by something she smelled so much that she started running off barking, despite the usual lower levels of e-collar corrections being given. Switched to a higher level, dog stopped. Her first reaction was to redirect aggression, first by trying to run off again, growling and barking, then after the second and third correction, by turning round and barking at me. THEN suddenly, you could see the light bulb going on in her head: She remembered that close to me is where all the good stuff happens, so she came to me and calmed right down. Of course, big praise, play, some more training with high-value treats to close the session up on a good, happy note... But THIS was the first time I literally saw training "kicking in" with a dog, and how much needed the ground-work with the e-collar is. Especially for those large livestock guardian breeds who don't seem to pick up on it quite as quick as GSDs or Malis. THANK YOU, more people need to see those videos of yours; many, many dogs would lead safer lives...

Great story. We are starting an ecollar training series. Will be the most comprehensive ecollar video on KZfaq. What might have helped your situation, and you may have done this but not sure, we build the dog up to understand higher levels before we actually need to use the higher levels. If you only prep them using level 8 for instance, and you do hundreds of reps on 8, that's great. However, when you need to use a 40 to get them back to you please understand in our humble opinion the 40 doesn't feel anything like an 8. Therefore, we slowly and gradually introduce higher levels so they're better prepared for the real higher levels and know how to respond appropriately. There's a way to do it that is fair and even fun for the dog. We don't blast them dozens of times on high level correction levels but they have to feel it at least once or twice before you expect to use it in the real world. 👍🏻🇺🇲

@@AmericanStandardK9 Thank you for your kind response, Garret - looking forward to the ecollar training series you mentioned! I did use higher levels before with her, but not as high as the one that stopped her. When I tried those "higher-but-not-THAT-high" levels the morning she darted off, she sort of shook it off and kept on running. My theory is there might have been something like wild pigs or foxes nearby that morning. Of course, you are absolutely right, the different levels do not feel the same (speaking from experience, ouch...).

@@AmericanStandardK9 ... Yeah, I absolutely should have done what you say: "We don't blast them dozens of times on high level correction levels but they have to feel it at least once or twice before you expect to use it in the real world." Totally my mistake - 2 mistakes, really: First one to be as naive as to think, "Ah, I won't ever need those high levels, only the high-er levels", and second to think this breed will respond similarly to a GSD, Mali or Labrador... Anyway, thanks for having taken the time to explain this gradual building-up process; makes lots of sense.

Any tips on a dog wearing the prong collar or E collar to stop rubbing/sliding on the grass trying to make it come off? Thank you
@AmericanStandardK9
@AmericanStandardK9 3 жыл бұрын
Pressure on/pressure off. If they think rubbing on the grass is going to release pressure make them rethink that plan. It's a great question because it obviously happens and you're seeing it yourself no doubt. Rubbing in the grass does not turn off the pressure. It might even increase it but it definitely doesn't turn it off. Make sure whatever command you are trying to overlay with pressure is easy for them to complete. I like recalls and place boards. Stand just off the grass or put place board just off the grass. Give stim, give command (or vice versa depending upon what stage you're at) and either help them complete the exercise if necessary (as little as necessary but as much as needed). If they go to the grass to turn off the pressure allow the prong or ecollar to convince them otherwise which is the the grass will not turn off the pressure it might even increase the pressure. Same with trying to scratch it off. Just be very mindful the dog understands the command and the ecollar. If they do with 100% certainty know the command etc, but would rather play the grass game then again make that game not so much fun anymore. Often times we find ourselves in the situation if we go up in levels to fast or allow them to turn off the pressure even once playing that grass game. Dont let them beat you at your own game.

@@AmericanStandardK9 ok great thank you for your response. On my journey to have my dog off leash trained! Any upcoming videos on how to help dogs build up confidence and not be so scared of everything like you talk about the Great Dane?

@@sweetscience100 On the same journey here... Best wishes to you and your dog; I wish I had a choice in the matter, but we're stuck in a temporary rental house without fence at the moment, so I had to start e-collar work with my Estrela to ensure she gets the exercise she needs (normal walks don't tire her out, girl needs to run...).

Leash usually hooked to collar (i.e. prong collar) that is higher on neck closer to ears. E-collar deeper on neck

This is a serious question. If someone else trains your dog won’t it only listen to them or do trainers teach the owner what to do on days off from training with teacher. Hopefully that makes sense. Thank you

How should I get my great Dane to quit using its paws
@gunnarkarlsson3615

Great Danes are often scared and timid. It is a big problem with the breed that should be given more attention. With the help of wise breeding, one would try to get rid of these nerve wrecks. A Great Dane is typically reserved for strangers, but this is something other than being nervous and easily frightened.
