Three years after a first attempt that failed, here is the story of my successful comeback in the canadian rockies.
In the summer of 2019, I left Quebec City to embark on the Great Divide Trail, a wild, remote and less-known long-distance trail, with the mission to link Waterton Lakes National Park to the city of Jasper.
I knew it wasn't going to be easy but it definitely tested me.
Through unstopping rain, voracious mosquitoes, constant ups and downs and incredible vistas; This is the story of a successful thru-hike.
.
Thank you to Kayman, Alyssa, but musly Brian and Quin, a magnificient duo of a dad and his son that I met along the way at a critical time of my hike. Without them, everything would have been different. Big shout out to both of you. I love you.
.
I have to thank HappyYak, a freeze-dried meal company that supported me during this adventure. I was really glad to have hot meals that I really looked forward to eating after long, cold and wet days. Thank you for your incredible support.
.
To those who understands (and those who don't) why I have to go do these trails but are still there when I come back : thank you.

Yes! You can start at Waterton and hike all they way to Kakwa Lake up north of Jasper! I'm coming back to hike that very last section (jasper-kakwa). It is an incredibly rewarding but very tough hike! Its right there :)

That bout of low morale after heading off alone, gosh I felt that in my bones. Reminded me of the first time I was trekking through a remote bit of Lapland all by myself. The isolation hit me in the guts and had me cry like a bebbe. Glad even a more experienced hiker isn't entirely immune to that.

@5:02 - was that a regular thing where you had to climb over fallen trees? I'm thinking about cycling the route, and that would be an unfortunate situation if I had to unpack and carry my bike past things like that. Thanks for the great video. I always love seeing people document their journeys :)
@SteezWhizy
@SteezWhizy 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry but the GDT doesnt seem doable in bicycle to me. Most of the trail is pedestrian only, with some contained in National and Provincial parks where biking is prohibited on hiking trails. I know there is the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route, which would be a better choice for you I think :) Anyways, thanks for the good comments!

@@SteezWhizy Wow - thanks for the quick response! I'm aware of the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route, and it looks amazing. Most of the info I could find was for the US side (sadly closed to us Canucks at this time). I was a little confused regarding the Canadian side, and the GDT, and if they were the same. But, it appears they do not follow the same route. I will follow your advice and NOT attempt the trail with a bike. Thanks :)

@SteezWhizy 3 жыл бұрын
@@gfree8037 choosing a camera is such a personnal choice that it'd be hard for me to give you an honest advice. One thing to know tho is that lenses for full frame cameras are usually bigger and heavier, so that may not be good if you have to carry it for 2650 miles 🤔 it all depends on you.

@@SteezWhizy Nice! I'm using a similar camera for my hikes (A6400 with Sony 24mm f1.8 Zeiss lens) and it has no stabilization either, I do the same, trying to hold it steady. Another question: Did you use a LUT for this video and if so which one? And which drone for the aerial shots?
@SteezWhizy
@SteezWhizy 3 жыл бұрын
@@BackpackingVideos I did use a Lut from Lutify to unify the whole thing together,but lots of the color grading was done manually (long and painful task haha) For the Drone I used my Mavic Air, and I flew it only in areas where it was legal to do so (so very little on the GDT). In fact, I sent it home after 1 week because of the National Park incoming (where it is illegal to fly a drone)
