This is my pen review for the Lamy Safari. This particular pen I have is a charcoal gray. It is very nice to the touch and the bold nib is incredibly smooth. This is an excellent pen for beginner usage. I highly recommend the cartridge converter for a greater ink variety.
If you haven't already I highly recommend you upgrade you writing experience to that of a fountain pen. Getting your first fountain pen can greatly elevate your experience when handwriting. This is a perfect fountain pen for beginners and one of my favorites for it's great level of versatility.

The first fountain pen I ever owned is a Lamy Safari exactly like the one in this video. My pen was given to me as a Christmas gift in 1989 (at that time the converter came with the pen) and the pen is still going strong, never any trouble with it. The converter wore out and had to be replaced but the pen itself has never caused me any trouble and writes as well today as it did almost 30 years ago.

I love the look and feel of the pen. I got the Medium nib Al-Star from Amazon, but I liked it overall, but the nib was pretty scratchy. I got some 2000 grit sand paper, and I was able to get it to write much smoother, but it still is scratchy when I change the writing angle ever so slightly. I'm trying to polish it so that it's smooth. I am thinking that I should probably get another Al-Star from the Goulet Pen Co. I think the nib would probably be better there.

*halfway through the video* I agree with you, it's such a great pen. I just bought my firat Safari that is the Petrol version a while ago and quite satisfied with the performance. What i love the most is of course the design. Like you said, it's minimalistic. I like that kind of design. And for the price, because i havent use it for a long time i cannot give an opinion about it. (Because most people compliment it as a 'worth your money pen' because it can last a long time) Though, having Platinum Preppy and TWSBI GO as my first two fountain pen before Lamy Safari, it is, TOO LIGHT!🤣 having the cap on the back and cartridges/converters add the weight but not so much on the nib. Feels like the pen floating in my hand, makes it harder to write, cause you're not supposed to press a fountain pen hard while writing. But i think it kinda forces me to diligently train how i write. All in All, i'm satisfied! A good quality pen for starters.

It is definitely a great looking pen. The lightness of the pen is the greatest draw back. That being said I prefer the safari over the more "premium" vista and lx because I like the texture of the safari's grip section more. There is another commentor here who said they've had their safari for at least a couple decades and that it still writes well. A great testament to the pens longevity.
@sukmasucisafitri1457
@sukmasucisafitri1457 5 жыл бұрын
@@DieyenDualPen agreed. The best thing in safari's special edition is that it has a matte finish, giving it a great look and good texture to grip. The LX, vista and al star is slippery like you said, and.. for the body, because it is being coated, when it has scratch it will show up.

I never got used to the lightness of the Lamy. My first nib was a medium, and a massive gusher to the point that it was a problem. It's better now with a fine, but an EF would have been better with my small writing. I wonder if they offer an italic?
@DieyenDualPen

It is very light, so much so you can tell when the pen is full or empty. I've found this point similar to the visconti medium. In my limited experience I've found inconsistency between nibs from Lamy. I'm not sure if they have an italic but they stub is very fun.

Anyone encountered a nib/feed issue with the Safari? Mine's an EF nib, and it seems strange that it leaves a greyish line, quite dry (sometimes drying out, even tho there is still ink in the converter), whereas another, say a Sailor with a Fude nib, leaves a thin but saturated black line. Ink used in this comparison: Noodler's Black.
@DieyenDualPen

I have an EF Lamy point and also notice the same issue. You can buy different sizes nibs and swap them pretty easily on the safari though. That should help.

Thanks! I'd just swapped the Lamy steel nib for a gold one (both EF), and there was a definite improvement in colour saturation. Also, with a razor blade, i've tried widening the space between tines of the steel nib - this gave a slight improvement in colour saturation. Neither are as saturated as my Sailor Fude nib (steel - inexpensive), which gave a nice thin line, very black! Perhaps that's why some writers favour Japanese brands for the F/EF type of writing (Asian characters). Gd luck! @@DieyenDualPen

@dridrops
@dridrops 4 жыл бұрын
Hello, when you purchase a fountain pen it usually does not come with ink and you have to purchase that separate. That being the case, if your pen has the converter (for Lamy you have to buy their specific one separate) you can use any water based ink you like. Waterman Jet Black is my favorite for everyday use. If you do not want the converter, you have to buy Lamy specific ink cartridges - this is typically more expensive in the long run.

If a Lamy is brand new it will come with a blue cartridge, which comes inside the pen. If you plan to use a converter flush the pen first since Lamy tests all their pens before they leave the factory so there is usually residential blue ink left in the pen when you fist get it.

@@DieyenDualPen thank you for your response, I appreciate it. I'm a rookie, but I'll definitely give it a try. In my brief observations, spencerian cursive seems to be more stylized than the palmer method, and the two also seem to differ slightly in their angularity. Also, just want to take a moment to say thank you for your video on the correct grip for a pen. I've began pronating my wrist so that my knuckles face upward, and it feels a little awkward at the moment but I can definitely see how it's much more fluid and solves the problem of having to move my hand repeatedly while I write because the outside of my palm keeps sticking to the page. I'm also 100% going to jump on Amazon and purchase a hard copy of your book. Your content is very valuable 🙏🏻

Hi Billy, to answer your question I practice Business Penmanship (palmer) much more than I do Spencerian but I am a fan of all American styles of penmanship and their history. The Palmer Method or Business Penmanship is the evolution of Spencerian to a more practical everyday style of writing for business purposes. Letter shapes and forms for the most part are very similar to Business Penmanship (BP) omitting all shades for the sake of speed. There may be some variance in slant from teacher to teacher but generally BP tends have more spacing I think because the method production encouraged more freedom of movement and speed. Both beautiful in their own right tho.

My only complaint with Lamy Fountain pens? Lamy doesn't make water proof/resistant ink. So I usually just end up draining their cartridges with a syringe, and putting something like Noodlers Bullet Proof in side them. Very easy to just drain the crappy lamy ink and put in something more archival quality. I use my fountain pens for legal documents, So ink that can't be washed off with water is an absolute requirement.

Incredible smooth with a 14k gold nib. It even had a subtle ink window so you can stay topped up on your ink. Not a fake, some venders are less reliable at providing quality pens.

@@DieyenDualPen Agree! I purchased mine from Goulet Pens. It has an EF nib and still puts down a little too much ink for me when compared to my Pilot Metro with a F nib, also purchased from Goulet. It's still new, so time will tell ... especially with that grip :)

Wish I could write with two hands, or ONE for that matter, I write like a 4 year old doctor in a loony toons cartoon 🤣 But drawing is fun too 😎

Anyone can improve their writing. Its combination of technical skill and an understand for form. Very similar to drawing. The ideal letter forms should very clear in your minds eye. Best of luck!

Why not just put some grip tape on the grips that should fix the moisture problem

I like to keep the option for resale in the future. Especially the Lamys since they can have high collectible value as colors come and go from the collections. I also have a lot of pens so there's really no reason for me to solve the grip issue when I can just write with another pen that doesn't have that problem. You must be talking about LX or the Al-star though, right? Because I never had that issue with the Safari.

I hate Lamy. It's the typical pen everyone in Germany used at school in the 90s. You always got a blue stained middlefinger from it, uncomfortable to hold and the tip would fall off after a while. Just hate it, also bc it's connected to school time memories. Your channel is very interesting though.

I haven't had any issue with mine, maybe I got lucky 😁 Glad you've found the channel interesting.
