We started on this pattern over two years ago. Our aim is to keep it simple. But like any pattern we put onto the channel will be a proven fly. In other words it has to be more consistent. We will not waist our time or your time. Hope you enjoy the video. And please feel free to Subscribe, give us a thumbs up, or even send us a comment. We will always reply. Many thanks Shaun.

You will find the cling film useful for many things in tying. I am working on a pearl olive nymph at moment which is catching a lot of fish for myself and the boys. But I am about to tweak it, as I had a thought of cling film. Who knows you may even see this fly one day if its that good. Which we think it is.

I hope you enjoyed your coffee and had fun tying. Use this idea of Cling Film as an example. The pattern I have on the video is a bit bigger than I actually use. This was more for the video. I tend to use 18 up to 14. The pattern is more focused on still waters rather than river. And this when fished as a dry. When fished as a wet it can fish both river and still water. But for any body with a bit of a creative mind, can open up to more interesting designs. I will at a later date cover how I fish this pattern. There is coverage of this pattern being fished on the channel. If you fish with lure patterns you should really check out the video which I done last month. Finally Improved new ways catch more. Another pattern that we have put a lot of work into. To look at it you would never guess what we have done. Trust me it really works. But this pattern is by far the best I have ever fished. And you thought the Cling Film was good. Thanks for the comment Melissa. Take care. Shaun.

@@shaunfishes101 absolutely! I tied a half dozen this morning and they look great really buggy. 99% of the time we fish one of several local lakes here, I’m in central Georgia and unless I want to drive a few hours we don’t really have trout. I typically fish top water for Bream and Crappie. I make a LOT of crappie and bream jigs I fish with my spinning reel when we have a lot of tree cover. I am still not that great with my fly rod just yet lol.. I subscribed and have been going through your stuff. You have a VERY informative channel I as a newer fly fisherman truly appreciate the way you explain things. It’s going to sound so backwards to you but I actually got into fly fishing because I love tying flies. I have always been an AVID fisherman but I have always used either my spinner or bait caster until just a few months ago. Please keep up the great work, I look forward to seeing more

@@melissaspake7727 I get what you are saying about tying the flies. Have you done ear rings yet. I do make the effort in trying to put across information in a way that is easy to follow. However if you listen and watch carefully you will pick up even more. I enjoy dishing out brain teasers. But when the riddle is worked out, it then makes sense. I am amused how you refer to your self as a fisherman. You are Melissa a fisherwomen. We have a lot of fisherwomen on our water. It can be a difficult time learning fly fishing. But take your time and enjoy the whole experience. I think women are better than men for most of the time, as men constantly want to cast distance. And this is what they think of most. Perfect the cast at short range, and keep control. I wish you all the best during this learning stage. But its all worth it. If there is anything we can help you with, Please just ask. Take care Melissa. Shaun. Oh thanks.

Hi Chris, nice to hear from you. The Squirrel is an amazing pattern. Check out our latest video which is mainly about the Squirrel. This pattern fishes well through out the year. But the Cling film Fly is better in small 16 and fished when fish are higher in he water. Mind saying that Steve and my self fished the cling film last week, and done quite well. Which was a difficult day. I would do more work at the vice, but I cant get to grips with the camera to give me what I am looking for. Not very good with cameras. And besides that there are only a few patterns that we have created that work so well. But I am working on the camera problem. And we are continually working on patterns, but they take a long time to get to camera. This is because we have to fish them for at least 12 months to find out if they are a pattern worth having or a one day wonder. Great to hear from you Chris. Don't forget to check out the latest video. Look forward to hearing from you again soon. Shaun.

Its a great material and why we don,t see much of it in the fly tying world. The smaller size is best with the wing. But the Ostrich one in all sizes is great. Size 14 is my go too for most of the time, and I fish them fast for most of the time. On the water today I had an experience that has happened a few times lately. I have had fish going for my knot on the leader. Now I can hear you say, shit you got big knots. Honestly they are no bigger than yours. Well I hope knot. HA HA. Crazy though. Take care mate. On the day it certainly does and will. Smaller sizes with the cling film. Ostrich pattern. All sizes. But mess about with the idea of cling film and see what you come up with. I will spend sometimes years perfecting a fly. Sometimes I will start it, try it. not so good. Put it to bed. Months later have another tweak for it. And it goes on till its done. I have never done much of them as I struggled with the camera. Mind I still struggle with the damn thing. Give me a fly rod to work with any day. There will only be a few of them, as we only post the good stuff. If you are into damsels, we might have a good damsel on the way. Did one two years ago, but had to shelve it, as it killed to many fish. I mean the fish were literally swallowing it. But the new one is looking promising, and if all goes well could have a video near end of year once we have fished it enough. Oh the cling film is a good idea, and hope every body finds it useful. Then the Ostrich on the day is something else. Thanks for the comment. Take care. Shaun.

Glad you enjoyed the video. What I have shown here is an example of what can be done when thinking out side the box. Like most patterns they have there day. If you are moving more towards the Cling Film Fly, then keep them small. I will show how I fish it in a later video. This pattern is more for still waters not river. If fished as a dry. If fished as a wet, it will be fine. What I am trying to do is give every one the ideas. But you can incorporate Cling Film into a lot of patterns. Keep it simple and you won't go far wrong. 3S. No problem David. The most consistent is the smaller with the wing. For most of the time I fish this like I do a dry. Cast out, leave for about 10 to 15 sec, then drag towards you for a short distance. Nothing interested. recast to another area. Fish will often take in this short time. Mind a lot will depend on the water and conditions at the time. Good luck mate. Shaun.

Thank you, but it is really simple. We work with a lot of patterns which are so simple and they really do work. The Cling Film pattern on a size 16 during warmer months works really well. But the Squirrel, the first pattern is the go to pattern. This works all year on the day. Not sure if you fish lures [streamers] but we have been doing a lot of work on a pattern to correct a lot of problems that lures have. Again its simple but effective. Not very good with computers so I am unable to tag the video. But if you are interested you will find it on the channel 7 months ago. Thumb says, Check this Out. Improved lures. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Really appreciate it. Take care. Shaun.

Thanks for that. I have just this moment finished tying a load of the cling film fly. A lot smaller than on the video. I have been using the Fulling Mill Grab gape Black Nickel size 14. Less the wire. I originally left wire out and they lasted OK. Wire in they do last a bit longer after fish attack. On still waters we fish this as a dry. which is not on the water for too long. Cast, leave 5 to 10 sec, little twitch, then lift off and cover another piece of water. We cover a lot of water this way. And the fish will hit this within seconds of landing on the water. I have fished it subsurface and had success. Thanks for the comment. Oh and the cling film is put into a good few of our patterns. Take care. Shaun.

Okay, I love natural dubbing, but, being frugal, I source it from my grey cat. It's the guard hairs you want to go for, but it twists onto the thread much better than rabbit or possum. A rabbit like, thick coat is needed for sourcing, but a diluted tabby or British blue will work perfectly. I'm totally about to tie this up. Hopefully the terror in the southern Appalachian mountains will find it as tasty.

The first pattern works well for most of the year. We fish this mainly high in the water. but a weighted version could do as well. We have only just started fishing with a weighted version. So early days. The Cling Film one is mostly on a small 16 hook, and fished when fish are high in the water. For most of the time we fish it like a dry. Cast move cast move. Most of the patterns we fish at the moment are fished fast. The fish at Hayscastle are responding well to small patterns just below the surface. Midday on wards I go intermediate with the Hayscastle Black and Blue. Between four and six foot. Long steady draws. Had four fish this morning on the floater with a small olive nymph. I tied something similar years ago having started using cling film for the back of a shrimp pattern and experimenting I tied something as a wing but I don't know if I gave up on it, didn't fish it with confidence or lost it possible to a fish, having seen your success it may be worth playing with some cling film again :)

I knew I would not be the only one out there. But how has a crisp packet got recognition before the cling film. Cling film is miles better. Yes you should get back into it. But I totally understand when you say having the confidence. The buzzer one is good. Mind I have found that the buzzer fishing in our areas is not what it was. We have more of the really small stuff coming off of late. The whole idea of this and the cling film is to get people thinking. All my inspiration comes from when I am fishing. When I look in the fly box looking for that fly that ain't there. Keep at it John. Shaun.

@@shaunfishes101 As an artist I tend to experiment a lot and end up with a lot of flies that I don't end up fishing. It is odd that you mentioned the buzzer fishing, fishing buzzers are my go-to method and I have struggled I had put it down to the water I fish being drained for repair and fishing started back up this year on the top pond and the bottom res having opened back up last year. also likewise mainly tiny stuff coming off!

@@johnbelcher7955 Fish tend to switch on to the largest hatch. I have seen it plenty of times when say a smaller hatch of something much bigger comes off. You will find a few fish switch on to the bigger fly. But for most remain on the dominant hatch. At this moment seems to be this small stuff. Bit like the canis fly. The small stuff could be where we are heading due to climate change. The smaller bugs are less affected by changing temperatures.

Really looking to get into fly tying I have some materials just need a good vice, what vice is this?
@shaunfishes101
@shaunfishes101 Жыл бұрын
I have checked the vice for a name. I have now idea. But it is a simple vice. It can rotate which is really handy. And it cost me less than £70. My first vice was very basic and cost less than £20. I tied flies on this for over 35 years. OK somethings were made more difficult, but I had ways around this. Making sure you have good jaws for holding the hook, and the rotating jaw is really handy. I would start lower and in time if you really get into it, spend bigger. By doing this you will have a good idea as to what you want from a vice, due to the experience you have gain with your first vice. Nothing better than tying your own patterns and catching. Tip. Keep them smaller and sparse. Have fun Jay. Take care mate. Shaun.

Where can a person purchase the cling film Shaun???

Joe I am so sorry, but we have been trying to get a supplier for the flies we fish with for so long. We keep getting a No. I think that its more down to our selves being a small concern. And in other cases it means competing with already existing clients that they feel obliged. Stepping on toes if you like. There are smaller suppliers. But I would be worried about quality and demand. What I would suggest, is make friends with someone who ties flies. I myself have been asked many times about tying them for subscribers. At first this was fine, but it soon got out of hand. Again I am so sorry. But we will continue to look for this supplier. And who knows. One day. Take care Joe. Shaun.

Nice fly, is this for stillwater or will it work on rivers with ripples and runs, etc?
@shaunfishes101
@shaunfishes101 Жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin thanks for the comment. It is more for the stillwater. This is more down to the sparse dressing. It will float, but not for long. On the stillwaters we fish the dry differently to the river. But there is nothing stopping you dressing it up and still use the Cling Film wings. If you are fishing the river with more of a wet fly style. Down and across, then I would be tempted. You will never know unless you try. But the Squirrel and Ostrich fished just below the surface could be a good bet. Sorry I can't help you any more. I have spent my whole life on the rivers. But over the last six years its been all stillwaters. This is due to the quality of our rivers here. Not good. There was a point to this video, and it is about trying to get people thinking out side the box. Thanks again Kevin. Take care. Shaun.

You are probably correct. I have just automatically put wire in with any soft or loose materials. Thing is how will it stand up to a good few fish. I will give this a go. Thanks for the comment. Take care. Shaun.

Only one thing... not a fan of using large thread strings. You can build a base without them. Consider a single commercial tyer can produce 36,000 flies produced annually. If every flies uses another 1.5 inches of thread that is 4500 feet of wasted thread from just one outfit.

Heavily stocked trout ponds that are private,with no heavy fishing pressure, sure most any fly will catch trout. Just saying.

I totally agree that fishing on stocked still waters are easy. And stock fish are uneducated as to what real food is. They jump at any thing as they learn. But the educated fish is something else. But with out going into great detail about fish. This is more about the fly. This video is not so much about this fly, but more about the Cling Film, and what you can do with it. However if I was to fish this pattern for stock fish, my catch rate would be low. Every body knows stock fish love something a bit bigger and with flash. Thanks for your comment. But it was pointless as most people already know this. Take care. Shaun.

Very true how fish see a fly 🪰 one angle at a time. " Pretty Flies" are for fisherman! "Ugly Flies" are for fish 🐟. Fish want a natural looking fly. Flies, Larva, Leaches and various other flies and bugs, minnows ect are crucial to a fishes diet. So observing and understanding how to know what dry flies or nymphs to use will determine your success on a river or lake/and

So simple really isn't it. But so many are brain washed, made to believe this is the pattern. When in reality most who watch these channels are fishing stock ponds. Stock fish unlike resident fish or wild fish will readily take a huge variety of patterns, as they learn what is real food. Great to hear from you. thanks for the comment. Shaun.

@@shaunfishes101 I hear all kinds of excuse's from I had a bad day of fishing because I did'nt get much sleep last night so my game was off, to there are no fish in this water. Cry babies and whiner's stay home. If you love to fish like I do then go fish it up and catch em. I fish with a few guys everyday. We do Catch & Release and we keep track of the amount of fish we catch and where the pattern used, weather, UV Index ext. Fishing is not Rocket Science its a matter of spending the time and learning what they eat and what affects their eating patterns like the Rain, Cold, UV index, BP, and not washing your hands after you crap 😒 .
