This video played fine within Sony Vegas Studio, but very oddly in Windows Media Player. On KZfaq it seems to be part way between the two. I just wish my videos would look and sound the way I set them in the editing software. No matter - this will have to be good enough. I have delayed uploading it too long already.
This feature film (also broadcast as a mini-series) has I think enough commentable material in it for one more video.

Lindybeige clearly missed the memo about how honour in those days was derived. The point was to miss your opponent on purpose, and let the air displacement by your weapon create a low pressure area that killed your opponent by suffocation. Needless to say wars took VERY long in those times.

I watched it at the time of broadcasting... I'm not proud of it. But back in those days, There was no Netflix, and each blockbuster (look it up) rental was $3/night. Yeah, this movie was the equivalent of clickbait but it was cheap entertainment and even Hollywood movies weren't much better (required cultural prerequisites included "Simon Birch" and "Field of Dreams" - dark days indeed). Luckily, I was smoking weed while watching, so that helped make it more pleasant. Being familiar with the story, I remember being disappointed though.

@bruisedbanana7612
@bruisedbanana7612 10 жыл бұрын
Wrong, this isn't even a question of accurate fighting, it's an issue of piss poor storytelling. You do NOT need to miss your fighting partner to ensure their safety, you do that by cuing your attack, letting them dodge, and then once they're out of the way, swinging your attack THROUGH the space that they were in, in order to create the illusion that yes, yes you are trying to fucking kill them here. With proper practice, timing, and rehearsal, this should be safe AND effective storytelling, but noooo we get people widely missing their marks when there is absolutely no reason to do so. This is incredibly basic stuff. Who fight-directed this movie again? Did they even get a proper fight director on board?
@gilgamesh310
@gilgamesh310 10 жыл бұрын
Bruised Banana The things you mentioned have nothing to do with storytelling. Its about fight choreography. You're right about all the problems with it but it has nothing to do with the story. There's extremely few films to have realistic fight choreography. A real life fight wouldn't even involve any clashing of the blades. The fights would probably be over in a few seconds.
@bruisedbanana7612
@bruisedbanana7612 10 жыл бұрын
gilgamesh310 Oh, when I say storytelling I mean more along the lines of conveying a specific narrative through fight choreography, not the overall plot of the movie. So for example, if you want to convey the message that you are taking the fight seriously and you want to defend yourself properly, holding your shield in front of you would be a good way of creating the story of someone who's trying to defend themselves, versus the story of, say, a fighter who is cocky and is fooling around by not holding their shield properly. It's bad storytelling when you execute the choreography in a way that is inconsistent with your characterization and the story that you're telling. Like in this video's case, it's not realistic that a fighter would swing his sword so far away from the target he's trying to kill. So yeah, I was thinking of in terms of the narrative implied/created by the visuals, not the overall story of the movie. Hope that clarifies things! I think that blade-clashing caaaaan work as long as it's not the "haha we're gonna hit our swords against each other in mid-air whoo hoo isn't this fun" type of blade-clashing, but I think that again, everything has to go back to the story, or shall we say, "image" that we want to create. In a movie medium, lots of parrying/blocking and long fights serve the purpose of conveying the message that the people fighting are equals. If the fight is extremely short, that tends to convey the message that one party is overwhelmingly stronger than the other, which might be at odds with the story we want to tell through the fight. I think that ultimately there needs to be a balance between the dramatic needs of the story and realism; depends on the tone of the movie and what kind of image that you're trying to create, I guess.

They've got all the stuffing up one end. Leaving all of the costuming blunders out, I'm amazed at how many times someone thinks that it's a good idea to turn his back on someone with a long sharp implement in hand, in the middle of a battle. Maybe the big, floppy counterweight shield is specifically held to the rear so it protects during that bizarre pirouette manoeuvre? And the logic of extracting one perfectly good (if strangely crafted) javelin from your shield and throwing it away, so that you can walk 15 feet over to get another just like it, is mind numbingly stupid. Do they blunt on a single hit? Judging by Menelaus's aim he was on a 2 second delay. Were they afraid that he might swear at some inopportune moment and they'd have to bleep him?
@morallyambiguousnet

This is part of why I still think animation is far superior at action. You don't have to put people's lives in danger for them to really behave as though they're trying to hurt each other (or a plane is crashing into a barn, etc.) Cartoons don't have stunt doubles.

CGI has the same benefit: You can make the characters actually move like they're trying to kill eachother without having human actors actually endangering eachother's lives a little bit (blunt sword props of proper weight can still fuck you up real good).

Even in animation, it's still not fixed, at least in video games. The most egregious in my opinion is the Total War series, where soldiers are much more content to attack each-other's swords and bang on their opponents shields than actually attempt to stab the bloke trying to kill them.

Thank you so much! Also and especially for pointing out that "actual strong people don't look like that". When modern day training is done over a large enough amount of time, there's rather obvious differences to what a physically trained professional would look like who does physcial work AND work outs in modern facilities. The difference between those two is not even close to what an ancient soldier or wrestler would have looked like and we should all be aware of that whenever Craig from Planet Fitness tells us about "getting in shape"...yeah, it's the SHAPE that matters to them, not the condition or the performance as it should be!

The Sword choreography followed basic rules in terms of pulling your strike off to the side ( it is a movie and you don't want to actually strike your fellow actor) But the actors seemed to not have spent much time practicing to pull this off a little better and the cameras should have been placed differently.
@Scawking

Honestly, if martial arts actors can duck underneath a proper kick, then these actors can learn to duck underneath a well aimed half-strength swing with a blunt sword
@LaughingOwlKiller
@LaughingOwlKiller 10 жыл бұрын
Scawking bit of a difference..a well aimed kick hurts...I have been on the receiving end of one...but a sword strike..even with a blunted sword at half strength can do some damage that a kick won't. It's timing is all. He ducked before the strike was really in frame. Like I said they didn't take the time to practice.

„Yeah, the Romans were descendants of the Trojans” I hope you say this in relation to the fiction novel called Aeneidis, while not believing the book. Or I would think you suffer from a Balkan malady who tends to give the bad habit of assuming some nation invented all and was the pillar of all humanity. Well, is not sure what Troy was, some say was some part of a Anatolian confederation of city states under the Hatti, and for sure Rome had nothing to do with them or the Greeks of the early period, except implementing some Greek things latter.

@@VasileIuga This is how I understand it too, Troy was an Anatolian-speaking polity possibly named Truwisa, part of a Hittite confederation. They would have had armor, weapons and clothing styles more like the ancient Anatolians than anything Roman, which came centuries later. The Aeneid was just a Roman propaganda attempt to link Rome to the heroes of the Greek Classical age to flatter Augustus Caesar by comparing him favorably to Aeneas. I'd really love to see an actual Anatolian panoply. Might be one of those things lost to history like the color of a dinosaur's eyes.

If the choreography is well planned and the actors well practiced for this scene, the techniques should not have to be this atrocious. If they practice with foam props long enough until any and all blows are expected, and where needed choreographed with cues to make the more dangerous hits very easy to know when they are coming (such cues can be planned to be hardly visible for the camera or completely out of view), then these scenes should not at all have to be dangerous. In my absolutely amateur opinion, that is. My guess is either they did not think it was worth it to hire historical fighting consultants meaning the guys responsible for the fights had little idea what they were doing, or they knew the actors are not in any way skilled fighters so they purposely choreograph fights with combatants aiming nowhere near their opponents in case they screw up. Because it would cost too much money and effort to teach the actors how to do it properly, and frankly most of their audience will not notice or care anyway.
