Great Rail Restorations

4 жыл бұрын

In the grand finale to this unique restoration project, all four carriages are brought together to create a bespoke Time Train, representing 100 years of railway history. The Time Train will run on the beautiful Llangollen Railway, so three of the carriages have to make their own epic journeys to get there.

In a first for railway restoration, this series takes four of the most iconic carriages ever to run on the railways and brings them back to their former glory. Teams of world-class restoration experts each restore a different carriage from a different era, spanning 100 years of railway travel including one of only two surviving Royal coaches used by Queen Victoria in 1887 and a once-glamorous 1960 Pullman dining car.
Presented by historian Peter Snow, viewers follow the ups and downs of each restoration while TV presenter Henry Cole explores what it was like to be a passenger in each era of rail travel.

Watching this whole series, has left me not only with a sense of admiration for the restoration teams of the four different pieces of history, but a desire to someday travel from Canada to Llangollen Steam Railway and experience these very historic pieces of 100 years of rail travel for myself.

An amazing accomplishment. I'm 68 and sitting on my couch and look at what this guy has done. You can't help being impressed.

I'm North American and have been somewhat jaded by my personal experience. I'm also a model engineer ( 7.5 gauge and G gauge ). Thank you for providing the real context for my shared obsession with all railway fans. Beautiful job people and a lovely distraction from our current pandemic times. Christmas Day 2020

The four car restoration videos EXCELLENT! The Canadian Pacific Railway model train in the opening scene is very special for me! Comment to follow. Car restoration brings back fond memories for me! Countless hours of volunteer interior restoration on a TPO(RPO). & Baggage car. The entire narrow gauge railway in my province was closed down in 1988 August 1981 marked the centennial of starting construction on our railway. At that time I was a member of a transportation historical society. Two years earlier Terra Transport a division of Canadian National invited the society to form a joint planning committee for this special event. I was selected as one of several members representing the society on the joint committee The RPO car VERY SPECIAL for me ! My late father was a mail clerk on the car. As a kid he hide me several times on board while on the road. I was lucky to travel in both directions for the week long event in the railways manager's private car Terra Nova 2. In October 1985 accepted Canadian pacific Railway special quest invitation on behalf of the society for the centennial of the driving of the last spike November 07 1985 at Craigellachie British Columbia. The lone invitation from the four Atlantic provinces. Rare events . Twice in a lifetime !

As an American, I'm so pleased to see that there are so many heritage lines in Britain. Over here, we have a few, but "rails to trails" seems to be the sad end for many of our short lines. And I do like these hiking expeditions, but still.....

After seeing the stars of restoration, it reminded of a coach in dire need of attention I saw some years back. When I first visited Steamtown in Scranton Pennsylvania, they had just opened. There sat a Great Western coach in its cream and chocolate livery. It had come over for exhibition with the King George V locomotive. The same time the locomotive received it's bell, 1927. The locomotive did return home, but not this coach. The coach was stored in an Army storage lot for more years, the weather and vandals making things worse for the coach. Hopefully it has not been scrapped. For it would be a great project for the talent in the show.

Really? My veneration vanished in the face of her attitude toward Dianna. She didn't even think making the funeral national mattered. Blair (like him or not) stepped in and sorted her out over that.

@@984francis I think a generalization like that can be......tricky, maybe is the word? Many thought as you, I know, but others seemed to give her some benefit of the doubt. Remember too, there's "Protocol" - many things that regular people thought should be done, such as lowering the royal standard to half-mast, weren't done because protocol didn't call for them, and at least at first, she didn't deviate, at least at first.

@@984francis Never understood anyone's fascination with her. I grew up with the Charles & Diana saga. I found it all terribly annoying. Let's face it the match was bad Charles didn't love her and neither did she really love Charles. Diana slept with countless men at least Charles slept with the one he always loved.

While the UK seems to be very devoted to preserving its historic railroads, here in the USA, no one seems to care, what a shame!! Thank you for saving such important touchstones of railroading history and bringing then back to life and putting them back running the rails!!

Those that do all too often seem not to care about the coaches, just steam locos. Strasburg, Colebrookdale, and Colorado’s Durango & Silverton and Cumbres & Toltec do, as well as a few others, but as a whole, carriages hardly ever seem to get such love.
