That’s MY S10 Truck behind you Matt at the 11:37 min mark!!! Guaranteed! I rebuilt that thing in my 20’s starting with a new frame out of Indiana. The slightly off-color fender flares, the odd gap between the fender and door by the mirror, and the tires are a dead give away. I sold it to a high-school kid in Brigham city in 2015. Holy crap! What a coincidence! It’s like spotting a lost child to me🤯

Now Matt, as a great fan of your videos and a proud Canadian (of a certain age) I feel the need to briefly mention that the Gordon Lightfoot song you reference in this video is called the "Canadian Railroad Trilogy". It's about the building of the National railway in Canada as a way to physically connect the entire country from coast to coast. We grew up knowing it was referred to as the National Dream. And I would have never imagined that anybody outside the borders of this country would know any part of this song. Never ever considered it until I saw this video. The fact that you actually kinda know this song is actually just amazing! Thanks! I just had to say something. I never make comments - hate typing! Cheers!

Notice the pattern with Matt's off-road recovery when they don't think they need help and do a solo run inevitably they end up buried to the axles hung off a trailer in the snow Etc but when they try and pre-plan and think oh this will be a big one and bring extra people it ends up being the simplest one they've done all week LOL

Four years ago on one of my drives back to Oregon from a visit to San Antonio I saw a sign on the freeway for the Golden Spike National Historic Park. I drove miles through the country before I reached the site. On the way I stopped and hiked around some of the historic spots and learned a lot. When I reached the visitors center I learned they were putting the trains away for the winter. A park ranger spoke to us, then they started up the two trains and backed them into buildings for the winter. Well worth my unplanned stop.

The current weather pattern has caused a large area of drought over many of the western states. Lakes and reservoirs across this region have shrunk dramatically over the past years. People being the curious creature that they are have begun to explorer the receding shores as adventures. Lucky for MORR they are making for many rescues and will continue to do so because you can't change the weather or People. Great bit of history added in this vlog, I loved that museum when I was there years ago.

For anyone wondering about those google pins being inaccurate, it's cuz the folks aren't waiting long enough before getting the pin in google maps. When a phone grabs an initial location, it's a rough grab. It usually grabs cell tower location first which is wildly inaccurate. Then as GPS grabs more satellites it'll be more accurate, down to a few feet. So what the customers are doing is opening google maps and immediately grabbing a location/pin which is the cell tower location data(not accurate). What they should be doing is opening up google maps, waiting 1-5 minutes until the blue circle in google maps is as small as it's gonna get(usually 10 feet), then grabbing a pin for Matt. Also, you can/should use GPS coordinates instead of pins. They're available in google maps. What this allows you to do is to copy the GPS coords, close google maps, reopen it and input the gps coordinates. This is exactly what matt will see when he puts those GPS coords in. You can be sure he'll get the correct location.

Doug Moran-----Looking at history and recognizing some " bad parts" is not revising history , or cancelling it . I am originally from Dartmouth , Nova Scotia . In Nova Scotia we had different stuff named after Edward Cornwallis, who " settled" Halifax . There were roads , schools , a naval station and statues honoring Cornwallis . However , he was a vile human being. When he was a British army officer in Scotland , one of his favorite tricks was to lock Highlanders in their homes , and set the homes on fire . In Nova Scotia, he gave natives blankets infected with small pox . When we started to realize what a sweetheart he was , it made sense to stop honoring him .

I did a report on the Transcontinental Railroad in 4th grade. I always thought that the two trains met at a place called Promontory Point, Utah on July 4, 1869. I don't remember the song by Gordon Lightfoot. The song I remember by him is about a Great Lakes Cargo Ship called the Edmund Fitzgerald that sank in 1975 during a storm. Quite a heartfelt song. I would say the song that is fitting here is a song by John Mellencamp. In part of the song he would sing, "Drive your 4WD right into the mud." (Everyone needs a hand to hold onto?) Great video!

At Craigalachie, in British Columbia in the Rocky Mountains , there is a small museum related to the building of the CPR in Canada . It was a jarring to see that the Chinese laborers who worked on that railway took 3 days to lay track that other crews took 4-5 days . We needed them to help build the railway , then did everything we could to keep them from coming to Canada . We imposed a $50 " head tax" , then increased it to $100 , and later to $500 .

Matt and crew out mucking around in my playground is pretty cool. It doesn't seem that long ago, ( early 90's), when I was out there and the wind was whipping up some huge waves that were crashing into the rocks and washing along the beaches. The brine shrimpers had thousands of bags stacked along the shore ready to ship and the mosquitos and no-see-ums were brutal. Now, in the midst of a 1200 year drought, the lake is so far out there you can hardly see it from the North shore. Now it's The Great Salt Puddle. Kinda makes me sad. Thanks for sharing.

I cannot believe that anyone would take a vehicle in that mud. It’s the stinkiest mud, and very corrosive. I’m glad you got them out easily. I’ve heard of some vehicles getting lost out there.

Years ago you could drive down a dirt road heading West. Eventually you would come upon a gate. Turning right, is an unimproved dirt road where you can enter the actual railroad right of way. We did it in a mini-van. It was fun.

You can tell Matt is becoming a wiser and older because he's over planning for these recoveries. And in all reality muddy shrunken lake beds are probably the hardest. "Better safe than sorry." 🙂
@dyent
@dyent Жыл бұрын
The problem with dried mud lakebeds is that often only the surface is dry. A couple of inches down and it could be clay, could be mud, could even just be water - there's no way to know without probing the ground.

@@dyent yes that is how it is in Northern Utah lake Powell and in some parts of lake Mead the surface looks dry but there is three or four feet of mud underneath. To my surprise this recovery was in the Great salt lake. We all know it's been receding a lot over the last 10 years but the mud still had water glistening on the top. Far less sneaky and waiting you to get your vehicle stuck in. Of course you go 100 yd in any direction and have a completely different situation. It's no wonder Matt went big on this recovery these dry lake beds are really hard to do.

I enjoy when other KZfaqrs help out such as Yankum Ropes showing up to provide an assist or any of the other cast of characters including trail mater, FabRats or Robby Layton. It makes what you guys at MORR do really fun.

The actual golden spike should be at that museum, there is one at the Sacramento Railroad museum tat never got used, as I recall there is a silver spike and other spike made of other metals. When the railroads were started they were different widths on the 2 side of the country, I do not know which side became the standard size but perhaps they used the west coast side since there were so many tracks that ran through mad made tunnels in the mountains made by the Chinese laborers or there might have been more track on the east coast since it was started there first... The locomotive that is the most famous in the world was in movies and TV shows such as the Wild Wild West, they had different smoke stack for the different shows and movies, it is in the museum at Jamestown, Ca. It went to the Sacramento Railroad museum to get a new boiler several years ago and was put back to work giving train rides!
