thanks for sharing, great documentary on one of my favourite and underrated ships in the age of sail. there is certain biases towards america which i appreciate is due to its origins. likelihood is that this design had been considered elsewhere but due to other nations already having a navy they couldn't use them. still, america perfecting such a design and breaking out into the already crowded seas is commendable and i have a lot of respect for them. love seeing the development of the 44s and 74s :)

Excellent work. Thank you for posting this historical piece. The British military was such and still is a very formidable force and it sure is comforting to know that we as Americans are allies with the great British people!!!

We all know in England that if a larger ship engages a smaller ship the engagement is unfair. A heavyweight getting into the ring with a middleweight. However, if the engagement as sought by the smaller British frigates, ended in defeat then it was just folly.

That is how they were, especially the R/N Frigate Captains, there was never any disdain for the USN by these Captains They loved the fight they knew how good the Constitution was but they still had to have a go. The R/N always was stupid that way. That is why they won at The Battle of the Nile and Trafalgar THEY LOVED THE FIGHT.

This seems less about frigates and more about trumpet blowing for America. The war of 1812 was not really about pressing sailors but more to do with US designs on Canada. No mention of the defeat of super frigates or that some Royal Navy frigates mentioned were only 28 gun vessels.

Do modern frigates do the same things that frigates did by rescuing sailors from sunken ships, stay out of battle, and tow damaged ships, etc?
@williamcarter1993
@williamcarter1993 10 ай бұрын
not really. now frigates are the modern fighting ship due to the advent of missiles and things. but they have the capability to rescue, etc as do larger ships

well when it said a documentary about frigates, I wasn't expecting a u.s navy propaganda film but there you go. yes very nice ships in the navy of the untied States but it was tiny. what about the royal navy use of frigates and their evolution. indeed the race to build better ships was an arms race of all nations from then all the way through to the advent of aircraft.

Mate you have let the cat among the Pigeons . They did not tell us that 3 of those little 38 gun British Frigates put paid to Two Super Frigates and the 44 gun Essex And that hero Decatur had surrendered his ship the USS President once to the HMS Endymion but then tried to escape and had to be chased down and surrender again .

The US lost The war of 1812 none of their wall goals were met. America's real game was to invade Canada and it failed. And the British burn down the White House lol

the USS Constitution was a 54 gun ship 2200 tons and 13 knots The fastest Frigate at sea was the HMS Endymion the ship that beat the USS President . And I would say Captains Edward Pellew and Lord Thomas Cochrane must be considered the Best Captains of the Age of Frigates Impressment: a good many of those sailors were deserters from the Royal Navy and it can be said the USN encouraged the desertions to acquire very experienced crews 1815 ha ha ha the USN were broke only the Constitution remained at sea. The USS President the Chesapeake and the Essex had been beaten by YES 38/40 gun R/N frigates and the Razees the 74 gun Vanguard class were NOT NEEDED And the US government ran yes ran to Belgium to sign the Treaty of Ghent Because Napoleon was beaten . And the Americans were afraid that the Royal Navy was now free to come over and destroy the new Republic And they were right to be, because Lord Cochrane wanted to take the Navy over but needed Wellingtons Army to do it. Wellington said no that his men had done enough and that England had been at war for 22 years and only wanted trade. So the USA owes Wellington a vote of thanks The fledgling USN did very well against the smaller Royal Navy frigates and made the R/N sit up and take notice so much so that they built the Razees, cut down a deck from the 64 gun ships of the line. Hats off to the USN but they never bothered the Royal Navy anywhere in the world again
